It’s a good idea to bring a parent, relative, or better yet, someone who has served in the military for your first visit. However, make sure it’s someone you’re comfortable with hearing the answers to the personal questions your recruiter will ask during that first interview. These include, “Have you ever used drugs?” The recruiter asks these questions to make sure he knows your basic qualifications and whether or not he can afford to spend valuable time with you. If you don’t want your parents to hear the truthful answer to these questions, you’re probably better off going alone.

How ‘top Gun’ Sequel Could Help Boost Military Recruitment

More than half of the young Americans who answered the survey about 57% think they would have emotional or psychological problems after serving in the military. Nearly half think they would have physical problems.

They think theyre going to be physically or emotionally broken after serving, said one senior U.S. military official familiar with the recruiting issues, who believes a lack of familiarity with military service contributes to that perception.

Among Americans surveyed by the Pentagon who were in the target age range for recruiting, only 13% had parents who had served in the military, down from approximately 40% in 1995. The military considers parents one of the biggest influencers for service.

An expert on military personnel policy says that middle class parents, including those who are newly middle class, often encourage their kids to go to college before selecting a career, which hurts recruiting for enlisted personnel. Changing the mind of parents is the really tough part, particularly if these are parents who worked really hard for their children to go to college, said Kate Kuzminski from the Center for a New American Security. She noted that recruiting ads increasingly target the parents of potential recruits. Thats where theyre trying to win the hearts and minds.

How Much Do Recruiters Make

Sohow much do recruiters make a single year? As weve already established, there is virtually no limit to how much an external recruiter can earn.

The average placement fee in Top Echelons recruiting network last year was $18,571.

Top Echelon also recently conducted a poll of its Network recruiters. As part of that poll, TE asked recruiters this question:

How many perm placements did you make in 2016?

The choice of answers that we provided is listed below, along with the percentage of Network recruiters that selected each one:

  • 0-5 20.2%
  • 21-25 5.6%
  • More than 25 13.7%

For the sake of argument, lets use the most popular answer in this poll. That answer was 11-15 placements, which garnered 28.2% of the vote. Next, well take the low end of the range, which is 11 perm placements. So lets do a little math, shall we?

11 perm placements x $18,571 = $204,281

So using this information, we can surmise that an average external recruiter is capable of billing over $200,000 in a single calendar year.

However, as you can see, there are many recruiters who make much more than that. For example, 13.7% of recruiters in the poll chose more than 25 placements as their answer. So lets run the numbers there. Once again, well use the low end of the spectrum. Thats 26 placements, which is one more than 25.

How Much Do Recruiters Make A Year

For the answer to this question, lets go straight to the source, shall we? Yes, lets ask agency recruiters how much money they make in a calendar year. Luckily for us, we have such a group of recruiting industry professionals willing to answer that question: the recruiters of the Top Echelon recruiting network!

We recently conducted a poll of our Network recruiters. As part of that poll, TE asked recruiters this question: What was the cash-in total for your full desk recruiting in 2016? The choice of answers that we provided is listed below, along with the percentage of Network recruiters that selected each one:

  • Less than $100K 24.0%
  • $250K to $300K 9.9%
  • Over $300K 15.7%

As you can see, 76% of the Top Echelon recruiters participating in the poll earn more than $100K. Not only that, but 41.3% of them also earned more than 200K. And last but certainly not least, 15.7% of these recruiters earned more than $300K.

How Much Do Recruiters Make A Year Their Client List Will Tell You

Lets work this whole process backwards, shall we?

  • To receive a placement fee, a recruiter must make a . . . wait for it . . . placement.
  • To make a placement, a recruiter must have a job order.
  • To have a job order, a recruiter must receive one from a client.
  • A recruiter must have a client.
  • So theres the starting point! Theres usually a limit to the number of job orders that a recruiter receives from any one client. So the key for a recruiter to make a lot of money on both a monthly and yearly basis is having more than one client. In fact, recruiters usually strive to have as many clients as they possibly can. This prevents them from putting all of their eggs in one basket.

    Of course, being flush with clients is easier said than done. How do recruiters find clients? Thats a story for a different blog post.

    So the more clients you have, the more job orders youll have. The more job orders you have, the more opportunities youll have to make placements.

    Okay, lets not mince words here. Learning how to be a great recruiter within an agency can be a very rewarding career choice. In other words, you can make a lot of money.

    However, it takes more than just a large client base and a fistful of job orders. You also need to have plenty of qualified candidates.

    Applicant Evaluation And Testing

    A recruiter evaluates an applicants educational, psychological and occupational history to determine which military programs may appeal to him. The recruiter administers and scores screening exams and counsels applicants on their scores. The recruiter also sets up the Armed Services Vocational Battery, a series of tests that measure an applicants psychological and mental capacity in relation to job opportunities in the military.

    Lies Recruiters Tell Recruits Joining The Military

    First and foremost, itd be completely unethical and totally unfair to say that all military recruiters lie to everyone interested in joining the military. That would be completely untrue. Recruiting for the military, just like any job in any part of the world, is comprised of people. Sometimes honest people, sometimes dishonest people.

    In the interest of full disclosure, understand that military recruiters DO undergo sales training in order to receive a station. This fact carries a couple of implications that you should keep in mind when you go to talk to a recruiter. Hopefully that doesnt ruin the prospect of enlisting for you. Just keep in mind that your recruiter does stand to gain something by getting you to enlist, but not much. They may have a quota to meet, but otherwise, they still collect a paycheck regardless of whether or not you join.

    The truth is that sales training is required because the military has hundreds of thousands of people leaving every year, and recruiters are necessary to get young people to join in order to maintain the military population. These guys do serve an integral role in the military by keeping recruits coming in while there are so many going out whether by retirement, washing out, or simply completing their military service obligation.

    How To Fix It

    To tackle the growing crisis, the Pentagon is reviewing some of the more than 250 disqualifiers for service, including some medical conditions that have historically required recruits to obtain a waiver for service or kept individuals out of uniform completely, according to multiple defense and U.S. military officials.

    For example, in the past ailments like asthma and ADHD could disqualify someone from serving if the recruit had symptoms after their 13th or 14th birthdays. But now the Pentagon is reviewing whether individuals who have been asymptomatic for a shorter period of time could join without a waiver.

    The military is also discussing allowing service members to use platforms like TikTok to attract recruits. In 2020, President Donald Trump ordered a ban on the use of the social media platform because the Chinese company that owns it collects biometric information on users.

    We have to be where the recruits are, and TikTok is one of the biggest social media platforms in the world, one defense official involved in personnel issues said.

    The Pentagon is also looking to increase recruitment by targeting more influencers like parents, teachers and coaches, by creating recruiting stations with multiple services in them rather than service specific locations, and even moving recruiting offices to better neighborhoods, according to multiple U.S. military and defense officials.

    The Pentagon may also put more effort into recruiting eligible DACA recipients, said officials.

    Questions To Ask Your Recruiter

    It’s a good idea to prepare a list of questions to ask, in advance. Be as specific as possible. While most recruiters will not lie to you, remember that the recruiter lives or dies by the number of people he/she can recruit. He or she may not volunteer information which may chase away a potential quota-maker.

    It’s up to you to ask pointed, specific, no-nonsense questions, and expect direct answers. Be very suspicious of any unclear, or vague answers. Always press for specifics. If in doubt, ask the recruiter to put the information in writing, and sign it, or to show you in the regulations, guides, or pamphlets that what he/she is saying is true.

    If you’re joining the active duty Air Force or the active duty Navy, in most cases, you don’t want to ask too many questions about specific military jobs. Job selections for these branches are performed during your processing at the Military Entrance Processing Station , and the recruiters have nothing to do with it.

    Rather, focus your questions on the general advantages of that particular service , medical care, barracks/dormitory/housing conditions, education benefits, etc.as).     Getting Down To Basics

    Sooner or later, you’re going to have to stop shopping, and decide on which military service you want to join. You may have met a recruiter who impressed you, or you may have met a recruiter that left you cold. It’s important that you not choose your military service based upon your perception of the recruiter’s quality. Choose your service based on your interests, not whether or not the recruiter was kind enough to buy you lunch at McDonald’s.

    Once you make your decision, make an appointment with the recruiter for the service you want to join. The first thing the recruiter is going to do is to pre-qualify you. The recruiter will ask you a bunch of questions to see if you qualify for military service. These will be questions about age, citizenship or immigration status, education level, criminal history, drug abuse history, and medical conditions. The recruiter may weigh you, and ask to see personal paperwork .

    Air Force Recruiter Salary

    At a minimum, Air Force recruiters must have achieved the rank of senior airman and have served either three years of a four-year enlistment, or five years of a six-year enlistment. Senior airman is the fourth step up the enlisted ranks, designated as E-4 on the pay table.

    An E-4 with three-plus years of service earned $2,507 a month as of 2020, equal to $30,084 a year, according to Military Benefits. An E-4 with five-plus years of service was one step higher on the seniority scale, and earned $2,747 per month, or $32,964 per year. Recruiters with a higher rank or more time served are paid more, of course.

    What Does A Military Recruiter Do

    First, lets briefly revisit what it means to be a military recruiter!

    Military recruiters, also commonly referred to as recruiting specialists, provide information on the service and training opportunities for prospective military recruits. In doing this, they may present at career programs and job fairs. Other than that, military recruits do the interviewing, testing, screening, and counseling for recruits. Essentially, recruiters filter and select qualified candidates to enlist in the U.S Armed Forces.

    The specific tasks a military recruiter takes on depend on his/her skill level. There are 3 levels:

    Skill Level 3

    Recruiters in this skill level work directly with prospective personnel. Their main duties are:

    • Interviewing candidates

    Skill Level 4

    Level 4 recruiters work primarily with level 3 recruiters and not so much with the candidates. Their duties are:

    • Training level 3 recruiters
    • Examining level 3 recruiters performance
    • Offering counseling to level 3 recruiters
    • Assisting level 3 recruiters in working with civilians

    Skill Level 5

    These are the senior recruiters, also called recruiter managers, that concentrate on development and management instead of working directly with civilians. They are in charge of:

    • Developing training programs, which includes:
    • Arranging recruitment programs
    • Examining recruitment statistics
    • Assessing recruiter performance reports

    What Is A Us Army Recruiter

    In the U.S. Army, a Recruiter NCO is part of the Adjutant General’s Corps. His or her duties are described as “Recruits qualified personnel for entry into the Army in accordance with applicable regulations, supervises recruiting and recruiting support activities.”

    Recruiters may be skill level 3, 4, or 5. People working at skill level 3 are “on the ground,” working directly with young people who are interested in an Army career. At higher levels, Army recruiters are developing recruitment plans, managing programs, and making presentations.

    I want to talk to someone who knows their shit but isn’t talking to me in a biased way which quite honestly, I feel like nobody will meet the criteria. Everybody is biased as to what branch they were in, among other things.

    This is my future and this is what I want to be doing for the rest of my life: I want to find out what is the best fit for me. I plan on using the military as getting my foot in the door for other government related careers, but who knows I may want to stay with it for a whole lot longer than the contract says.
