Enlisted Personnel Experience & Training

In order to become an enlisted service member in the U.S. military, it is required that applicants have completed their GED or high school diploma. Once enlisted, many enlisted service members will train for jobs and learn skills and get hands-on experience in fields of employment such as transportation, human services, office administration, or mechanics. These skills learned during their time in the military will usually prove to be an asset to veteran job seekers as this experience transfers well to civilian employment.

Officer Experience & Training

Officers in the U.S. military are almost always required to possess a four-year degree or equivalent. Many colleges and universities have Reserve Officer Training Corps programs on campus, which allow cadets to have the benefit of receiving a paid college education in exchange for their commitment to serve as officers in the Military after they graduate. Within the military, Officers act as managers and are placed in leadership positions that involve making tactical decisions, planning and directing operations.

Attend A Service Institution

Each branch of the military has a service academy or college designed to train and bring officers into the service. Most students pay very little to attend, as the government covers all major expenses like tuition, room and board. Entrance into a service academy is highly competitive due to its affordability and career prospects. After graduation, officers begin their careers in the armed forces immediately.

Trust Your Recruiter To Guide You

If youre considering joining the Army, your recruiter will be there to support you throughout every step of the process. Recruiters know the Army well, so theyre qualified to help you determine if its the right fit for you. They can help you define your goals, plan for key steps in the process, and guide you in the right direction.

Specialize And Direct Commission

Each branch of the armed services needs highly educated and specialized officers to work in fields like medicine and law. Often, officers in these career fields, along with chaplains, complete their advanced degrees and then receive a direct commission into their chosen branch of the military with no prior training.

After receiving their commission, they attend training similar to that of OCS, though it’s often somewhat shorter since they already have a specific occupation they’ll perform for their service.

Sailors rotate between sea and shore duty. You may spend three years assigned to a ships command and then rotate to serve three more years at a shore command. A typical sea deployment on a Navy ship can last anywhere from six to nine months. Ships typically deploy once every 18-24 months. In preparation for deployment, Sailors should be prepared to go to sea for 10 to 14 days each month for training.

Navy Seal Nuclear Training Advancement Programs

Several Navy enlistment programs, such as enlistment in the Nuclear Program, enlistment in the SEAL Challenge Program, and enlistment in the Advanced Electronic Field/Advanced Technical Field programs offer accelerated advancement to the grade of E-4.

In general, these applicants enlist at the grade of E-1, then receive an accelerated promotion to E-2 after graduating boot camp. After minimum time-in-grade during technical training , they are promoted to the grade of E-3.

After completion of A-School, they may be promoted to the grade of E-4. These programs do not preclude enlistment at pay grade E-2 or E-3 under the above programs.

Why Does The Military Have Enlistment Age Limits

The minimum and maximum age limits for potential enlistees ensure they have had the opportunity to meet their minimal education requirements and are in good physical condition. The goal is to recruit educated, able-bodied enlistees, minimize the risk of injury and reduce their recovery time if injured.

Federal law has established the maximum military recruitment age limit to be age 42, although each service branch has the flexibility to establish its own limits below that age. For almost all male U.S. citizens ages 18-25 living in the United States, there is a requirement to register with the Selective Service System.

Army Drops Requirement For High School Diploma Amid Recruiting Crisis

The Army is tossing its mandate for potential recruits to have a high school diploma or GED certificate to enlist in the service, in one of the most dramatic moves yet in the escalating recruiting crisis hitting the entire Defense Department.

On Thursday, the service announced that individuals may enlist without those previously required education certifications if they ship to basic training this fiscal year, which ends Oct. 1.

Recruits must also be at least 18 years old and otherwise qualify for a job in the active-duty Army. They also must score at least a 50 on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, or ASVAB, an SAT-style quiz to measure a potential recruit’s academic ability.

A 50 on the test is a relatively low score, with 31 being the minimum to qualify for service. Combat arms jobs such as infantrymen and cavalry scouts need only minimal scores to serve, while admin work such as a human resources specialist or public affairs require scores of 100 or higher.

Previously, the Army would allow people to enlist if they hadn’t finished high school yet at the age of 17 with parental consent. Those recruits typically wouldn’t ship to basic training until they completed school.

The change follows another shift in policy this week when the service relaxed its tattoo rules, allowing potential recruits to enlist with tattoos on their hands and neck, which previously needed waivers.

Submit Your Application 4medical Exam

You will then take a two part medical exam: First there is a questionnaire on your medical history including specific information on your medication. Then the medical staff will conduct a physical exam to measure your height, weight, evaluate your vision, colour perception and hearing. The second step is a medical file review to determine any limitations that will affect your training and career.

Where Does Basic Training Take Place

For all full-time regular force candidates, basic training takes place at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec.

All part-time candidates joining their local Primary Reserve unit will undergo similar basic training objectives. Reserve units will conduct their Basic Training either at the local reserve unit location or at a Canadian Armed Forces training centre. Locations vary depending on units. Talk to a Primary Reserve unit recruiter for more information on their Basic Training program.

The Applicant Pool Has Been Shrinking For Years

Want to Enlist in the U.S. Military? Enlistment Process Explained!

Its not just education that has kept potential recruits out of uniform. Every year, fewer and fewer potential applicants qualify for military service. Obesity, criminal records, and mental health issues cull the pool of potential warfighters. In 1973 the draft law expired in the United States, and Congress refused to extend it. Since then, weve had an all-volunteer military and rely on a constant stream of recruits each year.

In 2017, the Pentagon conducted an extensive study of Americans between the ages of 17 and 24 and found that 71% were ineligible to serve in the United States armed forces because they failed to meet minimum standards or have other disqualifiers. Unfortunately, the situation has only gotten worse since then. More than 24 million of the 34 million young people in the cohort noted above could not join the armed forces if they wanted to, which most of them do not.

Here is the problem only 29% of our young people are qualified to serve. This workforce shortage presents a real compromise to our national security. There are only so many ways to deepen the applicant pool one is to drop educational requirements.

Enlisted Vs Officer Ranks In The Military: A Complete Guide

All branches of the military employ enlisted service members and commissioned officers. While some of the requirements for joining the armed forces are the same for both groups, there are significant differences between these two types of military personnel.

Understanding how the roles differ can help you make an informed decision about how to join the military if you choose to do so. In this article, we explain what enlisted means, describe the officer ranks, offer a list of differences between the two groups and highlight how to enlist or become an officer in the military.

What Is An Officer

Military officers are members of the U.S. armed forces who hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university and meet other requirements. Some officers, like doctors and lawyers, immediately specialize in their chosen field, while others are assigned to a squadron with a particular military mission.

Once assigned, they receive training in that field and provide supervisory support to the enlisted personnel who perform specific jobs for the organization. Officer grades and ranks are different from branch to branch, but most have at least eight promotion opportunities.

Women Sex And The Military

The unspoken message that the military continues to convey is that war is for men and women should stay away. Half of all women in the military are assigned to traditional roles such as cooking, nursing, and secretarial duties.

Rape and sexual harassment occur frequently in the armed forces. One report stated that 64 percent of women in the military have experienced sexual harassment. Often men use rank to try to get sexual favors. Women who refused to comply have been labeled lesbians.

And After You Leave The Armed Forces

Soldiers are often discharged with no money to continue in the civilian world and no transferable job skills. Unemployment lines are filled with veterans who are poorly qualified and lack the useful skills for civilian employment. Many veterans remain jobless for long periods and are a large part of the homeless and prison populations. Even those who are gainfully employed will remain behind their civilian counterparts in income and advancement for the rest of their careers. Once you have been in the military, you cant catch up with the rest of the world.

The military stays with you in other ways as well. Much of the appeal is the idea of proving yourself, developing discipline, being all you can be. Perhaps you want to carry army pride with you all your life. Remember, however, that this is only part of the picture. No one can participate in violence and remain either unscarred or indifferent. You will always be part of the destruction you supported. And if the United States does fight a war, you may never be able to forget the people you killed. For some people the weight of these memories is too heavy to bear. The suicide rate among Vietnam veterans is many times the national average.

Enlisting in the military is a serious commitment. Before you join, know what is in the fine print. Learn all the details and choose whats best for you. Think about it.
