How To Repay Your Loans After Medical School

Medical School Debt vs Military Scholarship: Pros and Cons

You have a few options when it comes to repaying federal loans, such as income-driven repayment plans that reduce your monthly payment amount.

Federal loans also provide you with these options:

  • Student loan forbearance, to temporarily stop making payments.
  • Debt consolidation, to lower interest rates and simplify payments.
  • Loan forgiveness or loan cancellation.

How does the loan forgiveness work? There are a few programs, such as the Public Service Loan Forgiveness , that forgive the remaining balance of Direct Loans after the borrower makes 120 on-time, qualifying monthly payments while working in a qualifying public service position, such as a U.S. federal, state, local, or tribal government or not-for-profit organization. The National Health Service Corps and the Indian Health Service programs also offer med students loan forgiveness if they serve in a marginalized and under-resourced community.

Other ideas to repay your loans are:

  • Work a part-time job as a teaching or research assistant while in medical school.
  • Learn how to budget your expenses, commit to saving money during your four years at med school, and designate some of your income for interest payments.
  • Live frugally.

How To Get Army Scholarships For Medical School

According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, the average medical school tuition in 2010-11 was around $29,000 at a public medical school, and $47,000 at a private one. This fee doesn’t include books or lab or living fees, which can add an additional $20,000 to one’s annual costs.

To put it plain and simple, the cost of medical school can be daunting, despite a guaranteed starting salary of $119,000 for a general practice physician .

It’s not surprising then, that many students seek out ways to buffer this burden. The most common options are student loans and academic scholarships. One of the most generous scholarships available is the F. Edward Hebert Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program , which is the official name for an Army medical scholarship .

On the following pages, we’ll discuss the pros, the cons and the obligations of earning an Army scholarship.

Paying For Medical School In The Us Military

The first thing to keep in mind when considering military options to pay for medical school and medical training is that in exchange for paying for your training, your branch of military service will require a time commitment from youyou must agree to serve a minimum time in uniform as a trained medical professional.

In general, your military commitment will depend greatly on the amount of commitment the military gives youevery year you receive military educational assistance toward a medical degree you are required to commit the same amount of time to serving. If you enter a four-year medical program and get four years of full-time coverage for it, you will be expected to commit to four years of service in uniform.

It should be pointed out that many such programs require your military commitment to begin after residency requirements are met and not before. Resident work may coincide with or conflict with Guard or Reserve commitments. You will need to ask questions of your school and recruiter to learn how to reconcile such schedules where needed.

Why Dr Shaw Chose A Civilian Residency

When he was finishing his military service, Dr. Shaw participated in both the military and AOA matches, landing family medicine residency positions in both. Dr. Shaw ultimately chose a civilian residency through the AOA in part because it was less of a time commitment.

The military considers its residency training to be free education that must be paid back with more active duty service. Because Dr. Shaw had already completed his required service for med school, he would have owed the military additional years of service after finishing a military residency.

Everyone Affected By The Covid

Announcing “a new plan to require more Americans to be vaccinated to combat those blocking public health,” Biden on Sept. 9 rolled out his administration’s Path Out of the Pandemic program, which aims to increase the vaccination rate by requiring shots across public and private sectors. Roughly 80 million Americans who are eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine have not been vaccinated. And as of July, 99% of COVID deaths were among the unvaccinated, who also made up 97% of hospitalizations.

Here’s who’s required to be vaccinated under the plan:

  • Employers with 100 or more employees will be required to have their employees either be fully vaccinated or get tested weekly to come to work. Biden said the Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration would implement the requirements that will affect 84 million workers.
  • Federal workers and employees of contractors that do business with the federal government will be required to be vaccinated.
  • The Department of Health and Human Services will require vaccinations in Head Start Programs, as well as schools run by the Department of Defense and the Bureau of Indian Education.
  • Workers in health care facilities that receive Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements, including hospitals and home health agencies, will also have to be fully vaccinated.
  • Individuals applying to become lawful permanent US residents must be fully vaccinated, US Citizenship and Immigration Services announced on Sept. 14.

As a medical student on a military scholarship, I get a lot of questions about the benefits, the downsides, and how to go about getting your very own military scholarship. As part of a series of posts about the military Health Professions Scholarship Program , today we will be talking about the basics: what it is, what it pays for, and when it may be a good deal for you. Keep an eye out for future posts, where we will discuss alternatives to HPSP, how to apply for HPSP, the military match, and other aspects of military medical education. So, without further ado

What it isThe military Health Professions Scholarship Program, or HPSP, is a program that provides a pathway for students to complete their medical training and then serve in the military as physicians. Each of the major branches of service has its own HPSP: the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The Marine Corps doesnt have its own medical personnel, they use Navy medical personnel, so there is no Marine Corps HPSP.

The general rules are the same for all three branches, with some nuances. These will be covered in another post in this series. I am coming from an Air Force perspective, so bear in mind that while I have classmates who are in the Army and Navy and I have asked them about the finer points of their programs, I am the most knowledgeable about my own branch.

In the meantime, what questions do you have?

Aside from scholarships and student loans, another resource for funding your education is tapping into your personal network. Some medical students are fortunate enough to lean on generous well-to do parents, relatives, or other benefactors. You may be surprised to learn as you go through medical school how often this option is used, Dr. Beddingfield shares. If youre one of the lucky ones who can take advantage of this option, the benefits for you are clear. But there may be rewards for your sponsors as well, such as various tax benefits. Financial support doesnt have to come in the form of a gift either some choose to loan the tuition money with the expectation that it gets paid back once the student is a practicing physician. Lastly, personal savings cant be overlooked. Tightening up your own expenses and sticking to a modest budget while in medical school will put you in a better position to begin paying back any loans later. Some of this lifestyle change will be inevitably come with life as a medical student, according to Dr. Doggett. One advantage to being so busy is that there is little time to spend money, she says. Vaccine Requirements For Those In The Us Military And Police

Texas A& M medical students get hands

In August, the Pentagon said that all 1.3 million active-duty service members will need to receive COVID-19 vaccinations. The directive covers all active-duty members of the Armed Forces or in the Ready Reserve, including the National Guard. The Department of Defense will make Pfizer shots accessible on military installations around the world. Service members who received the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccines will still be considered fully vaccinated. There are some exemptions, including one for religious reasons, but they aren’t granted frequently.

In response to several cities requiring law enforcement officers to get vaccinated, police associations have come out openly against vaccine mandates. In Oregon, for example, police and firefighter associations are suing to block a state-level vaccine requirement.

Right now, members of the military are already required to get at least nine other vaccines — up to 17 total vaccines — depending on where they’re deployed.

What Is The Gi Bill

In case you didnât know, the GI Bill is an education benefit given by the Department of Veterans Affairs to people who belong to the Selected Reserve, National Guard Armed Forces and members of Active Duty. It started in 1944 with the GI Bill of Rights.

This benefit extends to the families of the members and aims to help service members to cover the costs involved in getting an education and training. If youâre entitled to this benefit, attending medical school can come off easier â and cheaper.

Being qualified for the GI Bill can provide several benefits to your life. These benefits can be a godsend, especially if youâre planning to attend a medical school soon. Let this article paint a clearer picture of how you can use the GI Bill for medical school.

And What Did You Do After You Left Active Duty

Since my degree is in history and you need a spate of requirements to apply to medical school, I started taking undergrad classes and doing other activities to build my application. I applied to about 10 schools and ultimately ended up choosing Ohio State to do my prereqs.

There are a number of ways to go about doing a post-baccalaureate. There are formal programs like Bryn Mawr, Scripps, Tufts, and others where they have everything scheduled for you- from classes to research to volunteering. Theyre a bit pricey, but being used to routine in the military, this might be a good path if you know that you thrive off of that. You can also just enroll somewhere and organize that schedule yourself. Its a lot cheaper and you have more say in how long it takes to complete. The formal post-bacc programs tend to be 1.5-2 years. The DIY route is as long as you want it to be.

I chose the DIY route for a handful of reasons. If you do the DIY post-bacc option, make sure you pick a school thats fairly reputable . Lastly, some formal post-bacc options have whats called linkage programs which means you can skip having to take a gap year for interviews if you choose to. Im skeptical of them because I dont think the participating schools lend that much more weight to your application and it certainly wont outweigh a bad application, but its worth figuring out for yourself if its for you.
