Banks For Federal Employees

Navy Federal Credit Union

Although both types of institutions offer similar products and services, credit unions aren’t always better than banks. Shop around to make sure you get the right fit for your needs. Some banks charge fees for having an account, and most will accept anybody as a customer, though there are exceptions.

For some government employees, USAA Bank is a good option. It’s popular among military families, and the bank consistently gets good reviews for customer service and competitive rates. Joining USAA Bank requires that you are active military, former military, cadets or midshipmen, or family of those individuals.

Opening A Credit Union Account

To open an account at a credit union, you’ll need to qualify as a memberas described above. In some cases, that’s as easy as donating to an organization associated with the credit union. When you become a member of the organization by donating, you become eligible to become a credit union member as well.

Next, you’ll need to provide basic information about yourself, such as your Social Security Number, physical address, and a valid government identification document.

Finally, you’ll open a “share” account, which officially makes you a member. In many cases, this means you have to maintain a minimum deposit balance between $5 and $20, which the credit union will set aside for the duration of your membership.

Navy Federal has several types of checking accounts, so you may find one that’s a good fit. Pentagon Federal Credit Union only has one checking account â but it’s a high-yield checking account, which you might decide you like.

Applying To Nfcu Through Deceased Family Member

wrote:I am eligible to join NFCU through my grandfather who served in the Navy for 9 years. Unfortunately he passed away last year so I cannot have him join and I don’t believe he was ever a member.I submitted a membership application over the phone earlier today, but I am wondering about the chances of them coming back and asking for additional documentation. I had several pieces of imformation about him ready to provide, but she didn’t even ask his name.I am only concerned because I am not certain I will be able to obtain his DD214. My father passed away a few years ago and my aunt and I are not on speaking terms. However, my maiden name is the same as his last name and I am listed in his obituary and I have other things I can provide.Thoughts on my chances?

I had no problem joining at the end of December. My grandfather passed away in Feb 2017. I joined and they didn’t ask any info. I don’t have any of his military info readily available. I’ve since added a CLOC, cashRewards card and yesterday just got approved for an auto-refi.

Great App With Even Better Service

Apply for a loan online navy federal

I use both Bank of America and NFCU, and NFCUs mobile app and overall customer support combined with integration with the app is completely seamless and eons ahead of BoA. The NFCU app has an extremely user friendly interface, and I love that it has direct links to customer service chat and call. Overall its security and banking-tech integration is fantastic. There was an example of a time I forgot my PIN to my card and after speaking with a representative she informed me that I was actually able to reset my PIN directly through the app. In comparison for BoA I can only reset my PIN by going in person to the bank during their working hours, which obviously poises a challenge for customers with 9-5 workdays. I am so impressed with the apps highly secure, detailed and user friendly interface. Even today when I went to make multiple payments to my credit card, it prompted me with a screen checking if I knew I was making multiple payments. I really appreciate developers high attention to detail and clear care to make NFCU customers experience using the app as positive, secure, accurate and responsive as possible. Thanks NFCU! Amazing service as always.

Navy Fed Ends A Backdoor Way To Qualify For Membership

Last December I reported on a little-known way to qualify for Navy Federal Credit Union membership. This backdoor to Navy Fed membership has been closed. The backdoor involved joining the Navy League, San Diego Council and then going through a special Navy Fed membership application process. This weekend I confirmed the closure of this backdoor with a Navy Fed membership service rep in an online chat session:

Ken: Can one join navy league of San Diego and become eligible to join NFCU?

Rep: Unfortunately, no. We had a membership change.

In December, I had speculated that this backdoor may not last. As the largest credit union in the nation, Navy Fed probably doesnt see the need to aggressively pursue new members. Theres little to gain with promoting a backdoor to membership, and theres a lot of potential bad publicity if the backdoor makes news.
