The Big Picture Of Military Pay

The U.S. military is extremely large and intricate. There are different branches of the military, service members have different ranks, they hold different jobs, and some personnel have been in the service longer than others. Some soldiers live on base, some off. There are allowances available in some cases, and there are bonuses paid in others. There are benefits of different kinds for different types of military members. Understanding the big picture of military pay begins with understanding that pay doesnt start and stop with salary and/or hours worked. Pay is designed for each individual, and bonuses and allowances are still an aspect of the big picture even if they arent an aspect of base salary. Joining the military tends to cause a positive trajectory in finances that can help credit and overall spending power as a result of a pay system designed for each situation. The different levels of pay depend on various aspects of a soldiers life from credit history to having children. Some aspects arent added to a salary or hourly rate, but do make a difference in an active service members net income each year. Some of those levels include:

  • Base Pay: Not to be confused with a military base, this is a foundational level of compensation, or starting point.Everyone on active duty receives a base pay, determined mostly by rank and how long youve served in the military.

    Understanding Military Pay

Because we are salaried employees, calculating an hourly wage can be depressing. Also, work hours in a week can vary wildly, depending on whether you are deployed, in garrison, or TDY.

If you are working 12 hour shifts 7 days a week, that’s 84 hours per week of work. If you are in garrison and working 0730-1630 Monday-Friday, you’re only working 45 hours per week .

But assuming an average of 2000 hours worked in a year, as an 8 year military officer in 2018 I made $45.50 per hour.

    United States Military Pay

United States military pay is money paid to members in the United States Armed Forces. The amount of pay may vary by the member’s rank, time in the military, location duty assignment, and by some special skills the member may have.

Pay will be largely based on rank, which goes from E-1 to E-9 for enlisted members, O-1 to O-10 for commissioned officers and W-1 to W-5 for warrant officers. Commissioned officers and warrant officers will often have higher pay-grades than their enlisted counterparts. Early pay-grade promotions are quite frequent, but promotions past E-4 will be fewer.

    Basic Pay Chart And Raises

Basic pay is a service members primary compensation. Two main factors affect where you fall on the basic pay scale: your years of service and your rank, which generally correspond with your military pay grade.

Basic pay rates are calculated monthly, rather than weekly or bimonthly, and are subject to taxes like civilian pay. And just like salaried civilians in the private sector youre not eligible for overtime pay. Your monthly pay is automatically split in half and distributed twice a month, but if youre in the Army or Air Force, you can opt to receive a monthly lump sum instead.

Save Pdf Copies Of Your Les

One tip I recommend for all military servicemembers, enlisted or officer, is to download a PDF copy of your Leave and Earnings Statement every month from MyPay and save it in Google Drive, Dropbox, or some other cloud storage solution.

The military is notorious for withholding pay or deducting pay due to clerical/administrative errors. I keep a copy of all my LESs in PDF form so I have a record of what they have and have not paid me.

It has saved me a few times when I have been accused of being overpaid or underpaid.

    Reserve/national Guard Drill Pay

According to Title 37 United States Code §206, the basic pay amount for a single drill is equal to 1/30th of the basic pay for active duty servicemembers.

For members of the Army Reserve and National Guard performing duties with their units on battle assembly weekends, pay is usually based on four drill sessions of four hours per session, equal in pay to four days of active duty pay.

    • Basic allowance for housing
    • Basic allowance for subsistence : BAS is meant to offset costs for a member’s meals. This allowance is based in the historic origins of the military in which the military provided room and board as part of a member’s pay. This allowance is not intended to offset the costs of meals for family members.

Beginning on January 1, 2002, all enlisted members received full BAS, but paid for their meals . It was the culmination of the BAS reform transition period.

Because BAS is intended to provide meals for the service member, its level is linked to the price of food. Therefore, each year it is adjusted based upon the increase of the price of food as measured by the USDA food cost index. This is why the increase to BAS will not necessarily be the same percentage as that applied to the increase in the pay table, as annual pay raises are linked to the increase of private sector wages. As of 2010, enlisted members receive $323.87 warrant officers and commissioned officers receive $223.04 per month. As of 2018, commissioned officers receive $254.39 per month.

    Basic Allowance For Subsistence

BAS is a nontaxable allowance intended to offset the cost of the service members meals. The BAS rate is adjusted annually based on the cost of food. All officers receive the same allowance, $266.18 per month in 2021. Most enlisted personnel receive the regular BAS of $386.50. Enlisted personnel in basic training are required to eat in government dining facilities and thus do not receive BAS.

    Other Pays And Allowances

The local finance office can provide additional information about the many other special pays and allowances available in special circumstances or to service members performing certain duties. Examples of special pays and allowances include but are not limited to:

The tax implications of the various military pays and allowances can prove complicated. Some types of military compensation are taxable and others are not.

A useful rule of thumb: If the entitlement contains the word pay in the title i.e., Basic Pay it is considered taxable income unless the service member is serving in a designated tax-free combat zone. In a combat zone, all income earned by enlisted service members is tax free, including assignment and re-enlistment bonuses.

Officers may exclude from income tax only the amount equal to the highest monthly rate of enlisted pay plus their $225 Imminent Danger Pay. If the entitlement contains the word allowance in the title i.e., Basic Allowance for Housing it usually is nontaxable.

The following example illustrates monthly pay and how that pay is taxed for a third-year E-4 with a family, when deployed to Iraq from his/her duty station at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.:

    In garrison: $2,507.10 basic pay + $386.50 BAS + $1,908 BAH = $4,801.60 total .

    Basic Allowance For Housing

Basic Allowance for Housing is a monthly payment meant to subsidize a servicemember’s housing while deployed. The amount of BAH received each month depends on the location in which they live.

The average Basic Housing Allowance for a Private with dependants is $1,548.40, or $1,228.08 with no dependants.

    Special And Incentive Pay

When service members deploy, they receive additional pays and allowances based on their deployment location, length of deployment, and whether they have a family. Special and Incentive pays include:

    • Family Separation Allowance is paid during extended periods of family separation. FSA is $250 per month.
    • Hostile Fire/Imminent Danger Pay is for service members serving within an officially declared hostile fire/imminent danger zone. The current rate is $225 per month.
    • Hardship Duty Pay comes in three designations.
    • HDP-Location compensates service members assigned to locations outside the continental United States where living conditions are substantially below the standard members serving stateside would endure. Rates are paid in increments of $50, $100, or $150 per month, based on the level of hardship in a
    • HDP-Mission compensates officers and enlisted personnel for performing designated hardship missions.
    • HDP-Tempo involves personnel who are mobilized or deployed for a specified mission. Secretaries of the military departments are authorized to designate such missions, but none have been implemented.
  • Assignment Incentive Pay is a popular program that rewards service members on extended tours or unusual assignments. Personnel can receive from $200 to $3,000 extra per month, depending on the circumstances.
  • Raise Military Pay To Match Minimum Wage For Federal Contract Employees

Military pay|| How Much do we get paid

On April 27, 2021, President Biden boldly signed an executive order raising the minimum wage for federal contract employees to $15 per hour. According to the accompanying White House fact sheet, this ensures that hundreds of thousands of workers no longer have to work full time and still live in poverty. In pursuing this laudable goal, the president has effectively made the federal minimum wage for unskilled contractor workers $31,000 a year.

My question is why is the contractor slinging hash in the mess hall making nearly 60 percent more than the private who is willing to risk everything for his country standing in the chow line? Currently, a new enlistee in the armed forces makes $1,650.30 per month, or roughly $19,803 annualized an $11,400 difference. This works out to about $9.52 per hour only if you make the fantastical assumption that new soldiers work only 40 hours a week. It takes a service member serving in the pay grade E-4 with three years of service to make the kind of scratch the dishwasher makes. To fix this, not only does pay for new enlistees need to increase by more than 57 percent, but the raise needs to be applied across the board. You cannot have privates making more than sergeants. Or sergeants more than lieutenants.

Well, now its time to pay their six.

    Electronic Access To Pay Information

MyPay, a web-based service of DFAS, provides up-to-date, round-the-clock pay information for military service members, DoD civilian employees, military retirees and annuitants. Accessed through a personal identification number, the MyPay site also may be used to make address changes, review W-2 forms, or adjust contributions to the military Thrift Savings Program.

Because the service members Leave and Earnings Statement can be viewed through this secure site, many military families find MyPay especially useful during deployments. Service members often provide their PIN information to the spouse who then can access the LES through MyPay. Spouses find they are better able to help manage the familys finances while the service member is away.

How Much Money Do Military Servicemembers Make

Here is a few month by month breakdowns of how much I made in 2018 as a captain in the US military. I won’t go through all 12 months because it doesn’t vary that much.

Pay can vary wildly even within the same branch of the military due to duty location.

BAH, or Basic Allowance for Housing, is an untaxed entitlement paid based on your duty location. It can range from $4000 per month in Hawaii to $900 per month in Oklahoma for the same pay grade.

I also was in a Combat Zone Tax Exclusion area for the entire year of 2018. That meant I paid no federal income taxes on my military income for all of 2018.
