How Much Money Does A Navy Seal Make In A Year

How much does a Navy SEAL make a year?

The estimated average pay for a United States Navy Seal with more than 12 years of experience is around $54,000 per year, notes ABC News. There are additional pay raises for any military personnel that have advanced skill sets, such as sharpshooting, parachuting or demolition expertise.

U.S. Navy Seals with fewer than 2 years of experience typically receive the base military pay, which is anywhere between $20,000 and $30,000 per year, as of 2015. With each additional year, Seals can move up in pay as well as move up in a tiered pay-grade, which ranks anywhere from E-1 to E-7.

Along with their normal yearly salary, Navy Seals often receive other monetary compensation such as housing and food allowances. These allowances vary based on where the Seal is stationed, and the local food and housing markets. Furthermore, Seals who have special skill sets and perform special duties are given bonuses, such as divers and parachuters, notes ABC News. Finally, retired service members are often given fractions of their pay throughout their retirement. If a U.S. Navy Seal was on active duty for more than 20 years, they are eligible to receive 50 percent of their average base salary. For every year above 30 years of active duty, retired members can receive an addition 2.5 percent of their base pay, notes NavySeal.com.

Emergency And Supplemental Spending

The recent military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan were largely funded through supplementary spending bills that supplemented the annual military budget requests for each fiscal year. However, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were categorized as “overseas contingency operations” in the starting of the fiscal year 2010, and the budget is included in the federal budget.

By the end of 2008, the U.S. had spent approximately $900 billion in direct costs on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The government also incurred indirect costs, which include interests on additional debt and incremental costs, financed by the Veterans Administration, of caring for more than 33,000 wounded. Extra Pays And Allowances Help Take Their Salaries A Bit Further

Base pay can seem stingy, especially at the lower ranks where enlisted receive around $20,000 per year.

But troops receive a number of benefits and may qualify for extra allowances.

TRICARE Prime, the military’s primary healthcare package, is free for active duty troops saving them the $6,896 average annual premium for single payers.

When eligible to live off base, service members receive a basic allowance for housing , which increases at each paygrade the exact amount is set based on location and whether the individual has any children. Service members also receive allowances to help cover the cost of food and in expensive duty locations receive a cost of living allowance . Enlisted personnel also receive a stipend to help them pay for their uniforms.

Any portion of a service member’s salary that is labeled as an “allowance” is not taxed by the government, so service members may only have to pay taxes for roughly two-thirds of their salary.

What Is Drill Pay

Base pay for military members depends on several factors, including whether they are serving in active duty or the reserves. Active duty members receive full-time pay, while National Guard and reserve members who are not on active duty receive part-time pay, or drill pay, depending on the number of drills they perform each month.
