Getting Replacement Dog Tags

Those currently serving do not need to pay to replace their dog tags they can be obtained from the office that processes ID cards and CAC cards, or you may need to discuss replacing them with a mobility section or readiness center.

Because dog tags are issued to military members for identification purposes only, there is no provision for getting replacement dog tags from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard. Families who wish to have dog tags replaced for a loved one are required to have them printed anew by commercial companies that offer such services.

There are many companies that offer such services and they are easily found via Google, Amazon.com, etc.

It is recommended that families opt out of including a service members Social Security Number on such replacement dog tags this is a detail that is too easily used for nefarious purposes should the tags fall into the wrong hands.

The Purpose Of Dog Tags

In life, and in death, people want to be identified and remembered. Soldiers have used variations of dog tags and similar means of identification for hundreds of years. They were first used by US service members in the Civil War when soldiers would scratch their names and hometowns on the backs of their belt buckles or other gear. Informal identification badges soon became popular, and soldiers used a variety of pins, tags, medallions, or other objects in which they engraved their names, hometown, battles they fought in, and other information.

Dog tags werent standardized by the US Army until the early 1900s when the War Department authorized identification tags in War Department General Order No. 204. It was in WWI that soldiers were first issued two identification tags. The tags included various information, often including the members name, rank, serial number, company, regiment, or corps.

It was in WWII that dog tags earned their nickname, due to resembling dog registration tags required by many municipalities .

Through the years, the purpose has remained the same, while other features have changed, including their shape, size, the information on them, and the material they are made from. Information that has been included in dog tags through the years could include serial numbers, next of kin contact information, immunizations, and more. Todays dog tags are made from a material that is durable, but that wont rust or corrode from normal wear and tear.

Can Dod Civilians Shop At Commissary

Current restrictions and upcoming changes include the following: DOD civilians cannot use the Commissary and Exchange. Any veteran can shop at the Exchange online, but it does not mean they have in-store privileges. Currently, active duty servicemembers, their dependents and retirees can only shop there.

A Brief History Of Dog Tags

Some websites would have you believe that the use of dog tags is a uniquely American innovation, but history shows us plenty of examples of the use of such identifiers as early as Sparta and the Roman legions.

According to a book called The Late Roman Army by Pat Southern and Karen Ramsey Dixon, Roman legion recruits were given a disk to be worn around the neck with the recruits name and the name of the legion he was serving in.

Centuries later in China, both sides of a struggle known as the Taipei Revolt wore dog tags in the form of a wooden belt tag.

In the American Civil War, dog tags were not used specifically soldiers wrote their personal information on paper and pinned it to their uniforms in case they needed to be identified after being killed in action others stenciled the information on bags, clothing, etc.

In 1907, the British Army adopted the use of something close to what would be known as the American dog tag these identity discs would later morph into something a bit horrifying in 1916 the British Army would issue two tags made of vulcanized asbestos to each soldier. A large cache of these dog tags were discovered in a field in England in 2017-approximately 14,000 in all.

Why The History Lesson

Lost military ID card

Its important to understand the purpose of dog tags and the information they contain before ordering a replacement set of dog tags. If you are currently serving in the military and need a replacement set, you can get them issued at no cost. Contact your personnel unit and they can issue them to you or tell you where you can get a set issued. These should only be used in the line of duty. Dont hang them from the mirror on your car or display them at home. There is no need, and displaying your personal information is not only unnecessary but potentially harmful.
