What Does The Ged Involve
The GED refers to the General Education Development Test. Earning a GED provides an alternative to earning the traditional high school diploma. The GED exam includes four separate tests that you may schedule on the same day or on different days. Each test typically requires at least an hour, and each test focuses on one of the main testing subject areas, which are:
- Reasoning through language arts
- Mathematical reasoning
GED tests include multiple choice, long-form and essay questions. People pursuing a GED often hire tutors, enroll in preparatory courses and/or complete practice exams for the tests. To earn your GED, you must earn at least a score of 145 out of 200 on all four of your individual tests. Scores within the 165 to 174 range or 175 to 200 range show a preparedness for college courses or may entitle you to college credit hours.
GED requirements vary by state. Most states require you to be at least 18 years old to take the exam. However, some states make exceptions, such as offering the exam to 16- and 17-year-olds who have permission from their parent or legal guardian.

What Is The Tier Classification System
The Department of Defense uses a three-tiered system to classify potential recruits. The criteria for each tier relates to educational requirements. The tiers are:
- Tier 1: Recruits with at least a high school diploma
- Tier 2: Recruits with a GED
- Tier 3: Recruits without a high school diploma or GED
Tier 2 recruits may move to Tier 1. To do so, they must earn at least 15 hours of college credit. However, some military recruiters recommend attempting to enlist as a Tier 2 recruit or complete the ASVAB test before enrolling in college courses to move to Tier 1.
The Department of Defense uses this system to prioritize recruiting applicants with higher credentials and whom they deem more likely to satisfy their initial military obligation. Based on this, the Department of Defense requires at least 90% of all recruits overall to be from Tier 1. Each branch of the military has their own requirements for the percentage of Tier 2 recruits they enlist each year. Most branches do not admit Tier 3 recruits unless under certain circumstances or they make special exceptions.

Army Recruiting High School Dropouts Without Ged
James Joyner·Wednesday, September 21, 2005·
The Army is now allowing its recruiters to sign up high school dropouts who do not have a GED for the first time in years.
Army recruiters now have a wider pool to find future soldiers in. The Army is reaching out to a slice of Americaâs youth long ineligible to serve: non-high school graduates who donât have a General Equivalency Diploma.
When I saw the headline and read that introduction, my heart sank. Thankfully, I kept reading:
Recruiters can now go after that demographic through the âArmy Educations Plusâ option, the Army announced Tuesday. If an individual has been out of high school for at least six months, can pass a physical exam and the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, he or she may be eligible for help getting a GED.
The program allows recruiters to enlist a high school dropout, according to S. Douglas Smith, a spokesman for the U.S. Army Recruiting Command. But the enlistee must have the GED before shipping off to basic training. The Army will pay for individuals to attend a course to prepare for the GED test and will cover the cost of taking the GED exam. Before attending the GED course on the Armyâs tab, the person must enlist into the Armyâs delayed entry program, Smith said.
The regular Army, Army Reserve and Army National Guard are each offering this option, as of Tuesday.
How To Get In The Military Without The Asvab
The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, or ASVAB, is an aptitude test used to inventory the skills of Americans interested in joining the military. According to Military.com, ASVAB testing is administered by more than 14,000 schools and Military Entrance Processing Stations nationwide. The tests are designed and managed by the Department of Defense. The ASVAB is not a pass or fail test. Rather, it gauges a candidates abilities.
Take the ASVAB test. There is no way to join the military without at least achieving a minimum qualifying score on your Armed Forces Qualification Test, or AFQT, which is a subset of the ASVAB.
Receive your score AFQT score by completing the Arithmetic Reasoning, Math Knowledge and Verbal Composite of the ASVAB test. According to Military.com, your AFQT score reflects your potential for training in military occupations.
Find your minimum qualifying AFQT score according to the service you plan to enter. For instance, certain military specialties will require higher scores than others. If you meet the minimum requirements, your AFQT results will automatically allow you entrance into the military. The remainder of your ASVAB results will be used in determining your abilities, not as a tool to either grant or deny entrance into the military.
