How to know if joining the army is right for you

If successful, you will:

Congratulations!

If you’ve reached this part of the application process you’ll soon receive your official ADF job offer along with your joining instructions.

Your Enlistment Coordinator will organise your Enlistment / Appointment Day. The ceremony is a very proud moment as you become an official member of the Australian Defence Force, so we encourage you to invite friends and family along to watch you undertake the official oath or affirmation, to find out more about what lies ahead for you, and to say a proper goodbye.

Before the day you must ensure that:

  • Results from any requested blood tests have been received by Defence Force Recruiting
  • If relevant to your position and included with your Letter of Offer, the Security Pack has been completed and returned

Has anything changed?

It’s very important to notify us if, since your interviews and fitness test:

  • There have been any additions or changes to prescribed medication, or
  • You have been involved in an incident with the police, or
  • You have an outstanding court action, or

A second Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check will be performed before the day of your enlistment or appointment.

What to expect

If You Want Control Over Where Youre Going To Live

Before I joined there was a rumor that I get to write down my top three preferred duty stations.

Unfortunately, thats just patently wrong.

The military places its members where it needs them, hence the term service.

It takes years of serving and moving up in rank until you get any say in where you can live.

What Are The Consequences If I Do Not Go To Meps On My Ship Date

You will get out of the military. As described above it may take some time before it is finalized, but eventually everyonewho has not reported has been released. We have never seen withdrawing from the DEP have any effect on things like employment, bank loans, school eligibility, or your legal record. This is the case for non-citizens as well as citizens. In fact the military will normally let someone who has gotten out of the DEP enlist again. Some employment applications ask about military service.Generally people do not list DEP time on employment application reasoning that they were never in an active pay status.

What Is The Delayed Entry Program And Can I Get Out Of It

Information current as of March 2018

NOTE: If your US citizenship is conditional upon serving in the US military, your status could be affected by ANY separation or discharge from the military. We encourage service members in this situation to contact an immigration attorney for assistance and advice. You can request free legal counsel from the American Immigration Lawyers Association Military Assistance Program.

Most people who enlist join through the Delayed Entry Program sometimes called the Future Soldiers Program. This allows someone to sign up for the military prior to the date when they will ship out for initial training. People in the DEP are unpaid and are not subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice, UCMJ.

After Joining the DEP, Some People change their Minds. During the delay before leaving for basic training some people feel they were pressured into something they werent sure about. Others have life changesperhaps they decide to go to college, get married, or they get their dream job. They no longer wish to be locked into years of military service. Because the DEP is the easiest phase to get out of the military, it a critical time for anyone having second thoughts to give serious consideration to whether they truly belong in the military.

  • Are you thinking of making the military a career, or just join for four to five years prior to going to college?
  • Do you want to learn a trade, or get college benefits?
  • Are you interested in traveling the world?

Freedom Of Information Act Request

One of the most accurate ways to check proof of military service is via a FOIA request.

Public military records are available to citizens just like other pieces of government documentation.

Our founding fathers established public records to offer full transparency between U.S. citizens and the U.S. government, which is why matters of public health and safety are made readily available.

Most public records request require no personal information or explanation on your part.

If youre an American citizen that would like to search a military public records database, you have that right.

Public records availability is still supported through pieces of legislation such as the Freedom of Information Act. Since 1967, the Freedom of Information Act has provided the public with the opportunity to request access to records for any federal agency, including the U.S. Military.

Gi Bill And Tuition Assistance

In the past year, more students became eligible for VAs Yellow Ribbon program and new tuition assistance caps were put in place for some service members.

Post-9/11 GI Bill

The Post-9/11 GI Bill is a benefit for the latest generation of service members and veterans, as well as their eligible dependents. It includes payment of tuition and fees, a monthly housing allowance, and a stipend for textbooks and supplies.

The amount of time you spend on active duty determines your benefit level. In general, the higher your benefit level, the less you have to pay out of pocket for school, maxing out at the 100% benefit level, which covers full in-state tuition at public universities.

Heres what veterans who received an honorable discharge after Sept. 10, 2011, are eligible for based on the amount of time theyve served:

  • 100%: 36 months or more of active duty service, or at least 30 continuous days and discharged due to service-connected disability.
  • 90%: At least 30 months, less than 36 months.
  • 80%: At least 24 months, less than 30 months.
  • 70%: At least 18 months, less than 24 months.
  • 60%: At least 6 months, less than 18 months.
  • 50%: At least 90 days, less than 6 months.
  • No benefit: Less than 90 days.

If your service ended before Jan. 1, 2013, your Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits will expire 15 years after your last separation date from active service. If your service ended after that date, your benefit does not expire.

What does the Post-9/11 GI Bill cover?

What are the limits?

Hosting Guests Where You Live On Base

If youve been itching to host guests in your on-base housing, you might have asked yourself, Can civilians get on military bases? Yes, they can!

Though we all know military members throw the best parties, you might want to invite non-military members to visit you from time to time. If thats the case, there is usually a strict set of protocols that youll both need to follow to get military base access for civilians.

1. Fill out a sponsorship form for them and request a base access pass.

  • This may include you gathering information from them such as their date of birth, drivers license number, birth city, and social security number.
  • You need to fill out a sponsorship form and request a pass for each individual person you want to invite on base.

2. Wait for approval.

  • Dont assume you will get approval just because you requested a pass. If they try to get on base without authorization, they could be barred.

3. Share the base access pass with them.

  • Each person should have their own pass.

4. Meet your guests at the gate.

Which Service Should I Join

Next, you’ll need to decide which service you are interested in. Sometimes, you’ll know this in advance. Perhaps you had a friend or relative who served or is serving in a particular branch of the military and you want to follow in their footsteps. You should give this matter much study and thought.

Each of the services is different, and some people may be more suited for one service vs. another. Make sure you select a service that you are interested in joining, based upon your interests. Don’t join a service just because someone else liked it, or expects you to. It’s your life and your decision.

There are also differences in education benefits, assignments, job guarantees, education programs, and enlistment/re-enlistment bonuses.

Recruiters see lots of folks who want to enlist and serve in one of these elite fields. The truth of the matter is that most people who apply for the “elite” programs wash out due to the very rigorous training requirements. If you enlist to become one of these “elites,” and you wash out of training, you don’t get to quit. You’ll be required to serve the remainder of your enlistment contract in a different job.

How To Read Military Time

When keeping hours in this fashion, the day starts at midnight and is written as 00:00. The last minute of the day is written as 23:59, or one minute before the next midnight. Sometimes you may see 00:00 written as 24:00. Both are acceptable. A usage example showing the 12 hour clock vs military time would be a time table showing 4:00 pm to 12:00 midnight. This would be written as 16:00 24:00. Another example highlighting the difference between the two would be to show that 10:15 am is written as 10:15 in military time but 2:30 pm is written as 14:30.

This method of keeping time is most commonly used by the military, government, public transportation, hospitals, meteorologists, astronomers, those employed in emergency services, and also with computers. When speaking in military time, 07:00 may be stated as zero seven hundred or oh seven hundred. Also, in the military, these time stamps are often written without the colon, so 07:52 would rather be written 0752.

Time stamps referencing Greenwich Mean Time is denoted by a Z at the end, and is written as 0752Z. The local time is denoted by a J at the end, and the eastern time zone is denoted by an R at the end. Each of the zones have a corresponding letter and name.

Free Ways To Check If Someone Was In The Military / Verify Service

We live in a world where trust is not easily granted. Weve all heard stories about scam artists, phonies, and those that pretend to be something they are not.

Unfortunately, this is also very common in the world of the U.S. Military. There are sorry individuals that exaggerate what they did while in service, or lie altogether about being a soldier or veteran.

For this reason, its sometimes necessary to verify if someone actually served or is serving in the US military.

Reasons include employment verification, checking the background of a relative or boyfriend / girlfriend.

Unfortunately, there arent any public military database records that one can easily search online.

Weve gotten a lot of questions about this. Questions like:

How do you do a military lookup by name? Is there a free military background check available online?

Fortunately, you have some options.

Below are 6 ways to verify someones military service.

The National Guard And Reserves

All of the services have a reserve component, while the Army and Air Force have a related National Guard as well. The primary purpose of the Reserves and National Guard is to provide a reserve force to supplement the active duty forces when needed.

The biggest difference between the Reserves and National Guard is that the Reserves belong to the federal government, while the National Guard belongs to the individual state government. While both the Reserves and the National Guard can be called to active duty by the Federal Government, under the authority of the President, individual state governors can also call out their National Guard units to assist in individual state emergencies.

Following basic training and job training, members of the Reserves and National Guard drill one weekend each month and two weeks every year. However, it’s become more and common to activate Guard and Reserve units to supplement active duty deployments to such locations as Iraq, Kuwait, Bosnia, Afghanistan, and Kosovo.

Why Is Deers So Important

Why you should NOT join the military!

In order to receive any military benefits, you must be enrolled in DEERS. Suppose youve ever been denied access to a military installation or have been unable to shop at the commissary or exchange on a military installation. In that case, an error in DEERS may have been the culprit.

The DEERS system is most commonly utilized and recognized for its essential role in ID cards, but the data also establishes eligibility for things like:

  • On-base housing
  • Medical benefits including FEDVIP programs for dental and vision
  • Dental benefits
  • Life Insurance

Due to the databases role in so many benefits, you and your spouse must keep DEERS updated with the most accurate information otherwise, you could be denied entitlements or benefits.

When Is It Too Late

Part of the enlistment process includes going to the MEPS for a physical and swearing in to the DEP and filling out part of the contract . People who have taken these steps can still get out of the DEP using methods described above.

Eventually a persons time in the DEP ends and the transition to active duty for training begins. On the date when a person is scheduled to report for basic training, they will normally be instructed to return to the MEPS and swear in a second time while they sign the last sheet of the military enlistment contract which states that the person wishes to be discharged from the Delayed Entry/Enlistment Program and enlisted in the Regular Component.

Up until that final point of the second swear in and signing of the last page of the contract, people have been able to get out of the DEP by simply refusing to go. Once a person has sworn in the second time as part of shipping out they may still be able to get out of the military, but it will involve much more time and energy. People who believe they are in this status can contact a GI Rights Counselor at 877 447 4487 to determine what options they have.
