It should come as no surprise that the average bonus for a recruiter and a recruitment manager varies greatly depending on experience and area, as one would anticipate. Experienced recruiters may earn as much as $10,500 per year, according to the national average, compared to a recruitment managers bonus of $20,500 per year.

Joining the military opens a wide world of opportunities, but those first few years in the service can put your budget through some grueling tests. Pitfalls wait around every corner, and too many wrong moves could do irreparable damage to your financial future.

“Most new recruits are young, don’t have money to burn and have relatively little experience managing their own finances,” said Glenda Oakley, a USAA employee and former Army platoon leader. Oakley has seen their financial challenges firsthand, both on base and through 15 months in Iraq. “I tried to help my soldiers understand that the decisions they make now will stay with them their entire lives.”

Oakley and USAA certified financial planner J.J. Montanaro identify 10 money missteps that all new recruits and junior enlisted personnel should try to avoid.

1. Failing to budget

“It’s critical to live within your means,” Montanaro said. “That requires sitting down and separating the things you want from the things you really need.”

Oakley suggests setting aside a reasonable amount of “play money” at the start of every month, and using it to pay for nonessentials like entertainment or eating out. There’s only one rule: “When it’s gone, it’s gone,” she said.

Another important budgeting decision relates to where you live. Many junior enlisted want the freedom of living off-post, but it can be much more expensive than the low-cost housing and amenities available on base.

    Are you willing to kill another person if ordered to do so? Would you destroy peoples’ homes or food? Would you help others who are fighting, even if you’re not in combat?

    I am a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force. A few years ago I took part in a program known as Recruiter Assistant Program, or RAP, in which airmen are permitted to spend two weeks shadowing and assisting an Air Force recruiter of their choice. Most choose to shadow their own hometown recruiter, because since RAP doesnt charge against leave days, and since the work itself looks pretty cushy, it is a great way to spend some time with friends and family back home, free of consequences.

    When I took part, I chose to shadow my recruiter back home, who was not the same recruiter as the one who put me into the Air Force. She left for an assignment in Germany and another recruiter took her place in the states. I dont think I got the true recruitment experience when I originally joined. My recruiter didnt have to play games with me or bullshit me because I did all of my own research beforehand and made up my mind before speaking to a recruiter in the first place. I only needed her to put the papers in front of me to sign.

    The U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously this morning that the federal government can withhold federal funds from colleges that bar or restrict military recruiting on their campuses.

    In a 21-page opinion written by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., the court rejected arguments that colleges have a First Amendment right to exclude recruiters whose hiring practices conflict with their own antidiscrimination policies.

    The court’s ruling was a victory for the Department of Defense, which had argued that recruiting restrictions hamper its ability to bring talented lawyers into the Judge Advocate General’s Corps, which handles legal affairs for the military.

    These tips for visiting your military recruiter will give you talking points and goals as you get ready to join the military. By having no fear, taking a friend or family member with you, knowing the ASVAB, understanding where you want to be stationed, asking about special pays and by knowing your contract goals, start date and commitment length — and then getting it all in writing — youll be able to get the most of out of this recruiter meeting.

    1. Have no fear. Remember you are under no obligation when speaking to a recruiter. You may be asked to sign paperwork before taking the ASVAB and possibly at other steps in the process. This is standard procedure so don’t be alarmed. The enlistment process is involved and takes time you have the ability to change your mind at any time before you sign the final enlistment contract.

    2. Go with someone. You may feel more at ease if you take a friend, parent or someone else you trust.

    3. Know the ASVAB. You may get the job you want, but to do so, you must score well on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test. But the ASVAB alone doesn’t guarantee you’ll get the job you want. Military job selection also is based on other specified criteria, such as physical fitness, eyesight, security requirements and education level.

    4. Be stationed where you want. Some services have programs where they can guarantee your first duty station. Be sure to ask, but remember that after your first unit, you could serve anywhere.

Special duty pay is added to Army recruiters bi-weekly wages to reimburse them for the additional labour and training they are required to do.

    What Does A Military Recruiter Do

    First, lets briefly revisit what it means to be a military recruiter!

    Military recruiters, also commonly referred to as recruiting specialists, provide information on the service and training opportunities for prospective military recruits. In doing this, they may present at career programs and job fairs. Other than that, military recruits do the interviewing, testing, screening, and counseling for recruits. Essentially, recruiters filter and select qualified candidates to enlist in the U.S Armed Forces.

    The specific tasks a military recruiter takes on depend on his/her skill level. There are 3 levels:

    Skill Level 3

    Recruiters in this skill level work directly with prospective personnel. Their main duties are:

    • Interviewing candidates

    Skill Level 4

    Level 4 recruiters work primarily with level 3 recruiters and not so much with the candidates. Their duties are:

    • Training level 3 recruiters
    • Examining level 3 recruiters performance
    • Offering counseling to level 3 recruiters
    • Assisting level 3 recruiters in working with civilians

    Skill Level 5

    These are the senior recruiters, also called recruiter managers, that concentrate on development and management instead of working directly with civilians. They are in charge of:

    • Developing training programs, which includes:
    • Arranging recruitment programs
    • Examining recruitment statistics
    • Assessing recruiter performance reports

    Extra Pays And Allowances Help Take Their Salaries A Bit Further

    But troops receive a number of benefits and may qualify for extra allowances.

    TRICARE Prime, the military’s primary healthcare package, is free for active duty troops saving them the $6,896 average annual premium for single payers.

    When eligible to live off base, service members receive a basic allowance for housing , which increases at each paygrade the exact amount is set based on location and whether the individual has any children. Service members also receive allowances to help cover the cost of food and in expensive duty locations receive a cost of living allowance . Enlisted personnel also receive a stipend to help them pay for their uniforms.

    Any portion of a service member’s salary that is labeled as an “allowance” is not taxed by the government, so service members may only have to pay taxes for roughly two-thirds of their salary.

    Do not sign any papers until you take them home for a parent, teacher, or someone else whom you know and trust to review. You have every right to request time to read the paperwork before signing. If a recruiter is pressuring you to sign without reading everything carefully, they are not looking out for your best interests. Check out Sgt.     Make sure to get all the recruiter’s promises in writing in your enlistment agreement. Spoken promises will not protect you.

    Find out whether you need to pass a special test, get a security clearance, or do anything else before you can get the job or options that you want.

    Make sure you keep a complete copy of everything you sign. Don’t rely on a recruiter’s promise to provide you a copy at a later date.

    Do Recruiters Tell The Truth

    Its time to take an unbiased look at the most common falsehoods that recruiters tell prospects nowadays. The bad news, on the other hand, is that recruiters are known to deceive. The most typical recruiter falsehoods are generally well-intentioned and, for the most part, banal and unremarkable. The fabrications are occasionally included into the recruitment process, which may result in a negative applicant experience.

    Us Navy Officer Pay Scale

    Navy recruiters who are U.S. citizens, have a four-year degree from an accredited university, and who are between 19 and 42 years of age can go through the 12-week Officer Candidate School to become officers. This grade starts at O-1 with the rank of ensign.

    Pay starts at $3,95.80 per month for under two years of service and tops out at $4,260.60 per month for over three years of service. The highest pay grade is O-10, which is the rank of admiral. The maximum pay for this officer is $16,442 per month as determined by the Level II pay grade of the Executive Schedule of the federal government.

    Waivers are a pain in the ass. While the recruit has to prove theyre worth the trouble, the recruiter has to jump through far more hoops to get them through that means paperwork, meetings, and phone calls. It takes a lot for the recruiter to back-up their claim that the recruit is a fine addition to the military or they really, REALLY need the numbers.

    College Loan Repayment Program

    All of the active services, except the Marine Corps and Coast Guard, offer a college loan repayment program . The Army Reserves, Navy Reserves, Army National Guard and Air National Guard also offer a limited college loan repayment program. In a nutshell, the service will repay all, or a part of a college loan, in exchange for your enlistment. Loans which qualify are:

    • Auxiliary Loan Assistance for Students
