Gi Bill Bah Aka Monthly Housing Allowance

How Much Does The Military Pay

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs officially calls the GI Bill BAH the Monthly Housing Allowance . Veterans, National Guard and Reserve members, military spouses and children who are also GI Bill students are eligible for funds to help offset rental housing costs. Active duty military and their spouses and children who use GI Bill benefits are not eligible for MHA because they instead are eligible for BAH.

While MHA uses the same BAH rates, the calculations using the data differ.

The MHA rate is set at the E-5 rank for enlisted service members with dependents in the location where the majority of classes are taken, regardless of the number of dependents or rank. Students who are less than full-time students and with less than 36 months of active duty service receive a prorated monthly amount.

A student with a Rate of Pursuit greater than 50% can qualify for MHA. The RoP is a calculation used by VA to determine if a student is enrolled in more than 50% of classes as compared to a full-time student.

Students who only take online classes or attend a foreign school have separate rates.

New BAH rates are effective annually on Jan. 1 of each year, but MHA rates are effective Aug. 1 of each year. So, when looking up E-5 with dependent MHA rates, the previous years BAH rate table is used to determine MHA for the first seven months of the year.

The BAHs rate increases affect all branches of the military where applicable.

Pretty self-explanatory from the name. The BAH is essentially an allowance to help reduce the financial burden for military members moving to different areas.

When youre in the military, you move around a lot.

Depending on where youre stationed, this can get expensive.

For example, if youre stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii, the cost of renting an apartment or owning a home can be way more substantial than say Topeka, Kansas.

As a result, the US military makes up the difference by offering a basic allowance for housing.

Using our BAH calculator above, heres the Basic Allowance for Housing for an E-5 based in Honolulu County, Hawaii:

However, contrast that with the BAH for Sedgwick county, Kansas, and youll see a huge difference in allowance:

        How Are Bah Rates Calculated

All rates are based on 100 percent eligibility. To find out how much you should receive each month, multiply the money per month by your percentage.

Benefit level may be further reduced based on your rate of pursuit rounded to nearest multiple of 10. Benefits are only payable when the rate of pursuit is more than 50 percent, and the student is not on active duty. For example, for undergrad students, full-time is 12 credits. If a student is taking 10 credits, then 10/12 = .83, and the rate of pursuit is then 80 percent. Graduate students use 9 credits as full-time, and Law School students use 10 credits.

New BAH rates are adjusted annually by federal calendar year, but are applied for GI Bill® purposes on Aug. 1 of each year. For VA purposes, all months have 30 days. Law students generally start classes earlier and therefore they’ll receive more than the amounts above for August and January.

BAH rates are based on the Department of Defenses rates for an E-5 with dependents designation for the zip code of your school. View DoD BAH Rate Calculator.

First, a legislative proposal was approved in the Fiscal Year 2015 National Defense Authorization Act that allows the Department to reintroduce a member cost-sharing element , not to exceed one percent of national average housing costs by grade. Second, renter’s insurance was eliminated from the 2015 Basic Allowance for Housing rate computation.

An out-of-pocket amount was incorporated early in the Basic Allowance for Housing program to limit Basic Allowance for Housing rates to a defined budget. These out-of-pocket costs were reduced from nearly 20% in 2000 to elimination in 2005.

The actual impact of the changes to Basic Allowance for Housing computations will vary depending on a member’s housing choices. Members who rent a median-priced property will have to pay a small amount above their Basic Allowance for Housing rate. Members who choose to economize in their housing choices may have all their housing expenses covered by Basic Allowance for Housing. Some members, renting properties above the median price for the area, have already been paying some housing costs out of pocket.

On average, the cost of renter’s insurance contributed about $20/month to the Basic Allowance for Housing rates, with the actual amount varying by grade and location. Members who obtain renter’s insurance will now need to budget for this expense separately.
