Mortarmen operate heavy and powerful mortars to give ground troops an advantage during combat. A mortar is a smoothbore, high-angle weapon that has more power and range than any other weapon troops on the ground use. Mortarmen should know how to operate two types of mortars:

  • The 60-millimeter light mortar, which weighs 18 to 45 pounds and fires 4-pound ammunition at close range

  • The 81-millimeter medium mortar, which weighs 90 pounds and fire 10-pound ammunition at long range

These weapons provide indirect fire during combat, meaning the operator does not have a clear target to aim at. Therefore, mortars have a broad and explosive radius to ensure they hit their target.

A mortarman’s job responsibilities might include:

  • Carrying heavy weapons over all types of terrain

  • Looking for enemy troops and their weapon locations

  • Using two-way radios and equipment to give and receive information and instructions

  • Setting up, loading and firing 60-millimeter and 81-millimeter mortars

  • Cleaning and storing the mortars

  • Finding and removing or neutralizing mines

  • Creating strategies and plans for missions and combat

Being a mortarman requires significant physical strength, teamwork and calm under pressure.

How To Become An Aerial Firefighter Pilot

Ongoing demand makes aerial flame suppression a hot zone for pilots.

Helicopter pilots often perform bucket drops to assist in fire suppression, as in this National Park Service operation in the Grand Canyon.National Park Service

While we dont have hard figures on their ranks or the number of jobs that exist, demand for aerial firefighter pilots is increasing, industry experts say. There are opportunities, but its not very well-organized, says Dean Talley, an air tanker captain and board member of the Associated Aerial Firefighters. In fact, operators are having a lot of trouble filling positions, with retirements creating vacancies and brisk airline hiring draining the already-small applicant pool for aviation firefighters, the former Coast Guard and ag pilot says. The problem continues today.

Federal agencies employ some aerial firefighter pilots, but most work under seasonal contracts for companies the agencies hire for fire protection. The U.S. Forest Service, the largest federal contractor of aerial firefighting services, also has 52 full-time pilots, according to an agency spokesperson. The Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Land Management and National Park Service also contract aerial firefighting services, as do individual states and agencies within states.

Some pilots, rather than fire bombing, fly the King Airs or OV-10 Broncos that often serve as the observation platform for the forward air controller who directs the fire attack.
