Should I Join the Military?

If you like to smoke a joint once in a while, dont join. The military uses random, no-notice urinalysis, and if youre found positive, you may very well go to jail . The DOD urinalysis test can find THC in your urine for three weeks after youve smoked a joint.

Its often a good idea to bring a parent or relative with you for your first visit.

How Rbs Add Their Support

RBS colleagues who are Reservists like Ashley, as well as Service Leavers, veterans and their families, are all supported by the bank in various ways, and were there for those who want to work with us at all stages of their military career.

As part of our commitment, we have our Armed Forces Network that our colleagues are able to join. Made up of over 250 members, the network includes full-time veterans, reservists, spouses of soldiers or those with an interest in the military.

Colleagues are able to get involved in various events and activities both inside and outside of the bank around the armed forces. We also have Holts, our military bank that provides financial services to British military personnel in the forces who were proud to have been associated with for over 200 years.

When you speak to colleagues in the Reserves across the bank, its clear that theyre happy and feel supported in their choices – which is testament to the great work RBS do for our servicemen and women, as well as their families.

In recognition of this support, were proud to have been given the Gold Award by the Ministry of Defence Employer Scheme. You can read our Inclusion page here, to find out more about our work with the UK government for the Armed Forces Corporate Covenant.

Who Are Reservists And What Do They Do

Reservists are part of team of highly skilled individuals, known as the Canadian Reserve Force. The Reserve Force has four sub-components but the Primary Reserve is the largest component. Reservists usually have a full-time job or attend school during the daytime and work on a part-time basis with the CAF to make a positive impact on their community, learn new skills and earn a little extra money.

Reservists play an important role in supporting Canadian operations both at home and abroad. In the past, part-time CAF members have kept Canadians safe and secure by:

  • helping with flood relief efforts in Quebec and Manitoba
  • fighting forest fires in Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia
  • participating in recovery efforts following ice storms in eastern Canada
  • assisting with hurricane relief efforts in Newfoundland and Labrador

Reservists are also active in their communities and help with cultural events, parades, festivals and other public events in communities across Canada, including the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Our part-time members may also choose to serve overseas, when there are opportunities available.

By law, as a member of the Reserve or National Guard, you must, upon request, be granted a leave of absence to satisfy a requirement for military training. The Uniform Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act requires employers to provide Reservists with time away from their jobs to perform military duty. However, you must notify your employer that you intend to take military leave. You must be reemployed after completion of your military duty and return to your job within a reasonable time. You must be treated as though you never had left employment, including schedule pay raises, promotions or credit for longevity or vacation. Who Are The Army Reserve

Commonly asked questions

Do Reservists get paid?

Certainly! Individuals are paid per day or part day of service and these are known as Reserve Service Days and the pay is the same as the regular army daily rate of pay plus 5% X Factor which is included to compensate for the occasional nuisances of service.

Pay rates are decided each year and are increased in line with rank and seniority. There is a Final Salary Pension scheme based on years of service and any payment in retirement will depend on time served overall and rank and seniority on retirement.

There is paid leave which is added as an extra days pay for each ten days served. There is no need to go on leave to get this as it is paid automatically when an individual has served 10 days.

Travel and subsistence costs are met generally up to a maximum of 50 miles from the unit.

A tax-free bounty is paid if all training and mandatory tests have been completed together with the required number of RSDs. These are 27 for local units and 19 for national. The bounty ranges from £470 in the first year to £1,862 after five years.

What’s the training like?

You’ll need to do your basic training – but this can be arranged to fit in around your day job. You don’t have to do all the training at once. It can be completed in shorter modules or in one go.

National units normally do two weekends and two weeks.

Officers will do different training and a lot of it will be at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst .

Submit Your Application 4medical Exam

You will then take a two part medical exam: First there is a questionnaire on your medical history including specific information on your medication. Then the medical staff will conduct a physical exam to measure your height, weight, evaluate your vision, colour perception and hearing. The second step is a medical file review to determine any limitations that will affect your training and career.

How Do I Choose My Military Occupational Specialty

You can request any MOS for which you qualify. The results of your ASVAB determine what specialties you are eligible to request. Some of the more popular areas may have a waiting list when speaking to a recruiter, be sure to inquire if there is a wait. Be aware that some waiting periods for certain MOSs range from a few months to more than two years. You must have a minimum of 30 months remaining on your enlistment before you can enter any school for an additional MOS. If the school you want has a very lengthy wait, you may need to extend your enlistment a number of months to bring the total left on your enlistment to 30 months.
