Am I Eligible For Education Benefits Under The Mgib

You may be eligible for education benefits under this program if you meet the requirements listed below.

One of these must be true:

  • You have a 6-year service obligation in the Selected Reserve, or
  • Youre an officer in the Selected Reserve and you agreed to serve 6 years in addition to your initial service obligation

Note: Your obligation must have started after June 30, 1985, or for some types of training after September 30, 1990.

And all of these must also be true:

  • You complete your initial active duty for training , and
  • You get a high school diploma or certificate of equal value, like a High School Equivalency Diploma or GED, before finishing IADT , and
  • You stay in good standing while serving in an active Selected Reserve unit

To receive payment as a member of the Air Force Reserve, you need to complete the minimum annual training requirement. The payments vary based on your rank and how many years of service you have committed to the program. Military Student Loan Repayment Programs

Provided your loans are in good standing, the military may pay off some or all of your student loan debt. Your eligibility depends on which military branch you have enlisted in. Heres a glimpse of the branch-specific programs:

  • Active Duty Health Professions Student Loan Repayment Program: Health professionals who are on active duty can qualify for $40,000 per year towards their student loan debt for up to three years. This program applies to those serving in the dental, medical, allied health, nursing, or veterinary corps. If youre in the reserves for these professions, you may also be eligible for up to $50,000 in total loan forgiveness, spread over three years.
  • Army Student Loan Repayment: The military pays for college loans if youre in the Army too up to 33.5 percent, or $1,500, towards the unpaid principal balance of your student loans for each year of active duty.
  • Navy Student Loan Repayment Program: Members of the Navy who served a minimum of three years on active duty during their first enlistment may be eligible for this program. It offers the same rates as the Army: 33.5 percent, or $1,500, toward your principal balance, whichever is greater. As long as your loans are not in default, you can receive as much as $65,000 in loan forgiveness.
  • National Guard Student Loan Repayment Program: This program offers individuals the chance to earn up to $7,500 yearly, with a maximum of $50,000, toward qualifying student loan debts.

Nuclear Propulsion Officer Candidate Program

Pros and Cons of Joining the Military to Pay for College

This program is for students interested in commissioning as a Navy Nuclear Officer after completing their education. There are four potential focus areas within this program: submarine officers, surface warfare officers, naval reactors engineers, naval nuclear power school instructors, and naval nuclear power training unit instructors. Participants in this program will owe a five-year active duty service commitment and an additional three years in the IRR.

  • Award amount: This program provides a monthly stipend of up to $5,610 for up to 30 months. This includes a military salary, a housing allowance, a food allowance, and health care.
  • Eligibility: Students must be U.S. citizens able to meet Navy physical fitness standards. They must be at least 19 years old but cannot reach 29 years of age before commissioning. Students need to be sufficiently skilled in calculus and physics as shown by completing one year of each at an accredited institution. Additionally, students must have completed a bachelors degree or be currently enrolled in a program at an accredited institution. Degree requirements are specific to each focus area.

Air Force Reserve Pay For A Person With 20 Years Of Service

Here is a list of payments earned by those in their 20th year of service in the Air Force Reserve:

  • Airman E-2: $251 per month

  • Airman First Class E-3: $298 per month

  • Senior Airman E-4: $355 per month

  • Staff Sergeant E-5: $453 per month

  • Technical Sergeant E-6: $540 per month

  • Master Sergeant E-7: $640 per month

  • Senior Master Sergeant E-8: $716 per month

  • Chief Master Sergeant E-9: $830 per month

Coast Guard Tuition Assistance Rates

The Coast Guard will fund tuition cost not to exceed $250.00 per semester hour, $166.67 per quarter hour, or $16.67 per clock hour.

TA has an annual maximum or cap of $3,750. This represents a $1,500 increase from the previous annual maximum of $2,250.

  • The annual cap falls within each fiscal year .
  • Once the member uses the maximum allotted amount per year, no waivers will be granted for additional money.
  • The established TA cap does not mean the Coast Guard guarantees to pay the full amount. Budget constraints may require further TA policy changes.

Consider Post 9/11 Gi Bill

Anyone who served on active duty in the military for at least 90 days after September 11, 2001, is eligible for the Post 9/11 GI Bill. This program offers assistance with college tuition, fees, books and living expenses, in varying amounts depending on your length of service. Benefits are provided for a maximum of 36 months and are transferable to spouses and dependent children. If you enroll at a college that participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program, all of your tuition at state universities may be paid for, but there is a maximum benefit amount for private colleges.

Are Military Dependents Eligible For Education Benefits

Individuals enrolled under the Post 9/11 GI Bill can transfer their benefits to their dependents. If youve served at least 90 days of active duty since September 10, 2001, then you or your dependent can already receive tuition and fees, in addition to a stipend for housing and books.

Family members who have survived a military members passing after September 10, 2001, may also be eligible for the Fry Scholarship, which offers the same benefits.

Enlisted Vs Commissioned Officers

There are two distinct career paths in the military: commissioned and enlisted officers. Commissioned officers are effectively the managers of the military, while enlisted officers serve in specific skill areas. The pay scales for each reflect their different degrees of responsibility.

Each military service has its own names for the various enlisted ranks. Most enlisted members enter the military at the lowest pay grade and climb the pay scale to higher positions with greater pay. Enlisted pay grades range from E-1 through E-9 .

To gain the pay advantages of a commissioned officer, some enter the military with a higher education degree and begin their military careers through one of the officer candidate schools. Some are high school graduates who attend a service academy or a civilian college while participating in a Reserve Officer Training Corps ROTC program.

Navy Montgomery Gi Bill Selected Reserve Kicker

The “kicker” provides prospective Navy reserve sailors an incentive to enlist. This money supplements the Montgomery GI Bill, and as such, upon enlistment, sailors must opt into the GI Bill to receive the kicker.

  • Award amount: The award is up to $200 monthly for a maximum of $7,200 for all sailors. The monthly amount depends on the time commitment of the sailor to the Reserve. Benefits can be accrued for up to 36 months.
  • Eligibility: Soldiers must be eligible for Montgomery GI Bill benefits and must not be on active duty. The kicker expires when a soldier can no longer receive Montgomery GI Bill benefits.
  • Applicability: These benefits apply toward degree and certificate programs, correspondence courses, apprenticeships, on-the-job training, preparatory classes needed for admission to a college program, private tutoring, flight training, and overseas study abroad programs.

The following steps focus on how to submit and receive approval of your TA/NCPACE application. These steps should be completed in order.

After your command-approved TA/NCPACE application is authorized by the NCVEC, an authorization voucher is generated. You can print your authorized TA/NCPACE voucher by going to MyNavy Education > Tuition Assistance/NCPACE > Review Applications. Print/Download, and forward the authorized voucher to your school for payment.

Reminder: You must officially register for classes at your school. The TA/NCPACE voucher provides funding but does not enroll you into the course.

Additionally, if you enroll in a course without submitting an authorized TA or NCPACE voucher to your academic institution, you may be liable to pay the entire cost of the course yourself.

Army Reserve Ta Benefits

You must be a drilling Reservist to qualify for TA. If that is you, then the following applies:


  • You must be in good standing with your command
  • Have a goal for your studies
  • Have enough time remaining in your contract to finish said program
  • Follow all Reserve procedures required by your unit including the Independent Study Course
  • Enlisted members are eligible for the same as Active Duty Army, which is 100% tuition assistance, up to $250 per semester hour, or $166 per quarter hour, not to exceed $4,500 annually.

Commissioned Officers:

  • Must be in good standing with your command
  • Have a goal for your studies
  • Have at least four years left in your contract from the date of your degree completion
  • Commissioned Officers eligibility amount differs from Active Duty. You qualify for: 75% tuition assistance, up to $250 per semester hour, $166 per quarter hour, and $4,500 per fiscal year for those pursuing a bachelors degree. You may pursue a masters degree as well but check with your individual drilling units education office for current rates and rules.

Coast Guard Tuition Assistance Eligibility


Tuition Assistance eligibility has undergone a few changes as well, similar to those recently enacted by the Air Force and .

TA is available to Coast Guardsmen who meet the following criteria:

  • Member must be on Active Duty or a Reservist on long-term orders greater than 180 days,
  • COs, OICs or first O-6/GS-15 in the chain-of-command are expected to ensure members meet the following eligibility criteria:
  • Satisfactory progress toward completion of unit quals,
  • Satisfactory progress toward watch station quals,
  • Satisfactory proficiency of craft, and
  • Satisfactory conduct during the six months prior.

Service requirements Enlisted

  • Active duty enlisted members must meet all requirements set forth in the latest ALCOAST or standing policy in order to utilize TA.
  • Active duty members must complete the TA authorized course on or prior to RELAD, discharge or retirement.
  • If member is going to RELAD and provides documentation showing that he/she will be in the SELRES, then TA authorized course may begin in active duty status and be completed in SELRES status.

Service requirements Officer

  • Active duty officers must meet all requirements set forth in the latest ALCOAST or standing policy in order to utilize TA.

Navy Loan Repayment Program

The Navy will agree to pay back part of a sailors federal educational loans if the sailor agrees to enlist and serve on active duty in the Navy. Sailors must be rated within certain occupational specialties to be eligible for this program.

  • Award amount: Stafford Loans, Perkins Loans, Direct Loans, and PLUS Loans are all eligible for repayment. The Navy will repay the greater of one-third of the outstanding balance on the loans or $1,500 after each year of service for up to three years . Sailors are responsible for paying interest and taxes.
  • Eligibility: Enlisting active duty sailors must agree to a service commitment of at least four years. This program is only open to sailors who will enter the Navy through the delayed entry program.
  • To maintain eligibility for benefits under the Montgomery GI Bill, sailors must re-enlist and serve an additional two years on active duty. To maintain eligibility for Post 9/11 GI Bill Benefits, sailors must serve at least six years.

Members of the National Guard and Armed Forces Reserves are eligible for Tuition Assistance dependent upon the military branch. Each branch of the Armed Forces determines how to administer their own Tuition Assistance . NG and Reserve TA funding is dependent on having money in the budget. Once the money is depleted for the fiscal year, TA funding stops until money becomes available again. In addition each state may offer its National Guard service members state funded education incentives based on state guidelines and eligibility .

Air National Guard

The Air National Guard offers the Montgomery G.I. Bill, which you may be eligible to receive. This will provide you with up to $333 per month depending on your course load. We also have the Montgomery G.I. Bill Kicker, which means that selected career fields offer an incentive, which could provide you with an additional $350 per month. Also, some states offer up to 100% tuition assistance! Your local recruiter can provide you with more information.
