Six Steps To Us Naturalization And Citizenship Through Military Service

As of 2017, Department of Defense policy changes to how foreign-born service members may apply for U.S. citizenship while serving may impact the time it takes for you to apply for citizenship.

Here is a step-by-step guide for how the naturalization process typically works for foreign-born service members. Many military installations have a designated U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services liaison to help you with the Form N-400 application process. Make sure you ask your commanding officer and local installation for the latest information on naturalization policies for active-duty service members.

  • Make sure youre eligible for citizenship. Use the Naturalization Eligibility Worksheet, Form M-480.
  • Have your chain of command complete and certify Form N-426, Request for Certification of Military or Naval Service, Form N-426 after you have completed your portion of the form. Your chain of command, who must be an 0-6 or above, may certify this form, making a characterization of service determination after you honorably serve at least 180 days of active duty during periods of hostility which we have been in since Sept. 11, 2001 or one full year during peacetime. This time includes basic training.
  • Attend an oath naturalization ceremony to take the Oath of Allegiance and officially become a U.S. citizen, if USCIS approves your Form N-400. This could occur on the same day as your interview or be scheduled for a future date.
  • Will Age Affect How You Are Treated In The Military

Age does not entail getting better or worse treatment in the military. Although there may be a few jokes and roasts here and there , there may also be more people looking up to you and some expectations given the perception that you have slightly more life experience. However, you will be held to the same standard as everyone else.

The designated periods of hostilities are listed below:

To establish eligibility under INA 329, you must:

      • Have served honorably in the U.S. armed forces during a designated period of hostility, and if separated, have been separated under honorable conditions from your qualifying period of service

The U.S. Army is one of six branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. It is a strategic instrument of national policy that has served our country well in peace and war for more than two centuries. Soldiers enable America to fulfill its world leadership responsibilities of safeguarding our national interests, preventing global calamity and making the world a safer place. We do this by finding peaceful solutions to the frictions between nation states, addressing the problems of human suffering and, when required, fighting and winning our nation’s wars — our nonnegotiable contract with the American people.

Rape and sexual harassment occur frequently in the armed forces. One report stated that 64 percent of women in the military have experienced sexual harassment. Often men use rank to try to get sexual favors. Women who refused to comply have been labeled lesbians.

The enlisted and officer careers have a significant impact on the training and experience of a new recruit. If you are enlisted, you are required to have a high school diploma, while an officer position requires a four-year degree or equivalent.

Most enlisted land on careers that need individual skills and are more involved in hands-on training for transportation, mechanical, office fields, and human services. On the contrary, the officer lands on careers that have to do with leadership, planning, directing, and critical decision making.

Us Laments As Qualified American Youths Reluctant To Join Army

The United States has bemoaned that fewer young Americans are qualified to serve, and even fewer are willing to be recruited into the countrys military.

According to the Defense Departments top personnel and readiness leader, the reluctance is blamed on the American competitive job market.

Quoting a Pentagon data, it was revealed that only 9% of the youth show tendency to join the army.

ABC News disclosed these on Saturday as it quoted top military sources who testified on Capitol Hill in late April.

The Department is in fierce competition for skilled, relevant and innovative talent. The labor market, exacerbated by the effects of the pandemic and the military-civilian divide creates a challenging recruiting environment, Gilbert Cisneros told senators at an Armed Services subcommittee hearing.

Many of the things that we used to offer, like the GI Bill, are offered by private industry today. So theyre no longer a benefit, the former senior official said.

It was learnt that even the Marine Corps, which does not usually struggle to find recruits, is under pressure to meet its goals.

In the report, it was revealed that top reasons cited for not wanting to join are the possibility of injury or death, and fear of developing PTSD or other psychological problems.

But the pool of young people who meet the basic standards to enlist in the military is also deteriorating.
