Academic / Physical Fitness Evaluations
MEPS is where you go to take the Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery, otherwise known as the ASVAB, undergo a physical examination, and choose your job .
Going to MEPS is an entire process of steps, starting the night before after you take the ASVAB.
The ASVAB is a test required for the application process which evaluates a potential members aptitude.
It consists of ten short subtests covering the following topics: General Science, Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Mathematics Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Electronics Information, Auto and Shop Information, Mechanical Comprehension, and Assembling Objects.
Practice tests can be found online to take in preparation for the real deal.
The maximum score is 99 and the minimum score to enlist into the Navy is 35.
Based on the overall score and line scores, the ASVAB determines what enlisted careers you are eligible for.
After completion of the ASVAB, you are shuttled to a hotel along with other recruits.
You will be given a meal ticket to have a small dinner, be given a security briefing, and rest before waking up early to be shuttled to MEPS to start the process.
The physical examination and job classification will take a majority of the day, so plan on being there a while.
Joining Space Force As A Civilian Or Federal Employee
The first hurdle for many to overcome is the decision of whether to try to join Space Force as a military member or civilian. Civilian federal jobs, especially where tech industry-type gigs are concerned, have strict qualification and educational requirements.
Those who are interested in civilian jobs with USSF should visit the United States governments official job website, USAJobs.gov and search for jobs with the keywords United States Space Force or United States Space Forces.
The results you get from your search may depend greatly on the current number of jobs on offer at the moment. In some cases you may get NO search results or results that point elsewhere on the internet.
What about those already employed as a DoD civilian in an agency that was meant to transfer over to Space Force jurisdiction? An FAQ on the Air Force official site states that in typical cases, Civilians in units that are part of the Space Force will become Department of the Air Force employees. All provisions of law and policies affecting civilians will remain the same. There is no change to pay, benefits, or retirement.
Space Force official site literature reminds civilians interested in jobs with USSF to apply via USAJOBS.gov.
Looking at USAJobs and other job boards may or may not return job openingsSpace Force will have multiple rounds of hiring and training during the initial years of the new military service.
Serving As A Commissioned Officer In The Military
Officers have significant responsibility as managers and leaders. A newly minted officer typically starts their career as a second lieutenant . Officer grades are designated O-1 through O-10. Promotions bring an increase in pay and responsibility, but happen only if there is a requirement. Thats because, as with enlisted ranks E-5 and above, Congress limits the number of officer positions. Officers may spend several years at each rank before rising to the next, though promotions tends to happen faster in the lower ranks.
Whichever path you choose, a career in the military as either an enlisted service member or as an officer offers both tangible benefits, such as a steady income, paid leave and health care benefits and intangible benefits, such as the pride of service, being part of a community like no other and knowing that you are serving a vital role in protecting your country.

Advancement Opportunities For Enlisted Personnel
Enlisted service members have ample opportunity to advance up the ranks. During their first four-year enlistment, service members are promoted a couple of times. There are also opportunities to become a noncommissioned or commissioned officer:
Becoming a Noncommissioned Officer
Noncommissioned officers are higher-ranking enlisted personnel who play a crucial role in day-to-day military operations and are often referred to as the “backbone” of the Armed Forces. Serving as the liaison between commissioned officers and lower-ranking enlisted personnel, they are responsible for providing advice and guidance to officers as well as leadership and training to lower-ranking enlisted personnel.
To become a noncommissioned officer , a service member must rise up through the enlisted ranks. A service member can only be appointed to noncommissioned officer if he or she is promoted by a higher-ranking officer.
Transitioning from Enlisted to Officer
Some enlisted service members make the transition into officer roles. Enlisted service members with the right qualifications may be recommended by their commanding officers for Officer Candidate/ Training School or Reserved Officer Training Corps . Most Services also have transitional programs that help service members make the leap.
Meeting With A Recruiter
A recruiter is responsible for ensuring an applicant is qualified and that they are aware of the long-term commitment they are about to make.
All questions should be directed toward a recruiter, as they will either have the answer or know the appropriate person who would know it, ranging from qualifications to benefits and pay.
Arrangements to meet with a recruiter can be made using an online locator to find an office nearest you or if the distance is an issue maybe a phone call may be more convenient.
Alternatively, most of the recruiting process can be completed online.
During a typical meeting, a recruiter will guide you through the various career options available, education opportunities, and possibly even cash bonuses.
Think of recruiters as gatekeepers into the Navy.
The more prepared you are to complete the application, the faster the process will go.
