Can You Tell Us About Your Background Working With Veterans Who Are Attending College

How to get college credit for military & work experience

I started working with veterans at Endicott College in 2012. We had several students who had to stop classes due to feeling suicidal. These were my brightest, funniest, and most engaged students â but they were struggling. Veterans Affairs reported in 2014 that the rate of suicide among male veterans was 37 per 100,000. This number has slowly gone up over the years. Both of my grandfathers served in the military, and they both committed suicide. With my brother and father also being veterans, I felt genuinely dedicated to making a difference. Endicott College has a long tradition of serving veterans and military students and I knew there was something more that we could do to serve our students and help support their transition to civilian life.

In 2014, Endicott College brought the Veterans Initiative Towards Academic Leadership to campus. This project coordinates VA services for Endicott College veterans â social work, academic support, and peer tutoring. In 2015, we founded a veterans club to bring more community to this group of students they became a chapter of the Student Veterans of America in 2016. We also began a VA work study in 2016 as a way to integrate more opportunities for our veteran students to earn money while being full-time students. Additionally, this will be the second year we run a 3 credit class that helps military students translate their military leadership skills to the academic setting.

Are You Asking The Tough Questions

Be sure to research each of the schools that interest you. Call them and ask questions. If a school makes your short list plan a visit so you can see first hand the facilities and the individuals who will be taking care of your child. If you read school reviews online do so with skepticism and consider the source. Many are wildly exaggerated.

Here are a few questions you should ask:

  • What is your policy on smoking, drugs, and alcohol?
  • Is your school accredited and by whom?
  • What are your graduation requirements?
  • What extra-curricular activities are available to students?
  • What advanced courses are available?
  • To which colleges do students usually matriculate?
  • Are college and career counseling available?
  • What qualifications must your teachers meet?
  • What is a students typical day?
  • What do students do on the weekends?
  • How do you identify and help students who are not meeting academic expectations?

Scholarships And Financial Aid

In addition to federal tuition assistance and GI Bill benefits, active-duty service members can pursue funding from organizations such as the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Many organizations sponsor scholarships for enlisted personnel and veterans.

Degree-seekers planning to enlist after graduation may qualify for Reserve Officers’ Training Corps scholarships. These awards pay up to full tuition for qualifying ROTC members.

Learners attending one of the best online colleges for military degree-seekers can also apply for private scholarships and grants. Many organizations offer merit-based and need-based aid for military students. Application deadlines and requirements vary by award.

What Are The Three Most Important Attributes Or Characteristics A Veteran Should Consider When Selecting A University Experience And Why

  • Reputation – It is important to consider the university’s academic reputation, employer outreach, and support system for veterans.
  • Veteran Support – Look for a university with a veteran’s affairs office on campus. At Rutgers, there is an Office of Veteran and Military Programs and Services. Ann Treadaway and her superior leadership team support student veterans with a variety of programs.
  • Diversity – Consider a university that supports and encourages diversity and inclusion. Rutgers University is the most diverse academic institution I have attended in my entire academic career, and that was important to me.

How Important Is A University’s Sense Of Community For Veterans When Deciding On A College

A university with a solid sense of community can only help a returning service member in completing their studies and graduating. In the four years I have been teaching at my institution, all of the veteran students in my curriculum have graduated or are on track to finish their studies. A veteran’s shared experience goes a long way. Moreover, it is an excellent networking opportunity for them to meet other veterans and non-veterans.

What Beneficial Internal Military Programs Do You See Taken Advantage Of Most Often How Do They Impact A Veteran’s Education

When I was in active duty, I took several âmail orderâ college courses which boosted my confidence in being able to handle college-level material. This resulted in earning credits that transferred to my college of choice. Nowadays, active-duty personnel can often take online courses and may take courses on college campuses when they are close enough to their duty station. I think this helps tremendously with building confidence and preparing them for full-time college work.

Increase Your Chances Of Post

Many companies across a number of industries often consider military veterans for positions over applicants without military service. But if you also add a college degree to your resume, this combination of service in the military and college education can be tough for prospective employers to pass up.

Thats why you can increase your chances of finding gainful employment in a field you will enjoy. To further this point, the number of job interviews youll have to do should also be a bit less than what it might be for those without a college degree.

Benefits Of Attending A Military College

A Citadel military education offers students extraordinary benefits not found in the ordinary college experience. Whatever career, military or otherwise, a student plans to pursue, attending a military college provides a foundation of leadership and confidence that lasts a lifetime.

For those desiring to serve in the military, the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps at The Citadel is one of the best in the nation and equips cadets with the essential skills to become military officers. Approximately 1 in 3 cadets earns a commission into the United States Armed Forces upon graduation.

However, since military service after graduation is not a requirement, students choosing a Citadel military education gain experiences and assets that extend far beyond their college years.

Character development and principled leadership permeate all aspects of cadet life. The Krause Center for Leadership and Ethics oversees a four-year leader development model which integrates leadership training into the cadet curriculum and teaches cadets the value of integrity and moral character in everyday life. Cadets live their lives according to The Citadels honor code, and they learn the importance of ethical behavior in all their endeavors. Through an emphasis on character, selfless service and the discipline to face challenges and persevere, The Citadel molds individuals into leaders.

Whats The Minimum Age To Attend Military School

Every military school in the United States has its own acceptance requirements. The norm is between the grades of 6 to 8. So that would place students between the ages of 12 and 15. It does depend on the academy.

In the United States, most regions of it require children between the ages of 6 and 16 to receive a formal education. Parents are allowed to force their child to a military school if they make the demand.

Getting Into Senior Military Colleges

Generally, when applying to SMCs, you have to submit an application, personal essay, transcript, and standardized test scores. Youll be evaluated on your academic performance and extracurricular achievements.

The selectivity of the SMCs varies, but generally, if you meet their average GPA and standardized test scores, you have a good chance of getting accepted. Virginia Tech has an average GPA of 3.66, an average ACT score of 27, and accepts 65% of applicants. The Citadel has an average GPA of 3.6, an average ACT score of 23, and accepts 75% of applicants.

SMCs that give you the option whether or not to join the Corps of Cadets have different application procedures. At Texas A& M, you have to be accepted to the university as a regular student before you join the Corps of Cadets. At Virginia Tech, you indicate on your application if youre intending to join the Corps. However, if you end up deciding not to join after stating your intention to do so, your application will be reevaluated.

One common misconception is that every cadet and midshipman came to a service academy right out of high school. That’s just not the case. We already discussed the prep-school route, which funnels young men and women into the service academies one or more years after they graduate from high school. But every year there are also a fair number of other people entering the academies who reapplied after they were rejected the first time around. They followed their backup plan, worked hard to improve their weaknesses and dove headfirst into the application process again. “If you’re worth going to and you don’t get in the first time, prove them wrong,” Sawyer Neal insists. “Show them how bad you want to serve, and that you deserve to be there. And the way you do that is by putting in lots of hard work and reapplying.”

“If you apply the first year, you don’t get in, and you go to a school that has a ROTC unit, I implore you to go into that and give it your all there as you reapply,” Neal advises. He believes his ROTC experience is going to give him an advantage during his plebe year at the Naval Academy because he already knows “the basic knowledge that they’re going to be teaching everyone this summer,” he has experience working “hand-in-hand with staff sergeants and gunnery sergeants,” and he’s used to getting “yelled at and intimidated by men who have served 20-plus years in the military.”

How Online College Worked For This Military Family

Military colleges offer a combination of military instruction and higher education. Attending a military college can give you the opportunity to get a college education and a military job after getting your degree some military colleges even require you to serve in the military after graduation.

As I mentioned above, military colleges can be separated into service academies, Senior Military Colleges, and Military Junior Colleges.

There’s A Lot More To The Application Process Than Just The Application

Courtesy Air Force Academy

When compared to traditional colleges, the service academy application process is “just a different animal” and “on a different level,” according to Seth Swain. Both civilian schools and the academies require you to submit SAT/ACT scores, high school transcripts, letters of recommendation, writing samples and the like. However, the service academies also make you get a nomination, take a physical fitness test, pass a medical exam and go on interviews. “The service academy application process is definitely a lot more stressful, a lot more time-consuming and a little more grueling” because of these extra steps, said Dominique Basso, who is attending the Merchant Marine Academy. Plus, there are no “common applications” for the service academies. If you’re applying to more than one academy, you must submit a separate application for each one.

Don’t get discouraged by the application process, though. “There were so many times that I was on the verge of quitting,” the Air Force Academy’s Kayla Phillips confesses. She believes the academies make the process “long and annoying to weed out the kids who don’t want to be there or don’t have the determination or perseverance to be there.”
