British Army Reserve HOW MUCH TIME DO I HAVE TO GIVE UP TO JOIN THE ARMY RESERVE

There must be easier part-time jobs, so why else might you join the TA? Well, on one online forum, Running Free explains: Joining the TA has got to be the best thing I have done in my life so far.

In the TA you get to do so many things, some that you probably couldn’t do in your civilian life – and get paid for it. I’m in the Infantry and with this you probably get the most varied and exciting training compared with, lets say, if you joined the Signals.

As well as your weekend training , each year you get to go on annual two-week training camp abroad.

He then lists off the places hes been, including Cyprus, Gibralter and Corsica. I cant help but wonder when Afghanistan might pop up on that list, but so far Running Free has had a great time.

On average, a TA soldier gets £9,000-worth of training a year, so its often quite appealing to employers. Theres some guidance on balancing TA and work commitments here.

Active Duty Spouse Or Member

If you are planning on joining the military and planning on getting married, there are certain advantages and disadvantages to tying that knot before you leave for basic training. As with any marriage, there are challenges. However, there are many challenges unique to the military. Being gone half the time is a real possibility depending on what job in the military and person selects. There are some jobs that do not deploy at all

The divorce rate in the United States is about 50 percent, and that statistic follows over to the military. The military divorce rate is traditionally a little higher, because of the difficulty of a military life brings its challenges to the family. Frequent moves and trips, unaccompanied assignments, long working hours, combat deployments, and potentially dangerous work can add to the stresses of married life. Some units within the military such as special operations tend to have a higher average divorce rate than other military counterparts and civilian society. However, the military provides many benefits to help the family, unlike many other employers, do. Here are a few of the monetary and living benefits available to military members:

Military Retirement Benefits Are Worth Millions

Becoming a military physician: The basics

Its not an exaggeration to say military retirement benefits are worth millions of dollars.

Military members receive a lifetime pension based on the average of their highest three years of base pay. Military retirees who are in the High 3 Retirement System receive 2.5% of their base pay for each year of service. So 20 years of service would equate to a pension worth 50% of their highest 3 years of base pay .

Members who are participating in the new Blended Retirement System use the same calculations, except that you would use a 2.0% multiplier instead of 2.5%. So a retirement at 20 years would be 40%, 25 years would be 50%, and 30 years would be 60%. However, there are two big additions: the first is matching TSP contributions of up to 5% of your base pay, allowing you to have portable retirement benefits when you leave the military, even if you dont reach retirement. The other is a Continuation Pay Bonus, which is a mid-career cash bonus for extending your service commitment.

Example retirement value:

Enlisted members earn somewhat less than commissioned officers. However, their pensions are based on the same formula and receive the same cost of living increases each year. So you can easily run the numbers and get a rough approximation of potential retirement benefits. For example, a $2,500 a month pension is worth $30,000 per year. That would be worth $300,000, $600,000, or $900,000 over 10, 20, or 30 years.

Basic Allowance For Housing

BAH is a nontaxable allowance to offset housing costs. The amount of BAH is determined by rank, duty assignment, and the presence of dependents. Service members who live in government-owned housing either in barracks, dorms, or family housing forfeit their housing allowance. BAH is determined through a survey of housing costs in each community for the housing size designated as the standard for each rank. BAH rates are published on the Defense Travel Management Office web page.

The Territorial Army Is Expanding So Would You Consider Signing Up You Get Paid And You Can Probably Cancel That Gym Subscription But How Challenging Is It And What Are The Chances You’ll Have To Go To War

Joining the Territorial Army has long been a way for everyday civilians to enjoy a taste of army life and earn some extra money.

And right now is a great time to consider getting involved. The Army is set to lose 20,000 regular soldiers by 2020, and the number of reservists is to double to 30,000 to make up for it.

With the TA about to undergo a huge expansion, now could be a good time to volunteer for Queen, country, and a little extra cash.

This is of real interest to me, as Im an army brat. Both of my parents were in the Army and I grew up on military bases in Germany. I often miss the Armed Forces community, so maybe this is a way to earn some extra money, improve my fitness and make life-long friends.

So could the TA be the answer?

What Can You Do

There are so many different roles in the Army itself and some of these are replicated in the TA. You might want to look for a role that uses your existing skills or you might prefer to simply join your nearest unit and learn new skills.

Getting Fit With Fitt

As a rule of thumb, ease into your activities, gradually increase each element of FITT, and end each session with a cool-down. For example:

  • Begin with a 5- to 10-minute warm-up. Walking, biking or a slow jog will increase blood flow to the muscles and lightly increase your heart rate. Follow up with some light stretching of the muscles you will be using in your workout.
  • Improving your overall fitness is most effectively done through a combination of 20 to 60 minutes of aerobic and strength exercises. The two sample fitness sessions below are based on Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology guidelines.
  • A 5- to 10-minute cool-down helps return your body to its normal, pre-exercise condition. Suddenly stopping an intense workout can make you dizzy, nauseated or even faint. Walking, biking or a slow jog will gradually bring down your heart rate and relieve muscle soreness.

Time In Grade Time In Service Counts

There is also an overall TIS or Time In Service which also affects your pay and certain allowances the longer you spend in uniform as an active duty service member or Reservist, the higher your pay can go.

In both cases there are federal limits on the amount of the pay raise you get upon certain career milestones such as passing the two-year mark on your initial enlistment depending on the rank and time spent serving. Stay in the military for six years and you may be entitled to a pay raise at years two and four, but depending on your Time-In-Grade you may stop getting pay raises at year six until you get promoted.

Promotions are dependent on both time in grade AND time in serviceyou cant get promoted to another rank without having spent a minimum amount of time on duty in your current military rank and youll find it important to seek guidance on how long you must serve at your current rank before being eligible for a promotion.

Fundamentals About Reserve Pay

Like the active duty troops, Reservists also get basic pay, allowances where appropriate, and special pay where appropriate. But this pay is offered only for the periods of service the Reservists show up for including training, drill weekends, and active duty service when activated.

Depending on your status as a Reserve member you may be eligible to earn time on active duty that can be counted toward a Post 9/11 GI Bill once the minimum active duty service time has been reached.

Reservists who are called to active duty will be paid for their active service the same as for regular Army troops or other service membersReservists called to active duty service are compensated for the time spent working on active duty and those Reservists who serve on active duty earn days toward qualifying for education benefits like the Post 9/11 GI Bill.
