How to Get a Civil Service Job at a Military Base

by MilitaryBenefits

There are too many job opportunities available on a military base to name them all, but you can find everything from typical fast-food jobs to high-paying Civil Service positions. These jobs are available to spouses, retirees, dependents, and veterans. In this article, we will try to answer some of your questions on how to get a job on a military base.

What Are Some Of The Things Employers Ask For When Applying For A Job

When you apply for a job on a military base as a spouse or military dependent, they may ask you for information about your sponsor. When asked whos your sponsor, they want to know the name of the currently serving military member in the family assigned to that particular base. That question wont apply to all applicants and can be a source of confusion if youre not familiar with the term. As a spouse or dependent, you may also be eligible for local hiring incentives that are not available to civilians looking for a job on-base

Some jobs may require a security clearance. If you are a veteran or active-duty military member, its not a big deal. You may have already gone through the process and have had at least a Secret security clearance. In some cases, even the most basic types of jobs may require this. It just depends on the type of military installation. For example, a job as a coffee vendor at the Pentagon may require the kind of background check you would never need to apply for a job at your local café.

But these practices are, in many cases, formalities. If you are asked to consent to a background check, be ready to answer questions that might require you to do a bit of preparation. Do you remember your first street address? Dates of your previous jobs? Brushing up on your personal history can help in such cases.

How To Get A Job On A Military Base

The idea of working on a U.S. military base may appeal to your sense of patriotism or adventure, or you might be seeking a base job because your military spouse is assigned to the base. Civilian jobs on most bases within the U.S. range from janitorial and customer service jobs through well-paying supervisory positions in finance, personnel and scientific fields. Overseas bases offer more limited options, since Status of Forces Agreements with host countries often mandate that many non-sensitive positions be filled by local personnel. Proof of U.S. citizenship and the ability to pass a background check are required for virtually all on-base positions.

Contact the Civilian Personnel Office at the base you want to work, since the CPO is responsible for filling administrative and professional positions at the base. If you’re the spouse of a military member assigned to that base, you may benefit from hiring preferences given to military spouses, although you must still meet the core requirements of the position. The Family Support Center at some bases also provides assistance to military spouses seeking on-base employment.

    Accommodation For Those Who Serve

Private Military Contractor (Pros & Cons – How to get a job)

Being a regular member of the armed forces infers a commitment to move, or be moved, to locations around the UK and overseas. We understand the impact this can have on service personnel and particularly their families and children who may travel with them. With this in mind, we have made it a condition of service to ensure personnel are provided with high quality subsided accommodation whilst they are serving.

The accommodation is a fundamental part of the overall package for service personnel and, depending on individual circumstances, can take the form of either publicly provided family or single accommodation either at their duty station or very nearby to it. MOD has targets to ensure the accommodation provided is of good quality, suitably located and affordable indeed, when compared to renting similar property types in the private sector, charges payable for MOD provided accommodation are considerably lower.

In addition to providing services accommodation, the MOD also operates the Forces Help to Buy scheme. The scheme offers military personnel an interest free advance of up to 50% of their gross annual salary to assist them buying their first home or, in particular circumstances, extending their existing home or moving property within the UK or Republic of Ireland. The advance is repaid directly from salary over 10 years.
