Height And Weight Requirements

Because height is rarely a bonafide occupational requirement for a job, height standards are flexible for both men and women. Greater emphasis is placed on overall health and fitness. Soldiers are expected to maintain their weight in proportion to height. The average woman in the U.S. is 54 and weighs 168 pounds, according to Medical News Today, so most 54 recruits do not have a problem with the 151-pound weight limit.

Recruits who need to slim down to meet height and weight requirements are encouraged to follow a sensible diet and step up their exercise regimen. Daily push-ups, sit-ups and 2-mile runs can build muscle, increase endurance and help with weight reduction. Crash diets are not advised.

Undergo A Health Screening

Candidates who pass the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test go to a Military Entrance Processing Station for health screening. Pilots need normal color vision, and they must meet eyesight refraction and astigmatism requirements. Distant vision must be at least 20/70 uncorrected, and near vision must be 20/30 uncorrected, but both distant and near vision must be corrected to 20/20. Corrective eye surgery could disqualify a candidate from flying. Pilots also cannot have a history of hay fever, asthma or allergies after age 12.

Us Army Height & Weight Requirements For Current Soldiers

Why do we include height and weight guidelines for currently serving troops in an article discussing enlistment standards? Because as mentioned above, it wont be long before the recruit is tested again for body composition after going on active duty. These issues are a career-long concern for all soldiers.

Previous iterations of AR-900 have included statements directed at currently serving soldiers that most today would consider to be derogatory. The 1986 version goes so far as to state, Excessive body fat connotes a lack of personal discipline, detracts from military appearance, may indicate a poor state of health, physical fitness, or stamina .

The above statement from the 1986 edition doesnt take into account medical issues or other factors that may inform the diagnosis of an individual person as overweight.

Language in the 2019 revision of AR-900 takes a far more nuanced approach, stating, Soldiers are subject to many demands and challenges that may impact individual readiness. The Army Body Composition Program provides commanders a systematic approach to enforce military standards across the unit while offering troops with the resources they need to return to an optimum level of individual readiness.

The U.S. Army has the following requirements for height and weight for those currently serving:

Any soldier failing to meet body fat standards after six months from date of entry to active service will be entered in the ABCP.

Us Army Female Height And Weight Standards

Below you will find the United States Army has height and weight maximum and minimum requirements to join the Army for female applicants. Army height and weight requirements for women vary by age, so it is important to know the category you fall under.

Height and weight measurements are recorded at a Military Entrance Processing Station and are taken using inches and pounds. This is the height and weight chart army females:

* Note: Weight by years of age for females

All US Army soldiers are weighed twice a year to ensure that they meet the weight standards set by the Army. Already enlisted Army soldiers who are above standards will be admitted into the Weight Management Program, which requires soldiers to lose a certain amount of weight in a monthly time period. Soldiers who fall below the set minimum weight standards will be sent for medical evaluation.

How The U.S. Military Plans To Replace The Iconic Humvee On Future Frontlines

Weight limits in the Army are there to ensure that everyone is as physically fit as can be. With over 250,000 people to keep track of, ensuring that everyone is of a healthy weight is a good indicator of someones overall health. Given that most Army jobs require lots of strength and mobility within confined spaces such as within an aircraft or tank, being overweight will simply prevent someone from doing their job. Moreover, Infantry positions require someone to carry heavy backpacks, which can damage someones bones if theyre overweight. Finally, the Army likes to simplify things such as with equipment and uniforms. Ensuring that everyone is within the same percentile of weight range allows for this simplicity to continue.

Dont Disregard This Advice

This is not advice that should be disregarded. This is vitally important for career pilots.

If youre a 220+ pounder and a flight school trying to sign you up tells you not to worry about it, they are lying to you to get your business as they may have done to the 220 pounder who flew with me. Sure, they may be able to squeeze you and a tiny CFI on board an R22 for flight training. Or maybe theyll convince you that youll be better off training in an R44, which costs about twice as much per hour to fly. But youll still find it impossible to get a job as a CFI when your ratings are in hand. And unless you plan to pay to build your first 1,000 hours, youll need that CFI job to move forward in your career.

It should go without saying that even if you start on the slim side, its important to stay that way at least until youve reached a point in your career where your personal body weight doesnt matter as much.

For example, I have two not-so-slim friends who are well along in their pilot careers. Both are utility pilots one flies medium twins like Hueys and Bell 212s and the other flies Sky Cranes. Both of these guys are between 200 and 240 pounds. But they werent always that big. Pounds are often added with years.

Yet another friend of mine was a medevac pilot who allowed his weight to creep up over time. When his company started closing bases, he was one of the first pilots to go. Coincidence? I dont think so. At the time, he probably weighed about 250.

How To Train For Air Force Basic Training

One way to drop some weight in preparation for Air Force basic training is to start training for the program’s physical requirements while focusing on a healthy diet, says Stew Smith, a fitness expert. By eating healthy foods while increasing the amount you move, you might drop some weight without any extra measures.

As always, consider consulting a doctor before starting any new fitness regime.

Smith recommends starting a physical fitness training program at least six weeks before basic training, or more if you are trying to lose weight. He recommends training at least three to five times a week, while adding in plenty of stretching to keep yourself healthy and injury-free.

Surprising Medical Conditions That Will Disqualify You From Military Service

DE& S and British Army launch the Army Warfighting ...

A medical waiver may be in the cards.

BySarah Sicard | Updated Jul 19, 2021 3:31 PM

In order to join the military, you need to qualify medically. And while there are some obvious stipulations, like the fact that you cant be carrying diseases that will endanger your platoon, there are other disqualifying conditions that might surprise you.

All the disqualifying diseases, disorders, and conditions adopted by the U.S. military are listed within the International Classification of Disease code, under the United Nations World Health Organization.

Task & Purpose reached out to Lt. Michele Stein, a Navy recruiter, who shared some lesser-known medical conditions, and in some cases, ways you can get around them. In addition, Stein also asked around her station in Tucson, Arizona, for crazy, surprising medical disqualification stories. We compiled our favorites, and here are six unusual conditions that can keep you from joining the military.

Your Testicles Have To Be Normal

You have to have normal genitalia to be in the military. According to the Tucson recruiting office, one man who was trying to join couldnt because his testicles were too big. As a result, he was permanently disqualified. However, thats not the only concern. The absence of one or both testicles, whether congenital, acquired, or unexplained absence of a testicle is also unacceptable according to military standards.

You Cant Have Flat Feet

Though this is one of the most widely argued-about conditions that can bar you from the military, the answer is yes it is real. While someone who has flat feet can serve in the military, it depends on the severity. If someone has symptomatic flat feet, which indicates that the condition causes the person chronic physical pain, then he or she cannot serve.

Height Exemption For Growing Recruits

As we noted earlier, there are some exemptions to the physical requirements to enter the military. This is tied to the age of the applicant since some 17-year-olds can enlist with their parents approval.

Underage applicants that pass the entry process cannot be disqualified for growing beyond the required height range. However, your height can limit jobs that have height restrictions.

There are several notable cases of military youth growth exemptions, for example, basketball star David Robinson who in his first four years of service exceeded 80 inches in height. While playing professional basketball, he continued on active duty and later served in the Naval Reserve!

These include taking the ASVAB, having a physical exam, meeting with a career counselor, and if youre accepted, taking the oath of enlistment. From there youll receive orders for basic training, usually to start within a few weeks. If you enrolled in a delayed entry program, youll go home and get orders for basic training within a year.

Height And Weight Standards For The United States Navy

All officer and enlisted non-prior service and prior service applicants for the Reserve and Active Duty components of the United States Navy must meet the weight according to their corresponding height to be eligible for commissioning, enlistment, or affiliation . If unable to meet the height and weight per the chart, then an abdominal circumference measurement must be taken.

To qualify based on the abdominal circumference measurement , it must be equal to or less than the maximum allowed For both men and women, the ACM will be taken on bare skin, starting immediately above the upper most hip bone vertically in-line with the right arm pit. Work the tape around the body parallel with the floor. Take the measurement with the arms down to the sides at the end of a normal, relaxed exhalation.

If one fails to meet the abdominal circumference measurement, the minimum body fat measurement must be met. The maximum body fat percentage allowed for all Navy applicants and Sailors is 26 percent for males and 36 percent for females. For the procedure on how to properly measure body fat, proceed to the appropriate body fat page:

Are There Any Growth Allowances Given

Given that you cant control your height and that someone can be recruited into the Army as early as 17 years old, there have been some cases of people being allowed to stay in the military despite exceeding the height requirements.

For example, the famous basketball player and 2-time Olympic gold medal winner David Robinson first entered the US Navy when he was 80 inches tall, just one inch over the Navys height restriction at that time of 80 inches. However, he was granted an allowance due to the assumption that he wouldnt grow much more. That turned out to be a huge miscalculation as Robinson ended up growing to around 85 inches tall, meaning he well-exceeded the height standard. Rather than being discharged, he was able to serve active duty while growing his basketball career and later served in the Naval Reserves helping with recruitment and campaigning.

While Robinson still had some active part in the Navy, his height prevented him from later serving on any US navy ships. Better yet, this is unlikely to happen nowadays, and there are not many known cases of exceptions being given to the height restrictions. Height limits, therefore, are something to be aware of when planning on joining the US military.

How Is Body Fat Percentage Measured To Enlist In The Military

How to Use Your Military EOD Background in the Civilian ...

Body fat percentage is estimated from a series of tape measurements around the neck and belly button. This estimate is not made routinely by MEPS officials, only to applicants who exceed the weight standards.

The percentage of fat admitted varies with age and between branches of the Armed Forces. Importantly, there are no exemptions for exceeding the body fat percentage limits. That means that if your body fat percentage exceeds that number, you wont be recruited regardless of the rest of your test results.

These are the body fat limits in each branch, for men and women :

  • Army: 24% and 30%,
  • Air Force: 20% and 28%,
  • Navy: 23% and 34%
