If youve reached the end of your service term in the military or you want to enlist again after being discharged, reenlisting is a similar process to when you first joined. While the rules and regulations may vary slightly between branches, each requires you to talk to a recruiter or Career Counselor to discuss your options. Once youve confirmed youre eligible for reenlistment and filled out the necessary forms, all you need to do is complete a ceremony for your service!

The Marines Operate As A Part Of The Department Of The Navy

The Marine Corps is the only branch that is independent but serves as part of another branch. Originally, the branch was founded as the Continental Marines in 1775, as a separate entity from the Navy. Then, in 1834, President Andrew Jackson expressed that he wanted the Marines to be part of the Army. However, the then-Marine Corps commandant, Archibald Henderson, had proven the branchs effectiveness on sea, in addition to land, and so he persuaded Congress to put the Marines in the Department of the Navy. The Navy and Marine Corps have been considered sister services ever since.

Common Reasons For Joining The Air Force

  • Youre treated more like a human than the Army and Marines
  • Even when youre deployed to some foreign hotspot, youll likely have better housing than any other branch.

What Is The Right Branch Of The Military For You

    July 25, 2009 By admin

What is the right branch of the military for you? If you are considering the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and National Guard, then you need to do some serious research. But first, you may want to consider the following.

1.If youve ever thought of trying to become a Navy Seal, then youll need to join the Navy or the Marines. Navy Seals are pulled exclusively from these two branches of the United States military. You can apply for Seal training when you join now, so you can go in with that intention.

Youll definitely want to look into the Air Force. Youll fly in any branch of the military, but the Air Force has more of an airborne focus than other branches.

3.Are you a water baby? Do you feel at home on the water, and love ships and sea travel? Join the Navy. You could be on an aircraft carrier, a destroyer or a nuclear submarine. Youll learn marine travel and seamanship best as a Navy recruit than any other branch of the military.

4.Would you like to be able to serve your country and get military benefits without doing so full time? Join the National Guard, where you can train part time with all the benefits and opportunities to serve.

Ultimately, youre responsible! Do your homework.

Army basic training is physically intense. If you are not physically active, youll want to start preparing yourself. Not So Cool Jobs In The Marines

Like most other branches, the Marines have their fair share of jobs that are considered the worst.

However, unlike the Navy, Army, or Air Force, theyre considered the worst for different reasons than you might think.

As I mentioned earlier, most guys join the Marines for one key reason: to see combat.

If you end up doing the following jobs, theres a good chance you will be nowhere near the fight:

How Long Do I Have To Serve If I Join

Most first-term enlistments are four years of Active Duty, followed by four years in the Individual Ready Reserve . In the IRR, you don’t train, and you live at home maintaining a regular job, but you may be called to duty, if necessary, until your term expires. Some service branches also have an annual muster requirement to check in on basic health and fitness. Service commitment really depends upon the Service and the career to which you’re applying. A local recruiter has all the details you’ll need about terms of service.

    Who Should Join The Army

As the oldest branch of the military, the Army is one of the most popular branches to join. That doesnt mean its easy, however. Basic training in the Army is incredibly tough, second only to that of the Marines. During Basic Combat Training, you undergo a grueling 10 weeks of training. During that time, your physical fitness is put to the test. Youll also learn basic marksmanship, tactical foot marches, field training exercises, and Army values. Youll have to suffer through gas chamber training, too- and its not fun.

Youll also have to pick a MOS, or Military Occupation Code. There are tons to choose from, but you probably wont qualify for them all. Your score on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, or ASVAB, will determine what your options are. Still, there are so many to choose from that youre bound to find something that interests you.

Whos The Best: Army Or Navy

Personally, I believe it all depends on the person and what they want to do in the military.

I have been fortunate to serve and deploy with both branches. I first served in the Navy for 5 years, and Ive now been in the Army for 12 years. I have learned many different things in both, and both have taught me many lifetime values to live by. I can say with confidence that they are both good branches to serve in and be a part of.

However, the main thing I have learned is that no matter what branch you serve in, we are all part of the same team. Were all part of the United States Armed Forces, and were all working to protect freedom.

With this in mind, my experience serving in both the Army and the Navy has also taught me that, although they are obviously very different from each other, they also share a lot of similarities.

While many Air Force jobs are actually considered exciting, there are several jobs that arent exactly considered the most fun or interesting.

During The Draft In America How Did They Choose Who Went To Which Branch And Did What Job

The draft was never popular, but during WWII it was deemed necessary. When the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940 was signed by President Roosevelt, men aged 21 to 35 were registered.

This initial draft worked via a random lottery, but what happened to the draftees? How did the US government determine which branch they served in and the jobs that they were assigned?

To better understand how this process worked, the draft system as a whole needs to be looked at. The start of this process was a man of the correct age being registered by one of the 6,443 boards across the country. Every county had at least one board or a board for every 30,000 people.

The DSS Form 1 had a random serial number which counted the total number of registered people in the area. These forms were used in the draft lottery which was first held on October 29, 1940. The men whose numbers were drawn were notified via the draft notice and would then be inducted into the army.

During the registration process, a Qualification Card would be filled out. These cards would help the government with classification. Classifications would be routinely reviewed, and men often shifted between the different classes based on their physical condition as well as their occupation.

Men who fell into certain classifications would not be inducted when the draft first started, but this did change over time.

    Things They Asked Themselves:

Military Branch Picker: What Military Branch Should I ...
    • What attracted me to the Army in the first place?
    • Am I willing to do the tasks my soldiers have to do within this branch?
    • Do I understand and believe in the mission of this branch?
    • Will this branch challenge me / fulfill me / make me better?
    • Does this branch offer personal and professional options I want? Does it align with my personality and goals? Does it let me serve at my greatest capacity?
    • What factors affect my success in this branch? Schools, Post, leadership?
    • Do I have any mentors in this branch?
    • How best may I serve?

    Enlisted Members Versus Commissioned Officers

    US Military Poster

In addition to deciding on a military service, if you have a four-year college bachelors degree , you should decide whether you want to join that service as a commissioned officer, or whether you wish to join as an enlisted member. Commissioned officers make a lot more money than enlisted members. Additionally, their “quality of life” is generally better . However, they have a much greater degree of responsibility.

The competition for commissioned slots is tough, and merely having a college degree is not enough. Factors such as college grade point average and officer accession test scores are given much weight. It’s also much harder to get approved for waivers for commissioned applicants than it is for enlisted applicants.

If you decide you wish to apply for a commission, ask the recruiter to refer you to an “Officer Accessions Recruiter.”
