Complete The Benning Phase
Once you are finally in Ranger School, you will need to pass all three phases to successfully become a ranger. The first phase is the Benning Phase, which will test physical stamina, mental toughness, and tactical fundamentals needed for the follow-on phases. In the Benning phase, the enrolled students have to go through the Ranger Assessment Phase, also known as RAP week, and the Patrolling Phase, commonly referred to as the Darby Phase.
The US Army conducts this phase at Camp Rogers on Fort Benning. During their time at Camp Rogers, students first go through Ranger Physical Assessment . They then perform the Combat Water Survival Assessment at Victory Pond, followed by a night and day land navigation test. Last is the Malvesti Confidence Course which includes the worm pit.
During the Darby phase, students receive fast-paced instruction on troop leading procedures, demolitions, fieldcraft, the principles of patrolling, demolitions, and basic battle drills. Finally, students must succeed in the Darby Queen Obstacle Course, which stretches over a mile of hilly terrain.

Fighting The Urge To Quit
The mountains seem to be taking a toll on one of the platoons oldest members, Julio Dominguez, 31, who has yet to receive a go on a graded leadership position. With each passing day, the mental stress will increase on those who arent yet sure theyll move on to Swamp Phase. Most students I talk to agree that the psychological difficulties of the course eclipse the physical demands.
Dominguez is no stranger to challenges, having joined the Army in his early twenties, hoping to escape Puerto Ricos struggling economy and experience something bigger and better. He has two young children at home, and though hes a veteran of three deployments, saying goodbye to them has only gotten harder. Still, hes committed to doing whatever it takes to keep my family afloat, which right now means overcoming the previous nights hour and a half of sleep. Its during the seemingly endless, freezing mountain nights, Dominguez says, when you pretty much want to cry and lay down and not wake up. Everything possible is going through your mindthe pain, fatigue, wanting to quit. The only thing that stopped me was looking around at the rest of these miserable SOBs.
The sun sets, the temperature drops fast, and the mission continues to be a mess. The platoon staggers down the road, casualties assessed by the RIs during the mock firefight slung over their shoulders. One exhausted student drops a classmate before mumbling an apology. An RI asks, Is anyone controlling this? No answer.
Attend Advanced Individual Training School
Passing boot camp and basic combat training arent enough to get accepted into Ranger School. Once enlisted, you should attend an advanced individual training school to learn specific skills youll need, including learning how to carry out combat patrol missions, advanced combat arms functional skills, or mobility training. Although this is not a necessary step, it can increase your chances of getting accepted into Ranger School.

Airborne School 3 Weeks
Upon completion of Infantry OSUT, the candidate will need to qualify for Airborne school. You can find the qualifications here.
In Airborne School, the would-be Ranger is not under nearly as much restriction as he was in basic training. He can contact his family members and have fun on the weekends, but hes still in an intensive school aimed at teaching him something pretty dangerous jumping out of airplanes.
This is static-line jumping, where the chutes ripcord is essentially attached the airplane itself its much less technical than free-falling. Some might even argue that three weeks for this school is a little excessive.
Attrition rates: moderate to low. The physical standards get a few people right out the gate , but most people attempting have had time to prepare. Some people fail due to technical portions in the first few weeks, and a few more get injured during the jumps. Still, most Ranger-candidates will have no problem passing Airborne school.
Conversations With A Higher Power
The night known as DogEx gets its name from a special treat for the students: hot dogs. Before that they have to fill out peer evaluations, in which theyre ordered to rank their squad mates from best to worst. Would you share a foxhole with this person? theyre asked, a question that helps eliminate people who are insufferable. Then comes this: Would you go to combat with this person?
If someone is ranked low by enough of their peers, he or she can be forced to recycle or be dropped outright. This makes for a peculiar atmosphere during DogExmore muted relief than celebration, because its hard to be animated around someone whose dreams you may have just crushed.
The students who already know theyre heading to Florida dig into paper bags containing a soda, two hot dogs, chips, and a candy bar. Observing the ferocious consumption, an RI says, Thats why I carry a gun. The average human is only three missed meals away from becoming a savage.
A cold rain begins to fall as the RIs call the students over for mail. Isaac Chalcraft, 20, an upbeat man who overcame a childhood marked by crime and drugs, jokes, Im not getting any mail. My family doesnt love me. He says he wrote his father several times but never got a response.
Sitting by himself, he cried for a moment before saying a silent prayer to God and my girlfriend. This led to an overwhelming feeling of warmth and strength that got him through.

A look at the grueling training soldiers must complete to receive the coveted black-and-yellow tab.
Until this week, there was one very important requirement for becoming an Army Ranger: You had to be a man.
On Friday, Captain Kristen Griest and First Lieutenant Shaye Haver became the first women to earn the coveted black-and-yellow tab when they graduated from the U.S. Army Ranger School alongside 94 male soldiers.
Griest and Havers graduation is the latest in a series of firsts for women in the U.S. military. In January 2013, the Defense Department opened to women thousands of military jobs that were previously only available to men. Six months later, the Pentagon announced it would allow women in front-line combat roles by 2016. And two days ago, the Navys top admiral said there is no reason why women cannot train to become Navy SEALs.
Critics of allowing women into Ranger training have said the Army is lowering its standards. But Army spokespeople have said repeatedly that Griest and Haver were subject to the same requirements as their male peers.
No woman that I know wanted to go to Ranger School if they change the standards, because then it degrades what the tab means, Griest told reporters Thursday.
Heres the advice the military gives soldiers who are thinking about attending:
Now, so can she.
