Does The Military Pay For College?

There are many that may like to consider the thought of having the U.S. Military cover most, or all of their college tuition yet are hesitant to sign up for something that may put them on the front lines.

It is important to note that while the National Guard is a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, it is starkly different from other types of active duty.

The National Guard is part of the U.S. Army Reserves. It is different from active duty military in that members are not committed full-time to their service.

In fact, most members of the National Guard hold a civilian job full-time while serving part-time with a unit. They are able to carry on normal lives working, going to school, or helping raise a family while also serving their country.

How To Apply To Ta Programs By Military Branch

Army: This tuition assistance program provides financial assistance for voluntary off-duty civilian education programs in support of a soldier’s professional and personal self-development goals. All soldiers on active duty, Army National Guard and Army Reserve Soldiers on active duty, and TPU soldiers are authorized to participate in this program.

Navy: Service members must be on active duty. Students should contact the Navy College Virtual Education Center to speak with a counselor regarding questions pertaining to education funding options and career counseling.

The voluntary education program for Marines assists them with individual counseling regarding many aspects of college, such as finding the right school, testing, obtaining credit for prior military learning, financial aid, and other options that may shorten the amount of time or funds required to complete a degree.

Coast Guard: The Coast Guard tuition assistance program is designed to assist Coast Guard personnel in broadening academic or technical backgrounds by providing funding for off-duty independent education.

Air Force: Interested individuals should apply through the Air Force Virtual Education Center. Your supervisor must approve your request. Continued benefits require maintaining a GPA of 2.0 or higher during undergraduate study.

Education Benefits Available To College Graduates

If you have already graduated from college and have outstanding student loan debt, there are programs that can help repay or cancel your loans. Additionally, you may qualify for financial scholarships offered to college graduates who wish to pursue a post-graduate degree in areas such as law and medicine.

Military Tuition Assistance Programs

Each branch of the armed forces offers a tuition assistance program designed to help active-duty military members pay for their college education. These tuition assistance programs may fund up to 100% of college tuition and certain fees but have certain limits that can be found on the corresponding program’s website. The benefits do not cover classes a member of the military has already taken, and they do not apply to a second associate or bachelor’s degree.

Online Degrees That Build Work Skills

How Much Does the Military Pay for College?

Through a college education, active-duty students can enhance their existing job skills and even advance in rank as they apply what theyve learned to their positions. Spittler explains that a few of the more common National programs known to help military students advance in their careers include information technology management, cybersecurity, and leadership programs.

Some servicemembers choose programs that closely relate to what they are doing on active duty. For instance, many military medics or corpsmen pursue online or on-campus registered nursing programs. While you can serve as a Navy hospital corpsman without being a registered nurse, this educational experience can help you enter the nursing field after active duty.

Other students decide to pursue degrees that dont relate to their role in the military, opting for something that they might consider to be more marketable when they transition out of service, Spittler says. The variety of programs NU offers, more than 75 in all, gives them a lot of options to choose from and the one-month course format is very attractive to a servicemember who may need to pause for a month and then restart classes again.

Other Financial Assistance Options For Veterans

For service members who dont meet eligibility requirements, each branch of the armed forces has related “aid” or “relief” societies, which are non-profit organizations dedicated to providing assistance to military members and their dependents. Quite often, these agencies offer college scholarships, grants, or interest-free loans for dependent college education.

Each of the service-related societies has its own unique programs, eligibility requirements, program parameters, scholarship application forms, and decision processes.

Merit And Minority Scholarships And Grants

Many colleges offer merit scholarships to attract desirable students. They may also have scholarships or grants for athletes or other students with special talents. Scholarships and grants may also be awarded to students who are members of minority groups that are underrepresented in college. Full-ride scholarships are very rare, but this kind of aid can help defray a good portion of college costs.

The best place to find out about grants and scholarships is through a high school or college counselor or other resources provided by your school.

You can also conduct your own research using websites such as CareerOneStop, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor. That site has a wealth of information about professional apprenticeships, certifications, and internships, as well as college aid programs. Your state’s higher-education agency website could also be useful.

The federal government and many states offer tax credits or deductions to cover a portion of your college costs.

The Army Paid $300,000 Of My Dental School Tuition

The student will continue to receive eBills, and is expected to pay any charges that the military tuition assistance program does not cover. The student should contact their military representative if they have questions on which charges are covered by the program. Please see the chart below, but understand this is not a guarantee of what your branch will pay. If the student does not pay the charges that the military doesnt cover, they are subject to late payment fees and holds.

I know “combative” troops or whatever are supposed to be withdrawn from Iraq, but I’m sure the Army will be a good portion of whatever is left over there. You can apply for the JAG Corps, which would be your MOS, but if you don’t get in then you still have to serve. You can look on the website for the other officer positions.I’m not really sure what you mean by the nature of service requirement beyond the length of the commitment…. requirement = commitment so you could get out of the Army and do whatever or stay in the Army?

Final Thoughts On How The Military Pays For College

The military wants to incentivize people to enlist and one way to do that is by helping to pay for education. The variety of options available show that the U.S. government wants to assist its servicemen and women in paying off their student loans or having them forgiven or discharged whenever possible. Its a small, but significant, way to show gratitude for your service.

Can I Use The Post 9/11 Gi Bill And Voc Rehab In Conjunction With Each Other

Yes! The best piece of advice I can give regarding your education benefits would be to use both of these programs in conjunction with each other. This means use the G.I. Bill first, which will give you 36 months of educational benefits with room and board with books and BAH. If you need extra benefits after the 36 months, apply for Voc Rehab to cover your remaining tuition costs.

Why Would I Need to Use Both Benefits?

For example, I used my Post 9/11 G.I. Bill Benefits for my first 4 years of school and needed 2 extra years for a Masters degree. Once my G.I. Bill was done, I applied for my Voc Rehab benefits to pay for the final 2 years of my Masters degree. Fortunately, I was able to get my benefits on time because I applied for them about 4 months before my G.I. Bill ran out. Using both benefits allowed me to walk away with a Bachelors and Masters degree from West Virginia University with absolutely zero debt!

Post 9/11 Bill Eligibility

For the Post 9/11 Bill, you must have completed 6 years of military service and then agree to another 4 years of service to make a total of 10 years. The person receiving the benefits must be first enrolled in DEERS, Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System.

Once enrolled and approved, a military spouse can receive up to 36 months of benefits that can be used for housing, tuition, and books or supplies.

For more information about the GI Bill, eligibility, and transferring it over to a spouse, you can visit the Veterans Affairs website.

Other Benefits Of Joining The National Guard

In addition to the wonderful benefits provided by the National Guard in terms of achieving a college degree, or helping pay for existing student loans, the Guard has many other benefits.

Serving the National Guard is a special honor because it allows you to still live your life on your own terms. Young people can still pursue college full-time or continue to work a civilian job.

Family men and women can still remain close to their families for the vast majority of the year, yet also get some financial assistance.

It is a great alternative to active duty because the commitment is not nearly as demanding yet still offers the same self-fulfillment and pride that comes with any traditional type of military service.

You will learn things about your character you never envisioned, join a second family in the U.S. Military, help serve your country directly in it, and receive plenty of government benefits in the process.

Limit Your Interest With The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act

Does The Military Pay For College For Spouses

The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act is for any military members who took out student loans out prior to joining. They provide a cap on interest rates while you serve on active duty and this applies to both federal and private loans.

The loan mustve been disbursed before you started active duty. The interest rate cannot exceed 6% and this can bring significant savings, especially with private loans.

How to apply for SCRA:

Submit a copy of your service orders to have this applied to your loans

  • Wait until your loan servicer applies the cap through checks of the military database

This is helpful for anyone who wants to join the military after youve finished your education. It can keep your payments low and cap the amount of interest you need to pay back.
