Which Military Branch Pays The Most

Basic military pay amounts are set by law and are the same for each branch of the military. Pay amounts are tied to paygrade. While the different services often customize the names of their ranks, all of those ranks are tied to that same paygrade chart.

Service members do, however, receive fluctuating pay based on their location, special skills, family size or risk associated with their job. For example, a deployed Special Forces soldier with a family stationed in a high cost-of-living area will bring home a lot more pay in the form of allowances and special pays than an unmarried soldier of the same rank with a desk job in Oklahoma. Both soldiers, however, will have the same base pay.

Electronic Access To Pay Information

MyPay, a web-based service of DFAS, provides up-to-date, round-the-clock pay information for military service members, DoD civilian employees, military retirees and annuitants. Accessed through a personal identification number, the MyPay site also may be used to make address changes, review W-2 forms, or adjust contributions to the military Thrift Savings Program.

Because the service members Leave and Earnings Statement can be viewed through this secure site, many military families find MyPay especially useful during deployments. Service members often provide their PIN information to the spouse who then can access the LES through MyPay. Spouses find they are better able to help manage the familys finances while the service member is away.

What percentage of your monthly pay do you need to contribute to your military Thrift Savings Plan with Blended Retirement System to max out in December 2022?

Here are the 2022 military TSP BRS matching contribution maximizing charts, based on the proposed 2.7% 2022 military pay raise and TSP contribution limit moving up to $20,500.

In order to maximize your 5% military TSP match, you must contribute at least 5% a month to the TSP and NOT max it out too early before December of the year. The easiest way to do this is to spread your contributions evenly over the 12 months of the year.

Available as a or or click the images for full screen image.

The military TSP matching through the Blended Retirement System is an excellent way for military servicemembers to build their retirement savings.

Thrift Savings Plan Deployment Contributions

US Military Pay Scale for all Branches of the US Military ...

A combat zone is an excellent time to dump money into your Thrift Savings Plan in order to maximize your retirement account. This is the only way you can invest with tax-free dollars, and NOT have to pay any taxes when you withdrawal the money either!

Contributions to the Roth section of your TSP are post-tax contributions, meaning they are not taxed when you withdrawal the funds. However, since you are exempt from paying taxes while deployed, EVERY DOLLAR you contribute to your Roth TSP account will be completely tax exempt.

Lets look at an example. A 30-year-old soldier, deployed to a tax-exempt income zone contributes $19,500 to her Roth TSP and $6,000 to her Roth IRA . If the service member lets this contribution stay in their TSP account as it grows for 30 years until they hit 60 years old, that will become quite a nest egg.

At a modest annual return of 7%, this soldier would have a balance in her TSP and Roth IRA of $148,439 dollars, all of which she could withdraw tax-free!

What Are Top 10 Highest Paying Cities For Military Nurse Jobs

Weve identified 10 cities where the typical salary for a Military Nurse job is above the national average. Topping the list is Santa Clara, CA, with San Francisco, CA and Fremont, CA close behind in the second and third positions. Fremont, CA beats the national average by $10,455 , and Santa Clara, CA furthers that trend with another $13,561 above the $64,622 average.

Importantly, Santa Clara, CA has a moderately active Military Nurse job market with only a few companies currently hiring for this type of role.

With these 10 cities having average salaries higher than the national average, the opportunities for economic advancement by changing locations as a Military Nurse appears to be exceedingly fruitful.

Finally, another factor to consider is the average salary for these top ten cities varies very little at 9% between Santa Clara, CA and Santa Maria, CA, reinforcing the limited potential for much wage advancement. The possibility of a lower cost of living may be the best factor to use when considering location and salary for a Military Nurse role.

Do You Want The Value Of Your Retirement Pay Reduced By Half

HOW MUCH DOES THE MILITARY MAKE IN 2021? | Benefits of Military Pay

Lets assume that the E7 dies around 30 years after retirement at the age of 70 with the VGLI still in force. The spouse, who is the same age, lives for another 18 years. The best case scenario here, with regards to ROI, is that a) the E7 dies, and b) the surviving spouse receives $400,000 from the VGLI death benefit, and $297,000 in TAXABLE SBP payouts .

Thats a gross ROI of $697,000 hundreds of thousands of dollars LESS than the true value of the E7 military retirement pay . And this is even before accounting for having to pay taxes on the SBP payouts. But wait, lets not forget to subtract the $180,000 the E7 and his spouse paid for this coverage. That brings their net ROI down to $517,000. Thats approximately half of what the E7s military retirement pay was worth adjusted for inflation over 30 years. And again, there is no legacy for any children when the E7s spouse passes away.

The Bottom Line: Its A Recruiting Tool

  • Think of it as a marketing stunt for both the NFL and military.

At the end of the day, its about recruiting. The military is giving sports leagues money to advertise. The military needs fresh recruits every year, and its putting money where the eyeballs are: sports. In 2016, more than 16 million people would watch the average NFL game. Thats a big audience. And a lot of those viewers are young and gauging their career interests a jackpot for military recruiters.

To be fair, the NFL did return some of the money it received from the military after the public learned what was going on. Its also not illegal or necessarily unethical for it to have received money in the first place. But you should know looks can be deceiving especially all of that camouflage.

Special And Incentive Pays

Special and Incentive pays are ways to earn over and above your basic rate or allowances, regardless of your time in the service or pay grade. They help the Department of Defense ensure that the right people are where they need to be to keep the country safe.

Some types of S& I pays include:

  • Hardship Duty Pay for service members assigned to places where the standard of living is significantly below that of the continental United States
  • Hostile Fire Pay/Imminent Danger Pay for those assigned to specific regions where they may be subject to hostile actions like enemy fire or mines
  • Assignment Incentive Pay for service members on extended tours or certain unusual assignments
  • Hazardous Duty Incentive Pay for those on specific types of flying duty such as parachute jumping, flight deck duty or experimental stress duty also known as flight pay for aircrew members

Your take-home pay will be impacted by automatic deductions for things like taxes and Thrift Savings Plan contributions. If youve got any questions about payments or deductions, a Military OneSource financial counselor is happy to walk you through your Leave and Earnings Statement at no cost.
