What Should A Young Person Know And Consider Before Joining The Military

What You Should Know Before You Join The Military !!

Doug Dingus, Quora user

The single most important thing to know is you give up your rights. Not all of them, and not in all places and times, but enough to seriously change how you can conduct yourself. G.I. stands for “Government Issue,” and you are a resource in the strictest sense of the word. If you are the kind of person who values basic liberties, or who doesn’t conform well, this will be a significant matter to deal with.

There aren’t generally any “outs.” Once you’ve done it, you’ve done it. Reconsideration doesn’t come around again until after your term of service.

I have been enlisted in the past, for what it’s worth.

That said, I’ll put some good and bad things down, closing with some advice aimed at those seriously considering enlistment.

Good things:

You absolutely will end up in peak shape. The benefits last years.

You will garner some basic deportment that others pick up on. Little things, like “the walk,” or how you assess a room will change in subtle ways. Others, who have been in military service, can see it. These changes also have nice benefits that last for a long time, if not a lifetime. In business/professional settings, you will be seen as capable, not a slacker, and it’s on a basic level.

Your self-confidence will improve, as will your ability to just do it, as those two things are strongly emphasized.

If you seek advanced training, you could get some very marketable skills.

Bad things:

So then, the advice:

Ten Signs That Prove You Are Ready To Serve In The Military

One of my number one pieces of advice to people often is not to join the military simply because you have completed high school or junior college or completed your college degree. Join when you are ready.

This means that you should not put an arbitrary date in your head to leave. Make sure that date coincides with you being fully prepared to endure whatever challenges lie ahead of you. You may ask, “How will I know that I am ready?”

Here is a top 10 list of signs to know when you are ready:

1. Reducing weaknesses: You first need to find what your weaknesses are physically. Are you a strength athlete who thinks long-distance running is anything more than 100 yards? Are you an endurance athlete who never has lifted weights or cranked out double-digit pull-ups? Here are Common Weaknesses you may not even know you have.

2. Can you crush the entry fitness test? Getting to any training requires you to pass a fitness test. You can be in the zone of barely passing with the minimum standards, or you can be in the group that maximizes the standards. These tests are a decent predictor of success at tactical training programs in our government.

4. No naps: Long workouts and working the rest of the day is a typical training day for all tactical professions. There are no nap times. Many people who have the time in their schedule will work out for a few hours, eat, take a nap, eat, work out again, eat, maybe take another nap and that is their preparation day.

Frequently Asked Questions I Get About Dating A Military Man

Can you date while in the military?

Of course! You may not be able to go on a date while youre on deployment or training, but of course, you can have a significant other

Do military relationships move fast?

They can at times, but they dont have to. Sometimes couples get engaged and then married quickly because of an upcoming deployment or duty station move. In the eyes of military, you must be married in order for your spouse to come with you. My boyfriend and I were together for years before we got married. So military relationships can move as fast or as slow as youd like.

Can two enlisted service members marry?

In short, yes!

Can you live with your boyfriend in the military?

This really depends on the base he is stationed at. At some bases single service members are required to live in the barracks. And if that is the case, spouses cannot stay there. At other bases, single service members are allowed to live off base, and if they are off base, you can live with them. Once youre married, you can get a house on base.

Can service members have cell phones on deployment?

Really depends on a multitude of factors. In my past experience, my service member did not have a cell phone while deployed. Things are always changing, so I would take that on a case-by-case basis with your service member.

But He Said He Loves You And Wants To Marry Youeven Though You Met Last Week

Im assuming if youre falling for this, youve never been in a military town. Go downtown in a military town to a club one night and let me know how many single soldiers are there looking for the love of their life.not exactly what their goal is. And when youre thousands of miles away from each other, he doesnt have the opportunity to sleep with you. So the point would be???

Many of these stories contain comments about him saying he loves you within a few days/weeks of starting to talk or he wants to marry you as soon as he returns. Lets get this straight you havent met and certainly havent had the opportunity to have any kind of physical relationship, yet he wants to marry you? Does this sound feasible to you? If youre even hesitating on the answer, Ill help you. Its not. Theyre lying so they can get in your wallet. And theyre doing this to many others at the same time theyre doing it to you. Its just who is going to open up access to their bank account first.

But you asked him if he was a scammer and he said no!

Come on, think about this! Why would he admit it to you? Or even better, he told you he is in fact a scammer but he REALLY loves you..as long as you keep sending him money.

He hasnt asked for money yet though

History And Current Medical Requirements

Previously, any person with a history of asthma was immediately disqualified from joining the military regardless of age. However, in 2014, the Department of Defense revised its policy and only disqualified those who still have asthma beyond the age of 13 years.

An older study from 2008 proved that people with a childhood history of asthma did not contribute significantly to military attrition or hospitalizations due to asthma.

Although the requirements for waiver application are the same for all branches, below are some specific guidelines that each branch has set.

Armed Conflict Breaks Out Between Russia And Ukraine

Earlier in the day, President Zelenskyy called on Russia to end its attack on Ukraine.

It wasnt Ukraine that chose the path of war, but Ukraine is offering to go back to the path of peace, he said.

Zelensnkyy added that the Russian aerial attack at Hostomel airport just outside Kyiv was stopped. He noted that a number of Russian aircraft and armoured vehicles have been destroyed, but did not offer specifics.

Ukraines second-largest city, Kharkiv, just 20 kilometres from the Russian border is in a difficult situation, according to Zelenskyy. In the northern part of the country, Russians are moving towards Chernihiv, he confirmed.

Ukraine officials also said they had lost control of the decommissioned Chernobyl nuclear power plant, scene of the worlds worst nuclear disaster, after Russian troops seized it.

The White House expressed outrage at credible reports from Ukrainian officials that staff at the plant have been taken hostage by Russian troops.

Press secretary Jen Psaki said the U.S. had no assessment on the state of the plant where radioactivity is still leaking decades after the worst nuclear disaster in history. But she said hostage taking could hamper efforts to maintain the nuclear facility and was incredibly alarming and greatly concerning.

With the attacking forces moving fast, Zelenskyy added that world leaders need to move and quickly.

The Ukrainian military claimed it had shot down six Russian planes and one helicopter over its Luhansk region.

What Is The Delayed Entry Program And Can I Get Out Of It

US MILITARY PAY (All Branches) Everything You Need to Know

Information current as of March 2018

NOTE: If your US citizenship is conditional upon serving in the US military, your status could be affected by ANY separation or discharge from the military. We encourage service members in this situation to contact an immigration attorney for assistance and advice. You can request free legal counsel from the American Immigration Lawyers Association Military Assistance Program.

Most people who enlist join through the Delayed Entry Program sometimes called the Future Soldiers Program. This allows someone to sign up for the military prior to the date when they will ship out for initial training. People in the DEP are unpaid and are not subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice, UCMJ.

After Joining the DEP, Some People change their Minds. During the delay before leaving for basic training some people feel they were pressured into something they werent sure about. Others have life changesperhaps they decide to go to college, get married, or they get their dream job. They no longer wish to be locked into years of military service. Because the DEP is the easiest phase to get out of the military, it a critical time for anyone having second thoughts to give serious consideration to whether they truly belong in the military.

Military time is not only used by the military, but is also used by law enforcement and hospitals. Military time is used to record time more accurately since it is divided into 24 hours. If you want to know how to tell military time, just follow these easy steps.

You Are On Call 24/7 Even When You’re Not

Ever wonder why service members tell time differently? For example, it’s not 11 p.m., it’s 2300 hrs. This is because war never sleeps. Those who think otherwise have another thing coming. Battle is about maneuvering units and materials at a moment’s notice to secure a tactical advantage. This can easily happen at night, and it can easily make no sense to you.

No matter what your rank or specialization, the Army can wake you up at 0200 hrs and make you guard a port-o-potty in the middle of nowhere, thousands of miles from any national security threat. The only items you might have to protect yourself will be a broom and a canteen. You’ll have no say in the matter, and nobody is required to explain anything to you.

You’re not even safe when you’re on vacation. Oh, didn’t you know that the Army considers weekends and holidays to be vacation days? That fact came as a shock to me. When you go on vacation, you are expected to fill out a lot more paperwork than you would at a typical company in the private sector. The Army wants to know every detail regarding your whereabouts when you’re on vacationâincluding the hotel you’ll be staying in.

Why? In case of a national emergency, the Army has to know where you are so it can summon you if they need you. Even if you are far from your base, you may be contacted to report to a closer one. This is highly unlikely, but it is a soldier’s responsibility.

The Army Is Not Adult Daycarethis Misconception Gets People Killed

One of the things I despise most is the idea that the Army serves the soldier. The Army doesn’t serve you you serve your country by joining the Army. Fortunately, there are very few people that believe this because Basic Combat Training does an outstanding job of smoking that idea out of recruits’ heads. But still, people who think of the Army as an adult daycare facility are out there making life for other soldiers far worse and sometimes more dangerous. Immature people who misunderstand the purpose of the Army usually want access to the Army’s benefits without understanding the sacrifices and responsibilities associated with serving.

Even though the Army does have benefits that help soldiers and families throughout their lives, these benefits are not available anywhere else, so it makes sense for civilians to join the military to get them. But those benefits are not what I’m talking about. In fact, if you serve, I highly recommend that you get involved in all the beneficiary programs you can. Doing so will enable you to be a better soldier now and a better civilian afterwards.

What I am talking about is the idea that the Army is just a job that’s impossible to get fired from or a steady source of income for anyone who can twiddle his thumbs and stay out of sight. Usually, I don’t care what people think. However, this kind of attitude usually leads to a sub-par performance.

Earn Respect And Admiration From Your Peers

I cant tell you how often my friends introduce me to others by mentioning my service in the Army.

Almost always, I get the same reaction.

Wow. Thats really admirable of you.

I never brag about it, but, to be honest, it always feels good to hear.

Not to mention, everyone always wants to buy me a beer.

The Air Force Isnt For You If:

If youre looking to be in the infantry, a combat related role or more enlistment incentives for when you join, you may want to look elsewhere as the Air Force is one of the most competitive branches in the U.S. military.

Still want to join? Then make sure you have a really high ASVAB score especially a technical score. That will help you increase your chances of being accepted into the Air Force and getting the MOS you want.

Phase : Detachment And Withdrawal

In the final days leading up to your service members deployment, your family may start to close down emotionally, or avoid emotions altogether.

Couples Even though you and your service member might be racing the clock to get everything in order before their departure, try not to use your laundry list of tasks to avoid one another. Dont be surprised if you want them to just leave already. Its normal to want to rip the Band-Aid off and just get on with it, as the anticipation often can lead to anxiety.

Children Depending on your childs age, they may be confused or angry around this period of time. Some military kids become upset with the parent who is deploying, and others might feel as though they did something to make their deploying parent want to leave. Give children the opportunity to be part of the process, especially on the day of the departure. It might be tempting to leave them with a baby-sitter to avoid the hassle or spare their feelings, however, try to include them as much as possible through each step of the deployment.
