Is 25 A Good Age To Join The Military
Twenty-five is still at a good age to join the military. You have the maturity and physical capability to navigate the militarys requirements. However, you may be older than other recruits and may have had to leave a family or loved ones behind.
Here are some of the benefits of joining the military at 25:
- Maturity. You probably have experience working or studying at 25, which will give you maturity and experience that impact the way you train and make decisions.
- Qualifications. At 25, you have had the chance to earn a college degree and get a few years of professional experience. Depending on your degree, you may also be able to climb the military ranks faster.
What Is The Issue
Since the UN treaty on the involvement of children in armed conflict came into force in 2002, ratifying States are not allowed to send recruits under the age of 18 to war. But some countries, including high-income ones, continue to enlist under-18s for military training before they can be deployed, which carries its own risks to childrens rights and welfare. Three-quarters of States worldwide no longer enlist under-18s into their armed forces, but among those that still do is the United Kingdom, on which our research to-date has focused.
The UK is one of only 16 countries worldwide to recruit from age 16 and the only country in Europe and the only NATO member to recruit from this age. Under-18s make up a quarter of new British army recruits, the majority of them aged 16. Several other high-income countries – including France, Germany, the USA and Canada – enlist children from age 17, but they make up a much smaller proportion of the intake. There are, of course, striking differences between the recruitment of under-18s by armed forces in these countries and the exploitation of children by armed forces and groups in global conflict situations, but worldwide efforts to stop child recruitment are undermined when the worlds most powerful States refuse to recognise that enlisting children into the military is not in their best interests.
Ged Holders Must Score Higher On The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery
Those who do not have a high school diploma will be required to score higher on the ASVAB test, regardless of the branch of service desired.
Some potential new military members may find that the recruiter will upon learning of the GED status of an applicant wish to have the recruit take the ASVAB first. Those who do not score high enough are often encouraged to take a specified amount of college credits before retaking the ASVAB.
The reason for this is that those who have GEDs and college credits are put in the same ASVAB scoring category as someone with a high school diploma. The high school graduates do not get more stringent ASVAB scoring requirements.

Logically The Branches That Are The Most Physically Demanding Have Lower Enlistment Age Limits
Special Operations branches have stricter age limits for the same reason. Still, if a 38-year-old wants to give back to his country through military service, its now well within his reach to do so. In some cases, you can be well into your 40s and still serve- if you have what the military needs, that is. Age waivers are occasionally offered if you have critical skills or experience thats in short supply, but the commanding officer or community manager will have to approve it. Medical and legal professionals, plus religious officials, are the most likely to get approval.
How Long Will I Be Away From Home
Sailors rotate between sea and shore duty. You may spend three years assigned to a ships command and then rotate to serve three more years at a shore command. You will not be at sea during your entire Navy career. During your sea tour, you may live off-base nearby, but must be available to travel with the ship for deployments or training.
A typical sea deployment on a Navy ship can last anywhere from six to nine months. Ships typically deploy once every 18-24 months. In preparation for deployment, Sailors should be prepared to go to sea for 10 to 14 days each month for training.

Raising The Age Of Military Enlistment
The following is the introduction for the book Only the Young Shall Die by Peter Polack and Jack McCain.
As counter-intuitive as it would appear, the average age of young men dying in combat has decreased substantially from the mid-twenties of earlier wars to the late teens. One estimate puts the average age of Union soldiers during the American Civil War at just under twenty-six years old. A report on enlisted men from North-West England in the Great War puts the average age of dead soldiers at twenty-seven years old but more nineteen year olds died than any other age group. By World War II the average age of the US fighting man was still twenty-six years.
In the Vietnam War the average age of soldiers killed in action had declined to 23 years and twenty percent of those killed were less than twenty years old. Whilst it is tempting to be distracted by the use of the term average which ultimately benefits future recruiters, the simple fact is that sixty-one percent of those killed were under the allowable age for drinking in the USA, twenty-one years old.
A snapshot of this evolving paradigm came on 10 July 2009 when five UK servicemen with an average age of twenty years were killed in the very dangerous Helmand province of Afghanistan. Three of the dead soldiers were only eighteen.
Perhaps the best conclusion was given by President Franklin D. Roosevelt who pronounced this verdict from a familiar seat to some returning veterans, his wheelchair:

Age Requirements Are Supplemented By Education Requirements
In most cases, the minimum age a new recruit may enter military service is 17. However, a high school diploma or GED is usually required. Some branches of service may, depending on recruiting issues at any given time, offer alternatives such as allowing a new recruit who has a GED with college credits. Having a GED may subject the enlistee to additional standards not applied to those who have high school diplomas.
If the applicant does not meet the stricter standards for GED holders without college coursework, it may be possible to enroll in college to earn additional credit hours.
All branches of service restrict how many new recruits may enter military service each year without a high school diploma. According to some reports, this is due to statistics which tend to indicate a higher number of unsuccessful basic trainees come from backgrounds that do not include a diploma.
Those who want to enter the military as quickly as possible should know that they may technically qualify to serve, but their status as without a high school diploma may push their application to the following year if the quota for non-diploma holders has already been met.

Why Does The Military Have Enlistment Age Limits
The minimum and maximum age limits for potential enlistees ensure they have had the opportunity to meet their minimal education requirements and are in good physical condition. The goal is to recruit educated, able-bodied enlistees, minimize the risk of injury and reduce their recovery time if injured.
Federal law has established the maximum military recruitment age limit to be age 42, although each service branch has the flexibility to establish its own limits below that age. For almost all male U.S. citizens ages 18-25 living in the United States, there is a requirement to register with the Selective Service System.

Average Age Of Us Military Members
When the U.S. fought its Civil War, the average age of the soldiers was just under 26 years old, Military Times says. It was roughly the same in WWII, but in the Vietnam War it was 23, with 61 percent under 21. Some boys in that war enlisted underage, sometimes as young as 16.
Since the Vietnam War, the trend has reversed somewhat, Pew Research says. The average age of U.S. military members is slightly over 27 for enlistees, while officers average 34.5 years of age. This is partly because the military has raised the age limits for joining over the years to attract more experienced, mature individuals. It’s possible that fewer younger Americans are signing up because tougher eligibility standards mean a lot of them don’t qualify. For example, if they have health issues, poor education or they fail the background check, they’re a no-go.
While the government doesn’t provide stats on the average age of a U.S. Army soldier at enlistment nor for Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, etc. they do post the age range allowed for enlistment online. The U.S. government says the minimum age for entering the military is 17 in every branch of the service. The upper limit on age varies by service branch:
- Air Force: 39
- Navy: 39
- Space Force: 39
