How to Mentally Prepare for ARMY Basic Training

With some practice, mental resilience is a skill you can pick up at any time. Preparing yourself well in advance mentally is just as important as physically prepping. During challenging physical times like working out humans give up mentally long before they give up physically.

When you have a goal is sight like graduating from basic training keep that as motivation to continue on. Then, think beyond that. See it done. Imagine how youll feel. Create that motivational image in your mind as it gets closer to the date youll be leaving for boot camp.

The sooner you can start mentally preparing, the better. The mind is a lot like a muscle that needs to be built up. The more work you put into it, the stronger it will be.

See how you can start preparing for basic training now:

How To Physically Prepare For Military Training

When joining the military, the first stop is often basic training. A rigorous physical and mental training program, the military requires recruits to perform strenuous exercise, information training and field preparation. Before showing up to the first day of basic training, prepare yourself physically. The training program is not impossible, but it helps to get yourself in good shape and used to some of the regimens you will encounter during those brutal two months.

Preparing For Basic Training With Diet

Food Training: Eat Right to Prepare for U.S. Army Basic Training

The best way to prepare for anything is to begin as soon as possible if your readiness levels arent where they should be. US Army Basic Training tests an individuals strength, speed and endurance and pushes those abilities to the limit. Follow this diet plan along with your workout routine to improve your effectiveness as a soldier-in-training in the months and weeks before you ship out.

In Basic Training, long stretches of running are the norm. Dont underemphasize carbohydrates where the body gets glycogen as an energy source. Low-carb diets dont agree with long intervals of training. Follow a diet high in protein with moderate carbs. Dont mind calories, either. Remember that a calorie is defined as a unit of energy and those get burned in basic training preparation.

Energy and strength for training comes from a combination of natural carbs, lean protein and healthy fats. Follow a 40-30-30 percentage plan for each, respectively. Dont skimp on carbs, but do skip processed foods like pasta, pizza and white bread. Anything made with white flour promotes burnout. Eat fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Potatoes, oats and rice are great foods that also fill you up.

Commitment to the US Army requires much physical and mental preparation. Before you get there, youll work out, and work out some more. Until then, the right diet plan is half the journey.

The Basic Training Workbook

I bought this book directly from the author after reading his Guidebook to help me prepare for boot camp. It was definitely worth it. Theres lots of real helpful info in both books, and the Workbook had a lot of extra content, like the multiple choice questions and things on the authors website. . There is a small problem with some of the flashcards in the book. The words dont match up correctly on the front and back when cut out. An obvious printing error, and not the authors fault. I was not going to cut out the phonetic alphabet cards anyway, so I just used index cards and made my own. If you want to use the cards in the book, I guess you could just write the answer on them. No big deal and it does not detract from all the great info inside this book. Mandatory reading, no exception.

How To Frame Basic Training In Your Mind

4 Military Training Techniques Guaranteed to Give Results

When I was attending recruit training on Parris Island, the one obstacle I had the most trouble with was the feeling that boot camp would never end. From my perspective doing pushups on the quarter deck in week 2, leaving the island in week 13 seemed so far away that it might as well have been make believe. When youre measuring time in side straddle hops rather than hours or minutes, three months can start to seem like an eternity.

When you feel those feelings creep up into you head, remind yourself of other things youve done for two or three months, and how quickly that time past by. When you were a kid, summer vacation seemed to flash before your eyes, and that was just about as long as your tenure at basic. Stop focusing on how much youve got left ahead, and focus instead on what youre doing right now. Focus on overcoming the immediate obstacles youre facing and worry less about how many weeks youve got left. Before you know it, theyll have passed you by while you were busy training.

What To Wear To Basic Training Graduation

At this ceremony, your soldier will likely be in their dress blue uniform the Army equivalent to a suit and tie. As a guest, you dont need to wear a formal outfit, but youll want to look nice to show appreciation for your soldiers accomplishment. Business casual or your Sunday best clothes are more than appropriate.

Remember, graduations are usually held outdoors in some of the hotter months of the year. Take all these considerations into account when deciding your layering, your footwear and, yes, also your hydration.

Bring your pride in your soldiers achievement, a camera to capture the moments, binoculars, sunscreen and a little cash for any commemorative items you may want. Definitely leave the alcohol, tobacco, weapons, silly string or other offensive items outside the gate. Its all about respecting how the process forged a fighter from your son, daughter, brother, sister whatever they are to you. At the same time, you can enjoy the pomp and circumstance of the ceremony, such as the national anthem, remarks from leadership, etc. and telling your soldier WELL DONE afterward.

The Army purposely makes OCS more difficult compared to basic training.

It prepares high-ranking officers, those that will make difficult decisions out in the field later on down the road.

Don’t Forget To Stretch

Stretch your legs aggressively, specifically the hamstring, for holds of 25 to 30 counts every day. Flexibility is vitally important to fitness and preparation to help avoid injury in your Army workout. Stretching is tested in basic training as well, and men usually struggle with flexible hamstrings. So use your training blocks to incorporate challenging stretching routines for 10 to 15 minutes each day.

If you have previous injuries, speak with your health care professional about her recommendations for you moving forward with an Army workout.

The Importance Of Strength

You may think strength is unnecessary to complete the endurance challenges of Basic Training, such as max Pull-Ups, Push-Ups, timed runs and other bodyweight movements. You would be wrong.

Consider this example:

My Trap Bar Deadlift one-rep max is 425 poundsalbeit with a little grinding. I can perform 28 reps of 225 pounds in one minute, which equates to approximately one rep every two seconds. If my one-rep max were only 275 pounds, do you think I could perform 28 reps of 225 pounds? Not likely.

If you can Bench Press a maximum of 225 pounds and you weigh 200 pounds, it will be significantly more difficult to perform a Push-Up than if you could bench 315 pounds. Increasing your strength wont directly increase your endurance, but each rep will be easier for you to complete.

To see this concept in action, watch the two videos below. The first shows a five-rep max, Loaded Push-Up test. The second shows a one-minute Push-Up test.

This concept applies to every exercise and drill in Basic Training. The stronger you are, the more successful you will be in any particular movement.

Increasing your strength also reduces your risk of injury. A non-trained individual is more susceptible to stress fractures during basic training. Strength exercises place a load on your bones and stimulate bone density, helping your bones withstand high-stress activity.

How Long Is Army Ocs

The U.S. Army Officer Candidate School lasts 12 weeks.

The training academy is based out of Fort Benning in Georgia.

Army OCS trains, assesses, and evaluates prospective commissioned officers for not only the U.S. Army, but also the Army National Guard and Reserve.

Officer Candidate School adheres to the motto Standards, No Compromise.

Its worth mentioning that the U.S. Army is the only uniformed branch where individuals must enlist before they attend Officer Candidate School.

Consequently, recruits need to attend Basic Combat Training prior to Officer Candidate School, unlike other officer training programs of the Marine Corps and Navy.

The Army accepts enlisted members , warrant officers, inter-service transfers, and civilian college graduates for the OCS Option after completing boot camp.

How To Prepare Your Mind And Body For Basic Training

If you wait until the first day of basic training to start preparing you will fight an uphill battle. Going in physically and mentally strong will provide you with the confidence you need.

Going in physically and mentally strong to basic training will provide you with the confidence you need to complete the training with no problems. I mentioned in my previous article that no matter which branch of the military you go into, it will be a physically and emotionally draining experience. If you wait until the first day of basic training to start preparing you will fight an uphill battle.

While the requirements and training for each branch of the military are different, your biggest hurdles are going to be the same three things. The three hurdles are previous injuries, lack of preparation, and the little voice inside your head.

Your goal in preparing beforehand is to go into basic training confident, fresh, and in your best shape possible. You should not over do it by simulating the demands youll go through during the eight-plus weeks, but your focus should be to get your body and mind acclimated to basic training. Remember, at basic training you will no doubt experience weakness, fatigue, irritability, disturbed sleep, depression, a weakened immune system, and loss of appetite all of which can all lead to your chance of injury.
