Can I Be In The Military And College At The Same Time
If youre on active duty and thinking about pursuing further education, you might find yourself wondering, Can I be in the military and college at the same time? Youll be interested to know that the answer to that question is a resounding, Yes! Thousands of servicemembers enroll in college during their military careers to boost professional goals, accelerate personal development, and gain increases in rank and pay. Success in college has increased with the growth of military-friendly colleges online. In addition to active military students, veterans and their family members are among the thousands who benefit by earning online degrees.
What Can You Do With A College Degree In The Military
Like the civilian world, many options exist for how students use their degree within the military. Each branch of the armed forces needs qualified and educated professionals to carry out roles that require skills ranging from accounting to medicine to law. Keep reading to learn about just a few roles available in the military.

Online Degrees That Build Work Skills
Through a college education, active-duty students can enhance their existing job skills and even advance in rank as they apply what theyve learned to their positions. Spittler explains that a few of the more common National programs known to help military students advance in their careers include information technology management, cybersecurity, and leadership programs.
Some servicemembers choose programs that closely relate to what they are doing on active duty. For instance, many military medics or corpsmen pursue online or on-campus registered nursing programs. While you can serve as a Navy hospital corpsman without being a registered nurse, this educational experience can help you enter the nursing field after active duty.
Other students decide to pursue degrees that dont relate to their role in the military, opting for something that they might consider to be more marketable when they transition out of service, Spittler says. The variety of programs NU offers, more than 75 in all, gives them a lot of options to choose from and the one-month course format is very attractive to a servicemember who may need to pause for a month and then restart classes again.
You Have To Be A Scholar
Courtesy Air Force Academy
Academics at the service academies are extremely challenging. So it’s no wonder they have high academic standards for incoming cadets and midshipmen. As with most traditional colleges, the military service academies rely heavily on SAT and ACT scores. Although you can get an appointment with lower scores if you’re strong in other areas, shoot for a combined SAT score of at least 1,260 to 1,300 or an ACT score of at least 29 to 31. Those are considered “average” marks for most years, so higher scores are even better.
The academies super-score SAT and ACT resultsfor example, combining your highest SAT reading score and highest SAT math score, even if they’re from different test daysand that can make a big difference. Nathaniel Erickson urges high-school students who want to attend a service academy to “take as many times as you can, and take as many practice tests as you can.” If you’re really struggling with the SAT or ACT, Erickson suggests “focusing on one section at a time.” For example, concentrate on the SAT’s reading portion for one test, then pivot to math and take the SAT again.

Joining Space Force As A Civilian Or Federal Employee
The first hurdle for many to overcome is the decision of whether to try to join Space Force as a military member or civilian. Civilian federal jobs, especially where tech industry-type gigs are concerned, have strict qualification and educational requirements.
Those who are interested in civilian jobs with USSF should visit the United States governments official job website, USAJobs.gov and search for jobs with the keywords United States Space Force or United States Space Forces.
The results you get from your search may depend greatly on the current number of jobs on offer at the moment. In some cases you may get NO search results or results that point elsewhere on the internet.
What about those already employed as a DoD civilian in an agency that was meant to transfer over to Space Force jurisdiction? An FAQ on the Air Force official site states that in typical cases, Civilians in units that are part of the Space Force will become Department of the Air Force employees. All provisions of law and policies affecting civilians will remain the same. There is no change to pay, benefits, or retirement.
Space Force official site literature reminds civilians interested in jobs with USSF to apply via USAJOBS.gov.
Looking at USAJobs and other job boards may or may not return job openingsSpace Force will have multiple rounds of hiring and training during the initial years of the new military service.
Local Admissions Representatives Can Help You Get In
Courtesy Air Force Academy
In addition to the academy-based admissions teams and regional admissions officers, the service academies have local representatives throughout the country who volunteer their time to mentor high school students seeking appointments. The Naval Academy calls them Blue and Gold Officers, the Air Force Academy calls them Admissions Liaison Officers , West Point calls them Field Force Representatives , the Coast Guard Academy calls them Academy Admissions Partners , and the Merchant Marine Academy calls them Admissions Field Representatives .
Local representatives can be a great source of information, guidance and support. Louis Burts says his FFR “was probably my best friend throughout this process, besides my mom. If I had a question, I could text her or call her on anything.” Kayla Malone has similar praise for her B& G officer: “I don’t know what I would have done if I didn’t have hershe knew all the little ins and outs of everything that you need to know.””Utilize your Blue and Gold officer,” Sawyer Neal advises future Naval Academy candidates. “Ask them questions. Don’t be afraid to call them every once in a while. Set up a phone call to talk to them and give them updates on how you’re doing.”

Girls In The Military
For many years, girls were not allowed into the military. The stance that the military had on women enrolling into their armed services was well known as a negative one. During such times as World War I, World War II, India, many women in were not allowed into the military and instead were expected to work at the textile factories and other industries to help benefit their family as well as any sort of military textiles and supplies that were needed.
Thanks to those who sought and flocked to enact girls into the military, there are now women who served proud for our country. There are many women and young girls that enlist into the military everyday. Their reasoning is for enlisting into the military are as wide and as different as those who are there. Many women enlist into various branches of the military as a result of having been in school activities that word created around military functions, the most common organization being ROTC. Is often during high school that many women find that they have a great interest in the military. Other women may find that they enroll in the military because they want to serve their country while there are those who may enlist in the military to further their college education.

Getting Fit With Fitt
As a rule of thumb, ease into your activities, gradually increase each element of FITT, and end each session with a cool-down. For example:
- Begin with a 5- to 10-minute warm-up. Walking, biking or a slow jog will increase blood flow to the muscles and lightly increase your heart rate. Follow up with some light stretching of the muscles you will be using in your workout.
- Improving your overall fitness is most effectively done through a combination of 20 to 60 minutes of aerobic and strength exercises. The two sample fitness sessions below are based on Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology guidelines.
- A 5- to 10-minute cool-down helps return your body to its normal, pre-exercise condition. Suddenly stopping an intense workout can make you dizzy, nauseated or even faint. Walking, biking or a slow jog will gradually bring down your heart rate and relieve muscle soreness.
