Yes, all Reserve or National Guard are eligible if you have 20 years of creditable service OR you are a permanent medical retiree OR you are a TERA retiree who is:
- receiving military retired pay, and
- who has a 10% or greater VA rated injury and
- whose military retired pay is reduced by VA disability payments
The previous CRSC requirement to have at least 7200 retirement points no longer applies as of January 1, 2004. Grey area retirees become eligible for CRSC at age sixty when they begin to receive retired pay.

How To Apply For Crsc Benefits

Elect Crsc Over Crdp: What Is The Difference
10 USC §1414 allows some retirees concurrent receipt of both retirement and disability pay or CRDP. As previously discussed, lobbyists have pushed to expand CRDP to eligible retirees with service-related disability ratings of less than 50 percent. Although you do not need to apply for CRDP, which allows you to receive the full amount of retired and VA disability benefits, it is taxable income. CRSC is like VA disability checks. It is not taxed.
You must therefore choose either CRSC or CRDP. You cannot receive both. DFAS will automatically pay CRDP to members with VA disability ratings of 50 percent or higherunless they elect to receive CRSC. An approved CRSC application means that CRSC payments will apply. The application automatically allows DFAS to choose the greater of the two payment amounts.
When Do I Start Receiving Payment
Once DFAS receives a copy of your CRSC award letter from your branch of service, it should take about 30-60 days to receive your first payment.
Checks are issued on the first business day of the month. Pay will be direct deposited into the same account as your retired pay. If you are not receiving retired pay, it will be deposited into the same account as your VA pay. If you have your retired pay checks mailed, the payment will be sent to your mailing address that is on record at DFAS.

Understanding Concurrent Retirement Disability Compensation
This is a special compensation that you must qualify for and your Retirement Service Officer must put in for you. This applies to Active Duty and Reservists, but you must meet these requirements to qualify:
- Have at least 20 years of qualifying service
- Must be 60 years or older
- Have at least a 50% VA Disability Rating
You cannot receive this if you have not reached the 60 yrs of age qualification you cannot medically retire before the age of 60 and expect to get concurrent benefits from the VA and your retirement stipend. This will not kick in until the age of 60! They have put the Combat-Related Special Compensation in place to help compensate your income until the offset that you will receive at 60 yrs old.
With all of this new information, it may take you a few times of reading this to let it sink in. I Received More Than One Payment Is This Correct
You may receive more than one payment if you receive a new rating from the VA allowing for a retroactive increase or if you apply for reconsideration with your branch of service. You also may receive multiple payments if you are due money from both DFAS and the VA. Each agency is responsible for issuing payment of their portion of the entitlement.

Understanding Military Disability Retirement
According to RC Retirement, there are some simple things to understand when going through this process. Active Duty service members can medically retire due to a disability and receive compensation for it.
When you are Active Duty and become unable to perform your duties due to a disability, you can apply to retire based upon the severity of these disabilities. Your Branch of Service can have your conditions evaluated by the Physical Evaluation Board to determine how disabled you are. This is similar to how the VA estimates a Veteran to grant Disability Compensation. However, the rating is given by the Branch of Service and NOT the Department of Veterans Affairs.
There are two retirement disability statuses Permanent and Temporary.
Your Branch of Services Physical Evaluation Board will determine which one you qualify for and what your combined rating will be. 30% or higher will put you on the PDRL, 30% or lower will return you to active duty after 3 years.
To be put on the Permanent Disability Retirement List , you must be considered unrecoverable, meaning you will not recover from your disability. Temporary Disability Retirement List is a temporary rating due to temporary conditions, they expect you will recover from the disability.

A 20 Years Or More Of Military Service Or Otherwise Entitled To Retired Pay
For purposes of military retirement plans, the 20-year service requirement is calculated using a retired pay multiplier. The DoD multiplier chart shows different retirement plans based on active or reserve duty and disability retirement programs.
For example, members retired under Public Law 102-484 or Temporary Early Retirement Authority may make the 20-year requirement if they are credited with a 50 percent service multiplier, or if they return to active duty long enough to achieve 20 years . Documentary evidence of TERA retirement is generally sufficient to qualify as retired for purposes of CRSC eligibility.

CRSC Calculation for Chapter 61 Retirees
Title 10 USC Chapter 61 defines different categories of medical leave and retirement. Chapter 61 retirees are those who have medically retired from military service with a VA disability rating of 30 percent or above. This includes those on the Temporary Disabled Retirement List.
However, military departments are not bound by the DoD retirement pay multiplier. Instead, they will look at the supporting information submitted with the application to determine whether Chapter 61 and TERA retirees are eligible for CRSC qualifications.
Amount Of Crsc Benefit
The amount of the CRSC benefit, like disability compensation payment rates, varies based on your rating, whether you have a spouse and/or children, and other factors. The VA website posts the Veterans Compensation Benefits Rate Tables.
The CRSC benefit is generally retroactive to the date you were deemed eligible for the program. However, retroactive pay will go back only six years from the date the VA granted you compensation. This means that if you apply for CRSC six years after the VA starts paying you disability compensation, your CRSC retroactive payment will not go back further than six years.

What Is Combat Related Special Compensation
Combat-Related Special Compensation was created to replace the VA disability offset for service-connected disabilities that are a direct result of combat related injuries, to include injuries that occur during combat or armed conflict, or during combat training, training that simulates war, while performing hazardous duty, or from exposure to an instrumentality of war .
Combat-Related Special Compensation provides compensation to eligible military retirees that will replace some or all of the VA disability offset. Their military retirement pay will no longer be deducted by the amount of their VA disability compensation. Instead, they will receive their full military retirement pay, and a CRSC payment based on the percentage of their disability rating that is considered combat-related. Its important to note that CRSC payments only apply to the disabilities that are considered combat related. So it is possible that your CRSC payment can be less than your overall VA disability rating, and thus less than your VA disability offset. Like VA Disability compensation, CRSC payments are tax free.
