Why Become an Army Junior ROTC Instructor

All instructors must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a field related to the subject they teach. They must also have a minimum of 20 years of active duty, have already applied for retirement within the last six months, or have been retired for less than five years. Although not a requirement, most instructors also have a master’s degree or higher. As well as academic qualifications and experience, ROTC instructors must meet Department of Defense weight, body and fat standards and display high standards of military bearing and moral character.

Air Force Rotc Scholarships For High School Students

You can apply for one of the following AFROTC scholarships if youre currently a high-school student who will soon graduate and plan to attend a four-year college program.

Type 1 Scholarship

As a recipient of this scholarship, youd receive an award that covers full tuition and authorized fees at any public or private college/university with an Air Force ROTC detachment. Youd also receive a monthly stipend, ranging from $300-500, for living expenses and an annual stipend of $900 for textbooks.

Type 2 Scholarship

As a recipient of this scholarship, youd receive an award that pays up to $18,000 per year in college tuition and authorized fees at any public or private college/universitywith an Air Force ROTC detachment. Youd also receive a monthly stipend, ranging from $300-500, for living expenses and an annual stipend of $900 for textbooks.

Type 7 Scholarship

As a recipient of this scholarship, youd receive an award that covers full tuition and authorized fees at any public in-state college/university with an Air Force ROTC detachment. Youd also receive a monthly stipend, ranging from $300-500, for living expenses and an annual stipend of $900 for textbooks.

With a Type 7 scholarship, youd also have the option to convert your scholarship to a three-year Type 2 scholarship that can be used at out-of-state or private colleges/universities.

The interview is worth 14% of your overall score. Youll be scheduled for an interview if you are selected as a scholarship finalist.

The interview is scored in five areas. Here are some tips on acing these sections:

  • Scholar take AP/Honors classes, score well on your college tests, and rank in the top 10% of your high school class
  • Athlete competitive participation in sports and receiving varsity letter
  • Leader participation in student government, captain of a team, leader in volunteer organizations
  • Personal Qualities Subjective Evaluation
  • Potential Subjective Evaluation

We recommend conducting your interview with a Professor of Military Science, if at all possible. This is due to the fact that the board score has other Professors of Military Science, so there is a greater chance that their opinions will be valued and they will understand the process from a higher level perspective.

Bring documents to verify your participation in activities to your interview. You control many of the points here so make sure you get credit for everything you are involved in with your interviewer.

We recommend addressing areas of weakness with the interviewer and make sure they record these and how you are overcoming those weaknesses, specifically for the board.

What Is Your Enrollment Status

All students registered for Military Science classes are referred to as Cadets. A Cadet is a trainee that is enrolled in a military officer producing program. The ROTC program has several categories of Cadets enrolled in the program: Participating Cadets, Enrolled Cadets, and Contracted Cadets.

  • Participating Cadets Registered for the MS class through the university and responsible for attending all classroom activities.
  • Enrolled Cadets Has completed all documents listed in the ROTC Enrollment Packet. These students are eligible to attend all extra curricular activities associated with ROTC, such as: physical fitness training, leadership labs, and Field Training Exercises which include rifle ranges, land navigation training, obstacle courses, and leader reaction courses.
  • Contracted Cadets These students have completed all documents listed in the ROTC Contracting Packet and have been identified as possessing the character and attributes necessary of an officer candidate. They have signed the Army enlistment contract and ROTC contract and are working toward becoming an Army Officer upon graduating with a bachelors or masters degree.

Basic Course: normally takes place during your first two years in college as elective courses and involves one elective class or lab each semester.
