Should I Join the Military After High School?

Joining the Special Forces after 30 is possible, provided your physical abilities are adequate. Green Beret training is intense, so you will need to be capable of all that is asked of you in order to join.

After the age of 36, you will no longer be considered for acceptance in the Special Forces. This, however, is considered a waiverable qualification, so exceptions can be made.

Special Forces soldiers train for most of their careers in order to be able to manage the number of unusual missions they will be expected to complete. The qualifications to join are just the start of an intense military career that will take soldiers places other members of the Army may never go.

Air Force Enlistment And Past Marijuana Use

In the Air Force, anyone who admits to smoking marijuana less than 15 times does not require a waiver. More than 15 times, but fewer than 25 requires a Drug Eligibility Determination. An approved Drug Eligibility Determination is not the same thing as a “waiver,” in that it will not preclude enlistment in most Air Force Jobs. More than 25 uses of marijuana are disqualifying and require a waiver.

As a minimum, recruits will undergo a urinalysis test, when at the Military Entrance Processing Station, for their initial processing, and again when reporting for basic training. The best thing to do before entering the military is to avoid drugs and alcohol altogether, if you have plans to join the service after high school or before you are 21.

      What Is Required To Re

Despite the re-entry code, your type of discharge will greatly impact whether youll be able to get back in as well. There are special prior service placements that youll need to consider as it also depends on whether the branch of service youre trying to join has a position to fill that you can go into.

For example, the Army in recent years primarily has positions to fill in Special Forces, which is an exceptional job. However, requirements are extremely tough for this branch, and if you were in a previous branch of military, or a different MOS , then youre probably going to have to do basic training again, as well as complete Special Forces training. If you do not have to do basic training, youll still have to endure their Special Forces training course. Other branches of service may have different jobs available, but many are similar to this.

There are also age requirements when it comes to prior service, just like there are for new recruit enlistments, even though the age for prior service is often higher than joining the military for the first time. The age limits for prior service to join is as follows:

The unspoken message that the military continues to convey is that war is for men and women should stay away. Half of all women in the military are assigned to traditional roles such as cooking, nursing, and secretarial duties.

Rape and sexual harassment occur frequently in the armed forces. One report stated that 64 percent of women in the military have experienced sexual harassment. Often men use rank to try to get sexual favors. Women who refused to comply have been labeled lesbians.

      Advance In Your Career

In year five, you have a decision to make. You can move ahead in your Army career by getting more advanced education and training. If so, you will prepare for higher levels of responsibility, leadership, and specialization required as commanders. Eventually, you will select a career field and may even go on to earn a graduate degree from a leading civilian university.

The Army pays for all of your training, travel, and advanced education. You could eventually work in the Pentagon, command a large troop unit, or serve as a military attaché in a foreign country.

The other option is choose to complete your commitment and return to civilian life.

      Maximum Age For Military Enlistment

Across the United States Armed Forces, the maximum age for enlistment for someone who has never served in the military before depends on the branch. For the Army, the maximum age is 35. For the Navy, age waivers start at 34-years-old. For the Air Force, the maximum age allowed to join is 39-years-old. The Marines have the lowest maximum age for regular military service at 28-years-old. Special Operations branches also have different maximum ages due to the physical challenges put upon the candidates compared to regular military service. These maximum ages can be waived if the recruit has the education, skills, experience that the military needs to fill its ranks. The same holds true for the Special Operations communities, where waivers are available, but only on a case by case basis and typically approved or disapproved by the commanding officer of the selection program or the community manager/detailer.

Often the age waivers that do get approved are those in the professional jobs fields .

The maximum age of non-prior service enlistment under Federal Law was 35-years-old. In 2006, the Army asked Congress to raise the age limit to 44-years-old. Congress did not approve this change, but raised the maximum enlistment age from 35 to 42.

Regardless of Federal Law, the military services are allowed to impose more strict standards, and many of them have. The maximum age for non-prior service enlistments for each service is:

Us Army Height & Weight Requirements For Current Soldiers

Why do we include height and weight guidelines for currently serving troops in an article discussing enlistment standards? Because as mentioned above, it wont be long before the recruit is tested again for body composition after going on active duty. These issues are a career-long concern for all soldiers.

Previous iterations of AR-900 have included statements directed at currently serving soldiers that most today would consider to be derogatory. The 1986 version goes so far as to state, Excessive body fat connotes a lack of personal discipline, detracts from military appearance, may indicate a poor state of health, physical fitness, or stamina .

The above statement from the 1986 edition doesnt take into account medical issues or other factors that may inform the diagnosis of an individual person as overweight.

Language in the 2019 revision of AR-900 takes a far more nuanced approach, stating, Soldiers are subject to many demands and challenges that may impact individual readiness. The Army Body Composition Program provides commanders a systematic approach to enforce military standards across the unit while offering troops with the resources they need to return to an optimum level of individual readiness.

The U.S. Army has the following requirements for height and weight for those currently serving:

Any soldier failing to meet body fat standards after six months from date of entry to active service will be entered in the ABCP.

      Army Or Civilian Career

Whether you choose to remain in the Army after your five-year commitment is a decision you do not need to make now.

West Point graduates are highly sought after. Those choosing a civilian career have attained great success in different professionsas doctors, CEOs of major companies, and engineers the possibilities are endless.

Graduates who pursue an Army career do so because they feel the commitment and satisfaction of serving their country. The Army family takes care of its own during active duty and upon retirement after 20 years of service, you receive a generous guaranteed pension and reduced medical care for life, plus many other benefits.

What Can I Do If I Am Found To Be Ineligible To Join The Army

In many cases, ineligibility means you will not be able to join in the Army or other military branches. However, in some circumstances the Army will provide waivers to help ensure potential recruits are able to join and serve. For questions about specific Army waivers and your potential eligibility, talk to a local recruiter to learn more about available options.

Former president Park Chung-hee introduced exemptions for athletes in 1973 in an effort to win more medals for the country some historians believe the athletics also served as a distraction against the government’s unpopularity. After winning a gold medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics, wrestler Yang Jung-mo was granted the first exemption. In the 1980s, president Chun Doo-hwan promised exemptions to any athlete who won a medal in either the 1986 Asian Games or the 1988 Summer Olympics.

When South Korea co-hosted the FIFA World Cupin 2002, their national team was guaranteed an exemption if they reached the round of 16 the same promise was made to the national baseball team in 2006 if the team reached semifinals in the World Baseball Classic. Public outrage ensued, and similar exemptions have been rarely granted since.

E-sport competitors are not exempt from conscription.

A total of 220 exemptions were granted from 2008 to 2018.

      Getting Your Dream Job

The Army has more than 200 enlisted jobs to choose from. The Army is unique among all of the active duty services, in that every single enlistment contract includes a guarantee for training in a specific MOS . The other services have “guaranteed jobs,” as well, but also enlist many recruits into “guaranteed fields,” in which they won’t find out their specific job until basic training.

The Army is also the only active duty service in which an applicant can “pre-reserve” a job/enlistment program, right in the recruiter’s office, prior to going to the Military Entrance Processing Station . Army recruiters have access to a system called FSR2 or “Future Soldier Remote Reservations System.” Any applicant that is a high school senior in good standing or a graduate of high school may pick their job off of the “Request” system from the recruiting station, as long as they “pre-qualify” for enlistment. They then have seven days to go to MEPS, take the physical and then do the final signing for that job. The system also provides a shipping date for the job enlistment bonus/college fund amounts authorized for that job, etc. Of course, the job isn’t “guaranteed” at this point. The applicant has to meet the qualifications for the job , which will be determined during the MEPS trip.

Age Requirements Are Supplemented By Education Requirements

In most cases, the minimum age a new recruit may enter military service is 17 . However, a high school diploma or GED is usually required. Some branches of service may, depending on recruiting issues at any given time, offer alternatives such as allowing a new recruit who has a GED with college credits. Having a GED may subject the enlistee to additional standards not applied to those who have high school diplomas.

If the applicant does not meet the stricter standards for GED holders without college coursework, it may be possible to enroll in college to earn additional credit hours. This may be required by the branch of service applied for so you will need to try again under different standards.
