Die Hard With A Vengeance

If you train hard, you’ll not only be hard, you’ll be hard to beat

Phase one culminates in jumping out of a thirty-five-foot tower and zip-lining over a sandpit, which, trust me, is absolutely nothing like jumping out of a plane.

Phase two of Jump School is called Tower Week. In this phase, soldiers work up to jumping out of a two-hundred-and-fifty-foot tower and riding an impossibly steep zip line meant to mimic an actual jump.

In the summer of 2008, Fort Bennings towers were out of commission for a reason that was beyond my pay grade, but Ive heard theyre quite effective.

So, instead of Tower Week, my class simply repeated Ground Week, while adding in a few extra thirty-five-foot tower visits for good measure.

I could tell the airborne cadre were a little restless at the process of having to repeat week one, because, by the time of our tenth or jump low tower zip line, they were making us yell our favorite movie and name before zipping off. Die Hard with a Vengeance! I yelled, adding, Private Piha!

I waited for the customary pat on the rear end to signify my release from the tower, but it didnt come. Reluctantly, I turned around. The cadre was smiling. What in the hell kind of name is Piha, Private?

Its Greek and Jewish, and also, I think, a little Spanish, Sergeant Airborne.

Pilot Height And Weight Requirements

With that said, specific jobs in the Air Force have their own requirements.

For example, all pilot candidates must meet the following:

  • Must be no less than 64 inches short, and 77 inches tall when standing.
  • Must be 34 40 inches tall when sitting.
  • Must weight no less than 160 lbs. and no more than 231 lbs.

There are also specific height and weight requirements for specific air frames, which will be discussed at your pilot training.

Additionally, there are other health and vision requirements that pilot candidates must meet.

They include:

  • No history of hay fever, allergies, or asthma after the age of 12.
  • Normal color vision with near visual acuity of 20/30 without correction.
  • Distance visual acuity of no worse than 20/70 in each eye, correctable to 20/20.
  • Meet refraction, accommodation, and astigmatism requirements.

Before you visit your local recruiter, be sure you meet the minimum qualifications for serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Height And Weight Standards

The Air Force does not offer a weight reduction program. Currently, all applicants must meet a weight requirement based on their height. Please refer to the table below.

For pilot and aircrew positions, height specifications vary by aircraft, and most applicants can successfully pursue a career in aviation with the U.S. Air Force. Applicants who are significantly taller or shorter than average may require special screening to ensure they can safely perform operational duties. Applicants of all heights are encouraged to apply.

Can I Still Be A Flight Attendant If Im Short

This is the dont give up hope part of the article.

Absolutely.

If you are far from the required height, I would recommend that you look for airlines with slightly lower reach test requirements.

For example, those that require 210cm arm reach with no height requirement.

They are out there and they do need flight attendants corporate aviation, charter companies, or smaller airlines, for example.

Or even big airlines that want to give equal opportunities to all candidates.

Look, if you arent that far from the required height for the airline that you want to join, Id encourage you to go there and try anyway.

Youve got nothing to lose, and you might be the right person at the right time.

If you dont have a go, youll never know if you could have made it.

But just a word of caution, think twice about it if you are going to travel from another country or city to attend an open day. This could cost a lot of money with nothing but disappoint as a result

Height And Weight Requirements

What Are the Army

Because height is rarely a bonafide occupational requirement for a job, height standards are flexible for both men and women. Greater emphasis is placed on overall health and fitness. Soldiers are expected to maintain their weight in proportion to height. The average woman in the U.S. is 54 and weighs 168 pounds, according to Medical News Today, so most 54 recruits do not have a problem with the 151-pound weight limit.

Recruits who need to slim down to meet height and weight requirements are encouraged to follow a sensible diet and step up their exercise regimen. Daily push-ups, sit-ups and 2-mile runs can build muscle, increase endurance and help with weight reduction. Crash diets are not advised.

Do Fighter Pilots Stick To Their Planes

No, the names that are printed on the side of a plane are purely symbolic and for public relation purposes.

Its more of a Hollywood trademark to put each pilot in their own plane.

There are always few available jets on the ground, and depending on the task at hand a pilot will be put on a mission with the assigned plane.

This is another reason why standardization between fighter jets is important. The options to change your seat are limited, so the pilots need to be equally sized.

If you dont fit in the height regulations for becoming a pilot, you can always consider joining some other forces like the Navy, Army, or Marines.

How To Lose Weight Before Meps

It happens to the best of us. We get lazy and quit watching what we eat, or we become stressed and lose the time or motivation to exercise. However, if you have plans to join the United States Armed Forces, then those bad habits will only bring you grief.

I’m speaking from experience. I dropped thirty pounds in a few months for the Air Force, and I am still struggling to stay at weight while I’m in the delayed enlistment program.

If you are truly committed to joining a branch of the military, then from experience, I suggest that you lose the weight the right way. Otherwise if you cheat your way , it will only cause you more headaches while you wait to ship out to basic training.

So here I will explain how to lose the weight correctly. However, I will also talk about a few ways to drop a few pounds too quickly, because chances are if you are going to do that, then you’ve already made you mind up about it. The least I can do is to help you do it the healthiest way possible so that you do not cause yourself long-term bodily harm.

Recreational Sports Leagues

The Army has several sports leagues to participate in, from football, basketball, and golf, to bowling, fishing, and more.

Outdoor Activities on Post

Besides running and biking trails, your post may have parks, pools, lakes, hiking trails, and other fun activities to maintain good health and wellbeing.

Its one of the first rounds performed at a cabin crew assessment day or interview, normally after the presentation.

At this first stage, they will confirm your height by measuring you, confirming your arm-reach, or both.

Its eliminatory, so candidates that cannot reach the minimum height are usually disqualified if they fail.

Tattoos Brands And Piercings

Airmen are subject to strict requirements and restrictions pertaining to body modifications. If you plan to get a tattoo or other body modifications, carefully consider placement, size and content before you proceed.

Tattoos, brands or piercings anywhere on the body that are prejudicial to good order and discipline, or of a nature that may bring discredit upon the Air Force, are prohibited both in and out of uniform. This includes modifications that are obscene or advocate sexual, racial, ethnic or religious discrimination. Even if rectified, excessive scarring resulting from tattoo removal may also be disqualifying.

Tattoos are not completely disqualifying, however. There are no size or area limitations for authorized tattoos on the chest , back, arms, and legs. Tattoos, brands, and body markings are prohibited on the head, neck, face, tongue, lips, and scalp. Hand tattoos are limited to one single-band ring tattoo, on one finger, on one hand.

How Tall Do I Need To Be To Become A Flight Attendant

As a flight attendant, Im often asked about the airline industrys requirements with regard to the height of cabin crew. This is often an overlooked aspect of our career, so it will be helpful if I cover it in some detail for you.

In this article, Ill explain what a height test involves and Ill also give you a few simple tips about the process. I have also provided a handy list of height requirements for most of the international airlines.

The height requirements for flight attendants differs slightly across airlines, but the average is a minimum of 159cm without shoes. Some airlines do an arm-reach test in which an average reach of 212 cm is required.

As I said, Ive compiled a list where youll find the main airlines height requirements, but you can also find this information in the airlines job posting site.

What Is The Height Limit For A Pilot

The height restrictions to be a pilot vary depending on a few factors, first of all if the piloting career you seek is for commercial flying or military flying.

Commercial piloting has fewer restrictions and every airline has their own restrictions on height.

Military piloting is more picky, however they now accept applicants that are below 5ft4inches or are above 6ft5inches.

You may still be able to fly in the air force even if your height is above or below these restrictions with a waiver process.

Commercial airliners are a lot more accepting of the different heights, and therefore you may be able to become a pilot for a commercial airliner at almost any height, depending on the airline and your height.

There are special seats to help accommodate those who may be shorter than average. The main factor taken into consideration by these airlines is that they must be able to reach the controls properly.

Being too tall is more problematic, as shorter people can have a special seat or an added pillow, whereas taller people cannot shrink, therefore taller pilots may have to look into flying larger planes with bigger cockpits in order to be comfortable flying.

How Tall To Join The Marines

Requirements To Join The Army: Do You Have What It Takes?

To become a marine, you need to be between 4 8 and 6 10 tall for both men and women.

But keep in mind that this chart is only informative. Marines pay more attention to body fat and weight, rather than height.

They are measured semi-annually to make sure they dont exceed the body fat allowance.

If they are taller than the chart allows or heavier, they are not immediately disqualified as long as their body fat is not over the limit.

Male Marines must be within the 18-21% body fat range, depending on age, and female Marines must be within the 26-29% body fat range.

If their body fat does go over the limit, then they are obligated to attend a Body Composition Program to lower the fat percentage.

What Are The Height Requirements To Be An Airline Pilot

There is no height requirement to become an airline pilot, though specific airlines may have their own polices.

According to the FAA Aviation Medical Examiners Guide, Although there are no medical standards for height, exceptionally short individuals may not be able to effectively reach all flight controls and must fly specially modified aircraft. If required, the FAA will place operational limitations on the pilot certificate.

If you want to become an airline pilot, it is unlikely that you will run into any issues. Commercial airliners have seats that are highly adjustable, and are able to accommodate both shorter and taller individuals just fine.

The biggest issue an aspiring pilot might have is actually during flight training.

Shorter individuals can usually get away with using a seat extender and cushion to see well over the cockpit and reach all flight controls. In some aircraft, the rudder pedals are also adjustable.

Taller individuals, on the other hand, might run into some issues.

If someone is too tall to comfortably sit in the cockpit of the planes the flight school uses, they will have to find a flight school that uses planes that can better accommodate them.

Army Recruiting Advice On Preparing To Meet Physical Standards

The Army has some standard advice for anyone considering a career as a soldier. Good body composition, the Army official site reminds, is best gained through proper diet and exercise. Examples of poor body composition are underdeveloped muscle groups, or excessive body fat. What should a potential recruit do to prepare for the measurements and weigh-ins they will be required to perform at the recruit level?

The Army philosophy in this area includes the idea that poor body composition, has a negative effect on appearance, self-esteem, and negatively influences attitude and morale and Army recruiting literature encourages applicants to get involved in a fitness program that incorporates running, swimming, and cycling.

Consult a physician before starting any new fitness regimen, especially a rigorous one. Do not rely on fad diets, exercise programs that start only weeks before your weigh-in date, etc.

Your recruiter will have advice for you on what kinds of fitness programs will best prepare you for basic training, but you may need to use a modified version of such a program if you are struggling to meet the physical standards mentioned above.

When Do I Sign Up For Airborne School

A recruit signs up for Airborne School at MEPSMilitary Entrance Processing Stationswhich officially marks day zero for the soldier-to-be.

MEPS is also where a recruit signs a contract, partakes in medical examinations , takes a drug test, takes the ASVAB, and swears in front of the American flag to support and defend the Constitution of the United States from all enemies, foreign and domestic.

In short, MEPS is one of the longest and most boring days a recruit will endure.

However, a recruit should do his or her best to cherish it, as it is one of the last days a recruit will enjoy civilian clothes and the freedom to slouch for at least a few months.

If youre attending Airborne School, you should consider the following packing list:

  • Your own blankets and pillows
  • Canteen
  • Extension cord and power strip
  • Wet wipes
  • Headphones
  • Playstation or other game consoles

Everything else that you absolutely need will be provided to you, but some other items to consider.

Do Fighter Pilots Get Shorter When Catapulted

In case of emergency seat ejection, the pilot momentarily loses one inch in total height. This is caused by extreme G-force pressure on the spine, causing it to shrink a bit.

Seats in jet planes are not designed for comfort, rather for the safety of the pilot. The ejection is the last effort to stay alive, so its not used commonly and the risk for spine injuries is lowered with new and improved seats.

But injuries to the spine can be severe and almost 50% of pilots that eject never fly again.

The ejection is also considered a penalty for the pilot, and they are not allowed to exceed three ejections.

Becoming A Us Army Paratrooper

When I landed my first airborne jump, I realized with pride that I was well on my to becoming a US Army Paratrooper.

During Week three/Phase three, I would go on to jump four more times, thankfully not having to suffer the terror of once again being the first man out the door.

I dont think I ever did a correct PLF, but I did get dragged across the ground when my parachute decided that it wasnt finished catching a little wind, I got a mouth full of Georgia red clay when I came up with my own PLF routine: Balls of your feet! Knees! Face!

Still, at the end of the week, we marched to a parade field for our graduation ceremony, a little bruised up, but happily wearing our matte black jump wings pinned to our uniform.

But not everyone would make it. Jumping out of planes doesnt come without a certain degree of risk.

On our fourth jump, a good friend of mine from basic training landed in a sitting down position, shattering his tailbone.

He wasnt allowed to recycle into another class, nor graduate with ours though he was only one jump short, and before I knew it he received orders for a regular infantry unit at Fort Worth, Texas.
