How To Qualify For The Army

What If I Have A Problem Getting Time Off From My Employer To Fulfill My Reserve Military Service Obligations

How to Apply – Joining the Army – Army Jobs

By law, as a member of the Reserve, you, upon request, must be granted a leave of absence to satisfy a requirement for military training. The Uniform Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act requires employers to provide Reservists with time away from their jobs to perform military duty. However, you must notify your employer that you intend to take military leave. You must be reemployed after completion of your military duty and return to your job within a reasonable time. You must be treated as though you had never left employment, including scheduled pay raises, promotions or credit for longevity or vacation. Your employer only has to hold a job open for 60 months if you accept voluntary orders.

Finding Your Army Job

To join the Army as an enlisted member, you usually must take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test and get a good score. The maximum ASVAB score is 99. For enlistment into the Army, you must get a minimum ASVAB score of 31.

Each Army job is given a code known as a Military Occupational Specialty . Every MOS has different ASVAB score requirements.

The ASVAB test actually consists of several different subject areas, or subtests. They are general science , arithmetic reasoning , word knowledge , paragraph comprehension , mathematics knowledge , electronics information , auto and shop information , mechanical comprehension and assembling objects .

Use the Army line scores information below in conjunction with the table that follows to determine the Army jobs you qualify for, based on your ASVAB scores.

Requirements For Joining The Military

The U.S. military has six branches of service: the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Space Force. The requirements to join are similar for all six. The main differences are in age limits, test scores, and fitness levels. Men and women meet different fitness standards. Besides the requirements listed here, a branch may have other requirements.

Age Limits for Enlisting

You must be at least 17 to enlist in any branch of the active military. The oldest you can be to enlist for active duty in each branch is:

  • Coast Guard: 31

  • Air Force: 39

  • Space Force: 39

Some branches have different age limits for their part-time Reserve and National Guard. Visit each service’s recruiting website for its part-time age limits.

Requirements for Enlisting If You Are Not a U.S. Citizen

You do not have to be a U.S. citizen to enlist in the military, but you may have fewer options. If you are not a U.S. citizen, you must:

  • Have a permanent resident card, also known as a Green Card

  • Currently live in the U.S.

  • Speak, read, and write English fluently

Educational and Testing Requirements for Enlisting

You must take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test. The ASVAB has 10 subtests.

  • Your scores on four of those make up your Armed Forces Qualification Test score. This score determines which branch you may join. Each branch has its own lowest score for joining.

  • Your scores on all 10 subtests determine which job specialties you qualify for.

The Difference Between The 75th Regiment And Ranger School

Those who are a part of the 75th Ranger Regiment are a part of a special operations unit.

The Regiments headquarters is the Special Operations Command in North Carolina.

This Regiment is the largest joint special operations force in the Army.

Height And Weight Standards

For most of the military, male applicants need to be between 60 inches and 80 inches tall. For female applicants, the range is between 58 inches and 80 inches. The Marines have separate standards: Male applicants should be between 58 and 78 inches tall, and female applicants between 58 and 72 inches tall.

The services have body fat standards, which are only partly based on weight. During an initial screening, applicants are measured on a body fat chart. Those who weigh more than the limits on the chart are measured to ensure they fall within the service’s body-fat standards. Often physically fit and muscular/low body fat recruits can be over the height/weight standards but meet the body fat requirements.

Soldiers enable America to fulfill its world leadership responsibilities of safeguarding our national interests, preventing global calamity and making the world a safer place. We do this by finding peaceful solutions to the frictions between nation states, addressing the problems of human suffering and, when required, fighting and winning our nation’s wars — our nonnegotiable contract with the American people.
