You And Your Husband Conor Are Both In The Militarydid You Purposefully Want To Start A Family With Someone Who Had A Similar Career As You

So You Want to Be a MILITARY DOCTOR [Ep. 5]

I never thought that I would marry a military guy, and Im sure that Conor didnt think that he would marry a military doctor either! We actually met when we were both deployed to Iraq in 2011. We didnt date until two years after we returned, but we had become really good friends up to that point. When my sister met him, I remember her saying, Youre going to marry this guy. I laughed and said, I dont know, I dont think so. She was right, and shes not often right! It ended up working out very well for us.

Conor loves that Im in the military, and I love the support that I have from him to pursue this career. There is a lot of unpredictability when youre active duty. Its not common that military couples both stay military. You never know whos going to deploy when, and you always need a backup to the backup which can be really challenging. I have this career skill set that would allow me to work as a civilian doctor pretty much anywhere that Conor would be stationed. Instead, he loves the fact that I understand the military lifestyle. If he gets called to work after hours or in the field, I understand what thats like and vice versa, especially with the travel I do. I couldnt imagine doing what I do without a partner who fully understands and supports that.

What Is The Difference Between Hospital Corpsmen And Military Nurses

The primary difference is that Hospital Corpsmen are enlisted military personnel and military nurses are officers. Hospital Corpsmen perform various roles within the militarys medical field. Some Corpsmen operate biomedical equipment, some serve as operating room techs, some are trained to perform dental repairs, some deliver emergency care in the field, and some are assigned clerical duties.

As a Corpsman, you are required to enlist for five years in the military. You must have a high school diploma or equivalent and a score of 146 on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery.

Upon enlisting as a Corpsman, you must complete an initial 7-9 week Boot Camp and then technical training in medical education based on specific curriculum set by the military. As an enlisted member of the military, pay grade starts lower than military nurses with similar opportunities to move up in rank and pay grade based on years of service.

Five Salary And Benefits For Military Nurses

The salary range of a military nurse ranges from $58,000 on upward. Your salary as a military nurse is based on your education level upon commissioning, your rank, and any special certifications you may hold.

In addition to your salary, you will have the option to accept a sign-on bonus or student loan repayment. A person who is a registered nurse and agrees to accept a commission as an officer may be paid an accession bonus of up to $30,000 for a four-year contract or up to $20,000 for a three-year contract.

Nurses who choose to accept the student loan repayment have the option of having their loans repaid up to a maximum of $40,000 per year.

Becoming a military physician: The basics

The second step is a medical file review to determine any limitations that will affect your training and career.

Physical And Psychological Standards

All candidates must undergo a physical exam. Your physical and psychological health must demonstrate that you are ready to serve in case you are deployed. The location of your physical exam will depend on the medical program you want to enter. If you are trying to get into a civilian MD or DO program and apply to HPSP, you will have your physical exam at a Military Entrance Processing Station near you. If you are an applicant to the USUHS, you will take your physical through the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board.

You will also need to pass a security investigation. This investigation is used to examine your history and proclivity for potentially disqualifying conditions and circumstances, such as a history of violent behavior, compulsive or addictive behavior, symptoms of possible emotional or mental problems, and so on.

Just like other medical school applicants, candidates to become military physicians must demonstrate the qualities and pre-professional competencies expected of all medical professionals. Additionally, they must showcase their readiness and suitability for the military.

Additionally, all physicians must complete one year of graduate medical education or residency, must have a valid divers license, and should be board certified or board eligible.

Favorite family tradition? Conors family has themed Thanksgivings. The first year I went, we were dating and it was a 70s theme, and I thought that he might have been playing a prank on me to dress up in bell-bottoms, but they really go all out and its fun! We also try to take part in local and cultural activities wherever we are currently stationed.

Easy go-to family meal to prepare? Anything in the Instant Pot! Meats are quick and easy to cook, and well do a steamed veggie and five-minute couscous for a healthy, easy meal. If you havent tried basil and herb pearled couscous, youre missing out it may be our familys favorite food

Your dream vacation? Hiking the circuit in Torres del Paine in Patagonia, Chile.

Last home item you splurged on? We just got new bedroom furniture and a King-sized bed. We tried the mattress in a box, and I had my doubts, but weve both slept so well since!

Most embarrassing mom moment? We had some travel delays the Sunday after Thanksgiving when Liam was just over a year old. When we finally got on a flight, Liam had missed his nap, and our usually well-seasoned traveler was not a happy camper. He knocked over a glass which broke on the plane, and the flight attendant had to pick up the pieces with the sticky side of a maxi pad!

1. Make time for exercise. I use the Peloton bike or treadmill for working out at home or on the go. I also use the app for coached runs when I run with a stroller or for workouts in a hotel when I travel for work.

2. Keep solids simple. We did baby-led weaning AKA started feeding our son real food and not purees or rice cereal when Liam turned 6 months old. We dont prepare special kids foodhe eats what we eat!

3. Be organized! My favorite app is Wunderlist to keep track of to-dos, groceries, and even lists of movies wed like to see. Its sharable, so if my husband swings by the grocery store, he can see what Ive put on the list.

4. Shop for staples. Use Amazon Primes for those items that are easier to just put on autopilot !

5. Outsource what you can. I get some help with cleaning every other week. Thats less time I have to spend changing sheets and cleaning the house and more time to spend with my family. In between, I have Liam help me. He loves to put laundry from the washer into the dryer and follows me with my vacuum with his little toy vacuum!

How To Become A Doctor In The Air Force

If you want to become a doctor but can’t stomach the thought of huge student loans, the Army might be an option for you. Army doctors typically commit a certain time to the Army in return for free schooling. There are strict requirements, but you’ll have the benefit of entering the Army as an officer instead of as an enlisted soldier.

Can You Walk Us Through Your Daily Routine

Typically, Conor gets up at 5 every morning and he works out right away. I will wake up anytime between 5 am and 6am. If Liam is still sleeping, I sometimes workout, sometimes not. Liam gets up at 6am pretty much every morning. Ill usually make him breakfast. Hes a really good eater, so hell eat whatever we decide to give him whether its a waffle, a whole wheat bagel, cereal, or eggs. I do the dishes, make lunch for myself, and I have coffee. We have a dog and a cat, so next, I feed the pets and let the dog out. If I didnt have time to work out, Conor will take Liam into daycare once hes dressed and ready to go. If I was able to squeeze a workout in, Ill bring him in a little bit later with me.

At my current job, I usually go to my office at 8am, and I stay there until about noon. I have lunch, then Ill go over to the clinic at the hospital on our base and Ill see patients in the family medicine clinic from 12:40pm to about 4:30pm. When I finish, Conor and I will text each other and make a plan to decide who is going to get Liam. For example, If I wasnt able to work out in the morning, I will go home and exercise and Conor will pick up Liam. If I was able to work out, usually Ill get him after work.

Can You Become A Specialist In The Military

Yes, you can practice as a specialist in the military. For example, you can become a surgeon in the Air Force, where you can take care of a whole squadron.

You can also serve in the military as an anesthesiologist, emergency medicine specialist, ophthalmologist, and more. In addition to performing medical services, you can also teach military medical students or research certain diseases with the military.

However, it would be best to remember that not all kinds of doctors may be required in all military branches, such as pediatrics, radiation oncology, dermatology, urology, and the like.

However, there are specialties that are frequently available as they are always needed. These specialties include general surgery and family practice.

# 8 Gradually Increasing Income

I criss-cross this country preaching to students, residents, and attendings the merits of living like a resident and growing into your income as slowly as you can. But I confess that I had an advantage that many of of them will never have. I was FORCED to grow gradually into my attending income. In the 14 years since I started getting a paycheck as a resident, my income has gone up every single year. Now we’ve always saved, and as an attending always saved a lot, but it’s a little easier not to spend $300K as a brand-new attending when you’re getting paid $120K as a brand-new attending. I sometimes wonder how much of our financial success I can attribute to the fact that we had many small raises instead of one big one like most emergency docs.

Six Military Nurse Career Advancement

Why I chose NOT to Become a Military Doctor!

Pay increases in the military rely on many factors. Moving up in rank is the number one factor. This will increase not only your pay but also the stipends that you are allotted. Deployments will offer you things such as hazardous pay for the time you are deployed.
