The Navy Commander Behind The Credit Union Banks Love To Hate

When bankers complain to Capitol Hill about the competitive threat posed by large credit unions, they are almost certain to mention Navy Federal Credit Union.

With more than 8 million members, 300 branches nationwide and over $100 billion of assets, Navy Federal is the largest credit union in the world and ranks among the top 50 financial institutions in the country. Its net income in 2018, on which it didnt pay federal or state income tax, was $1.55 billion.

Bankers see the institution as Exhibit A in their fight to get big credit unions to pay taxes, arguing it has swelled in size well past what the founders of the credit union movement intended and continues to hold an unfair advantage over community banks.

Corporate welfare shouldnt be given to a $100 billion institution of any type. Thats not what Congress intended in 1934, when it passed the Federal Credit Union Act, said Alex Sanchez, president and CEO of the Florida Bankers Association.

Yet Navy Federal wasnt always the banker bogeyman it is now.

Just 15 years ago, it was a much smaller organization, with a third of its current number of branches, roughly a fifth of its assets and serving a quarter of the number of members. It served just one branch of the military and didnt offer risk-based pricing, meaning members paid the same rates no matter their credit profile. It had customer service problems, too, with lines at local branches that sometimes stretched around the block.

Which Is Better Usaa Or Navy Federal

USAA and Navy Federal Credit Union serve similar populations, so it is natural to compare the two. Navy Federal has over 300 branch locations, whereas USAA has one. If in-person transactions are important to you, you will be much happier with Navy Federal.

USAA offers better banking products and higher yields for their banking products.

NFCU typically has much more competitive loan rates than USAA and has less stringent loan approval qualifications.

The decision between USAA and Navy Federal is certainly a personal one. If you are trying to get the most bang for your buck and dont mind having money at two different institutions, you might want to try being a member at both.

      Modernizing The Pricing Scheme

Dawsons other far-reaching early decision involved implementation of risk-based lending, which had been resisted by many traditionalists within Navy Federal.

At the time, Navy Federal loans still priced loans identically for all borrowers. The practice harked back to the institutions roots, when it was known as Navy Department Employees Federal Credit Union and operations were mostly confined to the Washington, D.C., area. In the 21st century, however, with more than 2 million members, the practice risked becoming an anachronism.

One of the very first presentations I got was from management on risk-based lending, Dawson said. The top managers all voted for Mary McDuffie,” who was the head of marketing at the time, “to make the presentation. She put it together so logically. I remember thinking after, ‘Weve got to do this.

According to Dawson, one-size-fits-all pricing was turning Navy Federal into a subprime lender with prime pricing. What we were seeing was all our A-plus credit people going somewhere else because they could get a better price. Our credit quality was just driving down to the C and D tiers.

Though the issue seemed open-and-shut for Dawson, the merits of risk-based pricing were less clear to others Chairman John Lockard was opposed, as were many employees.

After he succeeded in winning board approval for the change, Dawson made it his mission to build support within the organization for the new pricing scheme.

Does Navy Federal Have Physical Locations 2022

When I went to college in Pittsburgh, I opened a student checking account at PNC Bank because they had ATMs on campus and a branch down the street. The student checking account was the perfect product for a poor college student. PNC Bank was, to the best of my knowledge, my first business bank account.

Structurally, and dare I say philosophically, they are very different. A credit union is a financial cooperative, owned by the members who have deposits in the bank. A credit union is created for the benefit of its members. All depositors are owners, regardless of balance, and are entitled to vote in elections of board members.

A commercial bank is a for-profit institution, often listed on the stock market. They are owned by shareholders and seek to generate profits for those shareholders. A depositor is simply that, someone who deposits his or her money in the bank. The banks goal is to earn the highest possible return on those deposits.

It Now Operates 10 Branches In North Texas And Is Looking To Expand Again In 2022

      By Natalie Walters

      6:00 AM on Sep 7, 2021 CDT

Big banks get most of the attention, but credit unions have been growing during the pandemic, too, especially the behemoth that is Navy Federal Credit Union.

It has assets totaling $149 billion, triple the size of the second-largest credit union in the U.S., State Employees Credit Union. In the past five years, it has opened 50 new branches for a total of 346 worldwide.

The credit union, formed in 1933, serves members of the military, the U.S. Department of Defense, veterans and family members. It has grown from 3.6 million members to 10.7 million members over the past decade.

Its a really, really large financial institution with a growing reach here and internationally, said Karen Doorway, president and director of research at BauerFinancial, a bank and credit union rating research firm.

The growth story is evident in North Texas, where the Vienna, Va.-based credit union operates 10 branches serving nearly 270,000 members. It opened branches in Mesquite and Burleson this year and plans to open another in Mansfield in the fall.

A credit union is a nonprofit organization that its members own in order to get a better savings rate, lower loan rates and reduced fees. Unlike banks, which are for-profit institutions, credit unions dont pay federal corporate income tax.

Youve got enormous potential membership there, Doorway said. And they often set up near military bases where they can reach the most possible.
