Why Does The Military Have Enlistment Age Limits

The minimum and maximum age limits for potential enlistees ensure they have had the opportunity to meet their minimal education requirements and are in good physical condition. The goal is to recruit educated, able-bodied enlistees, minimize the risk of injury and reduce their recovery time if injured.

Federal law has established the maximum military recruitment age limit to be age 42, although each service branch has the flexibility to establish its own limits below that age. For almost all male U.S. citizens ages 18-25 living in the United States, there is a requirement to register with the Selective Service System.

Age Requirements Are Supplemented By Education Requirements

In most cases, the minimum age a new recruit may enter military service is 17 . However, a high school diploma or GED is usually required. Some branches of service may, depending on recruiting issues at any given time, offer alternatives such as allowing a new recruit who has a GED with college credits. Having a GED may subject the enlistee to additional standards not applied to those who have high school diplomas.

If the applicant does not meet the stricter standards for GED holders without college coursework, it may be possible to enroll in college to earn additional credit hours. This may be required by the branch of service applied for so you will need to try again under different standards.

Can I Become A Navy Seal At Age 34

Navy SEAL recruits must be between the ages of 17 to 28 years old. There are some waivers for men ages 29 and 30 that are available for very qualified candidates. There is also another exception with prior enlisted servicemen who seek to enter the SEAL community as an Officer can request waivers to the age of 33.

Raising The Age Of Military Enlistment

The following is the introduction for the book Only the Young Shall Die by Peter Polack and Jack McCain.

As counter-intuitive as it would appear, the average age of young men dying in combat has decreased substantially from the mid-twenties of earlier wars to the late teens. One estimate puts the average age of Union soldiers during the American Civil War at just under twenty-six years old. A report on enlisted men from North-West England in the Great War puts the average age of dead soldiers at twenty-seven years old but more nineteen year olds died than any other age group. By World War II the average age of the US fighting man was still twenty-six years.

In the Vietnam War the average age of soldiers killed in action had declined to 23 years and twenty percent of those killed were less than twenty years old. Whilst it is tempting to be distracted by the use of the term average which ultimately benefits future recruiters, the simple fact is that sixty-one percent of those killed were under the allowable age for drinking in the USA, twenty-one years old.

A snapshot of this evolving paradigm came on 10 July 2009 when five UK servicemen with an average age of twenty years were killed in the very dangerous Helmand province of Afghanistan. Three of the dead soldiers were only eighteen.

Perhaps the best conclusion was given by President Franklin D. Roosevelt who pronounced this verdict from a familiar seat to some returning veterans, his wheelchair:

Logically The Branches That Are The Most Physically Demanding Have Lower Enlistment Age Limits

Special Operations branches have stricter age limits for the same reason. Still, if a 38-year-old wants to give back to his country through military service, its now well within his reach to do so. In some cases, you can be well into your 40s and still serve- if you have what the military needs, that is. Age waivers are occasionally offered if you have critical skills or experience thats in short supply, but the commanding officer or community manager will have to approve it. Medical and legal professionals, plus religious officials, are the most likely to get approval.

If You Havent Earned Your Diploma Yet And Want To Join The Military Out Of High School

Too Old to Join the MILITARY??

Any recruiter will urge a potential new recruit to complete high school first before trying to enter the military. That said, military recruiting involves something known as the Delayed Enlistment program where those who are not technically eligible to serve yet due to age or school status may enter into a provisional agreement with the service they wish to join.

Delayed Enlistment may put the enlistee into a program to familiarize them with military life, procedures, what to expect in basic training, etc. It can be a big help to those who want to serve, but are not yet eligible to become full-fledged military recruits.

Benefits Of Joining The Military At 25

How old is too old to join the military?

There are solid reasons to consider joining at 25 or even later.

1. You Have Time to Earn College Credits or a Degree

You will find added benefits after joining the military at 25 with some college credits or a degree.

First, military service means you have college loan repayment benefits to look forward to.

Also, your added degree or credits mean that you earn an advanced rank upon enlistment when you join.

This added rank also means increased pay.

If you have your hopes on officer training instead of joining as an enlisted member, your college degree is a fast-track to those goals.

If your degree is in the health industry, talk to a recruiter because some fields have added enlistment bonuses or extra loan repayment benefits.

Lastly, some military careers require some college credit or a degree for consideration.

So planning on joining the military at 25 is a long-game career planning move that often pays off.

This is especially true when you factor in the longevity of your career for retirement and future civilian opportunities.

Self-discipline often comes with time and age.

Also, military discipline is something entirely unique and different.

Military discipline relies on an entire unit being efficient and performative in a conflict.

When you serve in any branch, the units needs are far superior to an individual soldiers wants and desires.

Therefore, as some people leave adolescents, the ability to buckle down and embrace this way of thinking becomes easier.

What Is The Maximum Age Limit For Each Branch Of The Military

It truly depends on whether or not you are a non-prior or prior service member, looking at enlisting into the active duty or reserve components, etc. In the United States military system, you may enlist into any branch at the age of 17 years old with parental consent, or 18 years old without parental consent.

Military Age Restrictions By Branch

At age 66, Broun still serves as a doctor in the Navy Reserve. In an interview with Army Times, he called the enlistment age cap an arbitrary policy.

There are people who want to serve and are physically fit, he said. There are some 20-year-olds who cannot run a mile.

Since Brouns attempt in 2012, the military policy on age restrictions has changed. The Air Force, for example, raised its maximum age. See the age requirements for Active Duty enlistees of each branch below:

  • Army: 17-35 years old
  • Navy: 17-34 years old
  • Air Force: 17-39 years old
  • Coast Guard: 17-27 years old

In general, the Defense Department restricts enlistment to those 35 and younger. Prior enlisted service members can subtract their previous years of service from their age in order to extend eligibility. For example, the current age cutoff in the Air Force is 39. This means that a 31-year-old veteran with four years of prior service experience would still be eligible to reenlist.

Rep. Susan Davis of the Armed Services Committee personnel panel has said the risks outnumbered gains when it came to enlisting older personnel. She said they are not only more likely to become injured, but also take more time to recover than their younger counterparts.

Not All Branches Are The Same

When it comes to basic requirements, not all branches of the military are the same. The Air Force typically closes the door to recruits at age 39 The Marines close it at 28, and both the Army and Navy limit the maximum age to 34. The Coast Guard has both doors open to applicants as old as 39, according to Military.com. All the Coast Guard asks is that you score at least 45 on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test, have no more than two dependents and be willing to serve on or around the water.
