What Skills Can Doctors Gain From Working In The Army That They Can Use Elsewhere

So You Want to Be a MILITARY DOCTOR [Ep. 5]

The army offers a slightly different brand of medicine. I speak largely from the perspective of general practice, which, as with most other specialties, focuses on the core skills you would expect to develop in an NHS practice.

We look after soldiers and often their families, but owing to the nature of our work in diverse environments, many doctors are able to have a more portfolio career. This may include sports and rehabilitation medicine occupational or aviation medicine travel, expedition, diving, and altitude medicine medical education disaster and conflict medicine clinical leadership and pre-hospital emergency care. We are often able to develop these to postgraduate diploma or masters level, and in other branches of military medicine there are similar opportunities.

All doctors also find themselves with responsibility for developing other health professionals, from training soldiers and supervising combat medical technicians to specialty training, education, and research. We gain leadership development and often have responsibility for planning medical support to sports events, expeditions, overseas exercises, and operations.

Seven What Does A Military Nurse Do

Military nurses carry out similar responsibilities as traditional nurses in hospital or outpatient facilities. Upon arriving at their assigned area, military nurses may check in with their direct supervisors and perform care in a particular setting. If nurses are delegated to work in a hospital or clinic, common responsibilities include patient assessment, passing medications, and working with other healthcare professionals.

Patients in these settings are commonly military personnel, their families, or any other military employees in local support roles such as diplomats and educators.

In areas of active war, military nurses may serve to triage patients or stabilize and treat patients with life-threatening injuries, like wounds from explosives and gunshots.

What Is The Pay Like For A Doctor Working In The Army

How to become a Military Doctor in 3 Steps

Pay is similar to that in civilian practice. There are also financial incentives available to those who wish to join either as students or fully qualified doctors. Medical officers can get a bonus of £50000 once they complete a year of probation. There are all sorts of other perks you get as an armed forces member, such as a generous pension and annual leave and cheaper train tickets.

Many army colleagues are reservists who enjoy the best of both worlds. For as little as 19 days commitment a year, GPs, nurses, and a whole range of other medical professionals are practising their roles in a refreshing environment that complements their civilian training. They also receive the same pay as they would while in their civilian role if they are deployed.

Join The Military Service Of Your Choosing

Now that you have finished medical school, your service in the military can finally begin. Military doctors must be US citizens aged between 21 and 64 and commit to serving for at least two years on active duty.

To join the military, you will have to pass specific requirements. First, your minimum GPA should be 3.0 and minimum MCAT score of 500, with additional points for volunteer work and leadership roles.

Applicants will then take a physical exam. HPSP applicants will take their physical at a Military Entrance Processing Station, while USUHS applicants will take theirs through the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board.

During this time, the applicants should also pass security investigations as well as exhibit the high moral standards required of military physicians and commissioned officers.

Once you pass the requirements of the military branch of your choosing, you will then sign a contract which often includes a minimum number of years in service.

You are then matched to a military residency, where you will work at a military healthcare facility. You will be an active duty physician with pay equivalent to that of a captain in the Army or lieutenant in the Navy.

Do note that as a military medical student, you can choose your specialty, but you may not get the residency that you want. This is especially true when it comes to competitive residencies.

What Did You Do Before Joining The Military

Before joining the military, I was a student at the University of South Carolina Upstate in Spartanburg, SC. I had excellent professors that taught me all throughout my undergraduate career. I graduated USC Upstate December 15, 2015, studied for the NCLEX and passed in January of 2016.

In February of 2016, I moved from SC to Rochester, MN. I had accepted a new grad position in the Medical/Surgical ICU at the Mayo Clinic. It was there at the Mayo Clinic that I began my true nursing career.

The immense knowledge and guidance I received was far beyond what I could have expected as a new graduate. It was during the year of 2016 that I also was presented with an opportunity to join the Air Force. This opportunity came sooner than expected but I was thankful!

After a long application process and with the help of a recruiter, I found out I was accepted into the Air Force Nurse Corp in the beginning of 2017.

After working over a year and a half at Mayo Clinic, I said goodbye to the best hospital foundation I could have had a new graduate.

Beginning in Aug of 2017 I completed my five-week training course at Maxwell AFB in Alabama and from that point on I have been Active Duty in the operational Air Force as a Critical Care Nurse!
