How Military Recruiting Works: The Basics

Military recruiters are made, not born. Most recruiters are themselves recruited or volunteer to retrain out of other military careers. All military members who become recruiters must attend an intensive technical training course. Not all succeed in passing these courses, making the career field stronger through a process of weeding out.

Once graduating from the training, these individuals are assigned where the military feels they are most needed and they begin learning their new community and how to find the best candidates there.

A military recruiters office in the 21st century isnt just a brick-and-mortar locationthe official websites for Army Recruiting and the equivalents for other branches of service normally feature a form or other contact method you can use to ask questions or get more information online.

Recruiters perform a variety of duties in service of filling the ranksthey work with local high schools, operate or advise Junior ROTC programs, do community service events, drive their clients to military entrance processing stations, and even create or maintain physical fitness programs to help people get ready for boot camp.

Top Industries Employing Recruiters

What industries are hiring recruiters? It may be better to ask which are not. Almost any industry can be positively by working with skilled individuals who understand the hiring process.

These have a special designation because of the special skills and insights they bring to the job. Lots of times recruiters are determined by their industry. For instance, technical recruiters are in high-demand right now because of the unique demands of tech companies.

Are Recruiting And Staffing Agencies Different

You will also hear a lot about staffing agencies in any discussion about recruiters. Staffing agencies, temporary agencies, or contract staffing companies are all able to provide client companies with short-term help for a variety of reasons. It could be a project that requires additional skills or to fill in for someone on an extended leave. Seasonal employment situations can also benefit from agency partnerships.

Just because a staffing agency places temp workers it doesnt mean they cant also provide direct-hire solutions as well.

One option staffing agencies can provide for companies is temporary-to-hire staffing. This means they will place someone on an assignment on a temporary basis and if the client and the employee agree, the company will have the opportunity to hire the employee onto their own payroll. The fees would be established between the client company and the staffing agency.

How Recruiting Companies Make Money

How much does a recruiter make per recruit? Recruitment ...

Weve looked at individual recruiters, but what about the recruiting companies themselves? How much money do recruiting companies or staffing agencies make? As is the case with individual agency recruiters, the sky is pretty much the limit. There is no cap for individual recruiters, so there is also no cap for recruiting agencies.

However, this is where the agency owner can reap the most benefits. Lets say, for example, that a recruiter owns his own agency. Hes the only one running the agency, a solo practitioner, if you will. That practitioner bills the $500,000 per year that we discussed above. The firm grows to the point where the owner hires other recruiters to work for him.

Lets say the owner hires three other recruiters, and this is what they bill in the first year:

Can A Student Group Set Up A Table Or Stand Next To Recruiters And Hand Out Anti

Probably. Students have a right to express their opinions as long as they dont disrupt classes, block hallways, or disrupt other school activities. But schools can set limits about when, where and how students can distribute materials, such as fliers or pamphlets.

In general, students should let school officials know in advance if theyre planning to set up a table or stand next to recruiters to distribute pamphlets. Sometimes, school officials may ask to see the materials ahead of time and ask how students plan to give them out. If youre not sure whether or not a school official is behaving appropriately, ask to see the school or districts written policies on students First Amendment rights.

How Much Does A Recruiter Make In A Month

If youre a direct hire recruiter only, that means youll only get paid when you make a direct hire placement. Until then, youll get nothing and like it. With that in mind, just about every recruiter would like to make at least one placement per month. That keeps the cash flowing . . . just the way it should be. But what does that look like, exactly?

Well, lets use the numbers from our above example. Lets say you make one placement per month, and your average placement fee is $14,000. Then its simple. Youre making $14,000 per month!

However, thats not the way that life works for agency recruiters who only make direct hire placements. Thats because they dont make any placements at all during some months. Thats right: a big, fat zero. Sure, they might make two placements the next month. Then again, maybe they wont.

Thats why offering contract placement services to clients is a smart business move for recruiters. When you make contract placements, you receive money every week that your contractor works. So even if you fail to make a direct hire placement during a given month, youll still have money coming in from your contract placements.

Worried about the extra administrative work that comes along with contract placements? Dont be. With Top Echelons contract staffing services, we worry about the administrative hassle, and you focus on recruiting.

What If Your Job Isnt Available

There are several options to consider if the Army doesnt have the job you want. What does the Air Force or the Navy offer? Does the Marine Corps or the Coast Guard have the career you seek?

Military recruiters often use a catchphrase amongst themselves First contact, first contract which basically refers to a truism that a lot of people wind up enlisting in the first recruiting office they encounter or the first branch of military service they encounter. But you DO NOT have to live up to that cliche.

Its perfectly acceptable to talk to other branches of servicedont let a recruiter discourage you from doing so and pay no attention if someone is actually unprofessional enough to try to dissuade you from doing so. It is your right to make a fully informed decision.

The previously mentioned Delayed Entrance Program is one resource you can explore to try to land your dream military job, talking to the other branches of service is another, but may also wish to consider a career that DOES have openings that is similar to your original choices. This isnt always practical or useful, but when it IS, you may find alternatives you never gave a second thought to.

Whats The Difference Between A Recruiter And A Headhunter

How much money do you make as a recruiter

Recruiting is a specialized industry, but what makes recruiters different from a headhunter? If you Google it, you will find conflicting information. Some say headhunters are just recruiters, that the title is merely semantics. Others will suggest that the term headhunter is an outsourced person contracted by a company to find employees while a recruiter is in house. But that distinction is incorrect as agencies also employ recruiters. Some people use the title “Headhunter” when they work as independent recruiters or executive recruiters.

The truth is, the terms are not that different and it really is a matter of degrees whether someone chooses to use one over the other. However, you may find a few other designations.

  • Contingency Recruiter: Their fee is contingent on the individual being hired.
  • Retained Recruiter: They are paid by the client company much like people keep a lawyer on retainer.
  • Corporate Recruiter: These are the in-house or HR recruiters.
  • Temporary or Contract Staffing: Recruiters assist with finding short term or contract employees.
  • Outplacement Agencies: If you lose your job, you may be referred to an outplacement agency.

All of these can be headhunters if they choose to use that term to describe what they do.

Fewer Recruiters Individual Quotas: How The Army Is Modernizing Recruiting

U.S. Army Recruiting Command has faced its fair share of challenges in getting prospective soldiers into boots over the past few years, including the constraints of the COVID-19 pandemic, a shrinking pool of physically and medically qualified Americans and slipping trust in the military among the public.

Despite those factors, the command just barely missed its accessions goals in fiscal 2021, according to data requested by Army Times.

USAREC secured 57,606 active-duty accessions against a goal of 57,500 this past fiscal year, the command said. The shortfall came on the Army Reserve side, with only 11,690 applicants shipping to training despite a target of 15,875.

Although the Army is asking USAREC to do better in fiscal 2022, the command will have fewer recruiters.

But USAREC still thinks it can hit its goal by giving each recruiter their own quota and designated territory to build stronger community connections.

We are reducing our recruiting force size again, confirmed Maj. Gen. Kevin Vereen, USARECs commanding general, during a media roundtable last month. So with that, we have to be…more streamlined and more efficient in how we recruit.

Why are there fewer recruiters?

Traditionally, the Army has filled the recruiting ranks by soliciting volunteers and involuntarily selecting thousands of NCOs for three-year tours with USAREC. Relatively few recruiters remain with the command long-term.

How Do Recruiters Make Money

There is one thing that internal recruiters and external recruiters have in common. Thats who pays them. In all placement situations, the company pays the recruiter, not the candidate. The only difference is that the internal recruiter is paid a yearly salary by a single organization. An external recruiter is paid much differently.

External recruiters do not receive a salary. They receive what is called a recruitment fee or a placement fee. This can take the form of a check or an electronic transfer. Here are some different aspects of this fee:

  • The company always pays the fee, not the candidate.
  • External recruiters typically receive fees from multiple organizations. They refer to these organizations as their clients or client companies.
  • The amount of each placement fee is different. Thats because its based upon the candidates first-year salary. That does not mean the company takes money from the candidate and gives it to the recruiter.
  • Heres an illustration to explain that third point more clearly.

A recruiter works a search for an automation engineer. The salary for the position is $70,000. As per the agreement that the recruiter has with their client, they will be paid 20% of the candidates first-year salary. So . . . 20% of $70,000 is $14,000. Once the recruiter places that candidate, their client will send them $14,000. Not right away, though. It usually takes 30, 60, or 90 days.

When You Think You Might Be Ready To Commit

One aspect of military recruiting some dont think about before they initially say yes to the military? The screening process. Recruits will be asked screening questions that include some variation of the following:

Have you ever been charged, arrested, cited, or held for any criminal offense? Some versions of this may omit things like traffic stops for moving violations or other minor offenses. Be prepared for this screening process and know that a background check will be performed to make sure you have no outstanding criminal warrants, criminal record, pending proceedings against you, etc.

Applicants should know that financial responsibility is a prime concern in the militaryif you have outstanding unpaid financial obligations ESPECIALLY in areas of child support, alimony, or other issues you will want to start resolving those immediately and before your background check begins for best results.

The background check and other procedures leading up to the presentation of your enlistment contract will take a bit of timeif you are in a hurry to join, ask the recruiter about your options to ship out quickly or vice-versa if you feel you need extra time before boot camp.

Also, when your military contract is ready, carefully read and review it and make certain ALL details are correct including the following:
