Can I join the Army? – Army Jobs

Any recruiter will urge a potential new recruit to complete high school first before trying to enter the military. That said, military recruiting involves something known as the Delayed Enlistment program where those who are not technically eligible to serve yet due to age or school status may enter into a provisional agreement with the service they wish to join.

Delayed Enlistment may put the enlistee into a program to familiarize them with military life, procedures, what to expect in basic training, etc. It can be a big help to those who want to serve, but are not yet eligible to become full-fledged military recruits.

Does Everyone Serve In Active Duty

Its expected that all men of good physical health serve in active duty, however, it is possible to complete military service outside of active duty, such as with police duties.

Also, those who are not in good health are allowed to complete their military service through non-active duty. This could be through social work or other services for the government.

Lastly, those with debilitating diseases, such as diabetes or other conditions, can be exempted from military service altogether. Similar exemptions can also be granted to those with exceptional skills.

For example, some violinists, pianists, and ballet performers can get exemptions from duty. Also, athletes who have won medals in the Olympics, or specifically a gold medal in the Asian Games, are exempted from active duty.

These individuals will instead complete the 4 weeks of basic military training, then they can continue their careers so long as they do so for 42 months. Once this period has finished, theyll attend a few days of military training every year for the next six years, but thats the extent of their service.

Son Heung Min, who plays for Tottenham Spurs, received an exemption from active duty in 2018, after South Korea won gold in the Asian Games for football.

However, from that moment they will be regarded fully as foreigners by the Korean government. So many Koreans living abroad choose to keep their citizenship and return to Korea at some point in their 20s to complete their military service.

Raising The Age Of Military Enlistment

Is 25 Too Old to Join the Army?

The following is the introduction for the book Only the Young Shall Die by Peter Polack and Jack McCain.

As counter-intuitive as it would appear, the average age of young men dying in combat has decreased substantially from the mid-twenties of earlier wars to the late teens. One estimate puts the average age of Union soldiers during the American Civil War at just under twenty-six years old. A report on enlisted men from North-West England in the Great War puts the average age of dead soldiers at twenty-seven years old but more nineteen year olds died than any other age group. By World War II the average age of the US fighting man was still twenty-six years.

In the Vietnam War the average age of soldiers killed in action had declined to 23 years and twenty percent of those killed were less than twenty years old. Whilst it is tempting to be distracted by the use of the term average which ultimately benefits future recruiters, the simple fact is that sixty-one percent of those killed were under the allowable age for drinking in the USA, twenty-one years old.

A snapshot of this evolving paradigm came on 10 July 2009 when five UK servicemen with an average age of twenty years were killed in the very dangerous Helmand province of Afghanistan. Three of the dead soldiers were only eighteen.

Perhaps the best conclusion was given by President Franklin D. Roosevelt who pronounced this verdict from a familiar seat to some returning veterans, his wheelchair:

How Old Can You Be To Join The Army

One would think that any aged person could enlist in the U.S. Army. But, the Army has minimums and maximums. Federal law dictates that you have to be at least 17 to join, and that is with parental consent. Otherwise, you have to be 18 years old. As of 2019, the maximum age for enlisting in the Military is 39, though the Army has set its own lower age limit. Or, as the Army puts it, you must not have reached your 35th birthday before the time of accession.

However, if you have prior military service, you can be older. To determine how old, just subtract your total active duty time from your age. If this number is less than 35, you meet the age eligibility requirements for active duty. For the Army Reserve you must be able to retire with 20 years of federal service before the age of 60.

And, if you want to enter one of these Army programs, you can be older than 35:

Army JAG:Applicants must be able to serve 20 years of active commissioned service before reaching the age of 62. Applicants must be under the age of 42 at the time of entry into active duty service.

Army Chaplin:Must be at least 21 years of age, but younger than 42 at time of Regular Army commissioning or less than 45 at time of Army Reserve commissioning. Prior service applicants with at least 3 years of prior AFS or creditable USAR service must be younger than 47 at time of Army Reserve commissioning.

3-3. AgeApplicant is eligible for enlistment if any of the following apply:

Where Does Basic Training Take Place

Reserve units will conduct their Basic Training either at the local reserve unit location or at a Canadian Armed Forces training centre. Locations vary depending on units. Talk to a Primary Reserve unit recruiter for more information on their Basic Training program.

Air Force Raises Enlistee Age Limit From 27 To 39

WASHINGTON Thanks to a new Air Force policy announced Tuesday, enlisted recruits can now experience the joys of basic training in their late 30s.

The Air Force raised the maximum age for enlisted accession from 27 to 39, meaning it may now be the best choice for those who feel the call to military service later in life.

The maximum age for Army enlisted recruits is 35, while the Navy and Marines cap recruit ages at 34 and 28, respectively.

Under federal law, the oldest recruit any military branch can enlist is 42, although each service sets its own policy within that limit.

Annette Crawford, a spokeswoman for the Air Force Recruiting Service at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas, said officials would be watching to see whether the aches and pains of approaching middle age are too much for older recruits.

With the change, if we see a higher initial training attrition or increased physical injuries the Air Force recruiting commander can set a more restrictive age if necessary, she said.

The increased maximum age is for all Air Force enlisted occupations rather than being targeted at increasing accessions in certain areas, she said.

The new policy comes at a time of a declining defense budget, a shrinking military and falling recruiting goals, however. From 2009 to 2013, the number of recruits dropped from nearly 32,000 to just over 26,000. While recruiting goals for 2014 are still being finalized, theyre likely to fall again.

How Do I Apply For An Army Waiver

How Old Is Too Old To Join The Military?!?

Applying for an Army waiver is as simple as requesting a form. However, it should be noted that the point of the waiver is for the applicant to prove they overcame a disqualifying issue that would otherwise prevent them from joining the Army. Once the waiver has been submitted, a comprehensive review will take place and it will be determined if the individual can join.

The Militia And Junior Reserves

As the war dragged on, casualties in the South forced the Confederate Army to begin insisting that 17 year old boys join the militia or junior reserve. Governor Joseph E. Brown of Georgia reported to the General Assembly that in his state the militia was conscripting boys as young as 16. The militia, which also accepted men in their 50s and 60s, was the last line of defense, protecting cities from invasion. The most famous example was the assault on Petersburg, Virginia. Union Maj. Gen. Benjamin F. Butler, who was charged with disruption of the rail lines that converged in Petersburg, was met there by 2,200 Confederate militia defenders whom he characterized as “gray-haired men and beardless boys.” The militia slowed the Union advance until Confederate regulars could be mobilize to reinforce them.

Here are a few of the questions I have received recently about basic training. Even if you aren’t over 30, read the answers carefully. I always like to say every five minutes of reading you do on basic training before you leave will reduce your amount of push-ups by 5%. If you have any questions you would like me to address, please go to www.ultimatebasictraining.com and email me.

Question from Cheryl:

SGT Volkin, I am joining the military at 34 years old. I used to run a lot but after having a couple kids and taking a few years off of exercising, I am not sure I can keep up with the 18-23 age group anymore. What can I do?

Answer: Actually, basic training isn’t about competing with other recruits it’s about meeting military standards and exceeding your expectations. In my book, there is an eight-week fitness guide that walks you through, day by day, specific basic training workouts. Follow that guide, and you will far exceed any military standard.

Update: This letter writer emailed me back after she completed the workout described in my book. She claims she is doing one-arm push-ups now for the first time ever! She also reported she just ran her fastest two-mile run in her life after only eight weeks of training.

Question from Paul:

I am 40 years old and want to serve my country with the new military age limit, I now have my chance. Will the younger recruits be looking to me for guidance simply because of my age?

In 2012, U.S. Rep. Paul Broun Jr. , tried to push through legislation that would allow people of any age to join the military as long as they could meet the minimum health and fitness requirements. The House voted 256-164 against the military age restrictions measure.

Broun introduced the bill after speaking with an unnamed ultra-marathon runner who was denied enlistment in the Army for being a few months over the maximum age. He was also petitioning on behalf of his Congressional colleague and fellow Georgia Rep. Phil Gingrey, who tried to volunteer as a military doctor and was rejected despite his experience as an obstetrician. Gingrey will turn 70 in July.
