How Does Military Service Impact Medical School Admissions?

An excellent way to determine your fitness level is to undergo a fitness appraisal.

Talk to your doctor before starting a fitness routine or appraisal, particularly if you have a heart condition, feel chest pain, lose your balance or consciousness, have a bone or joint problem, or take drugs for a blood pressure or heart condition. Tell your doctor about the kinds of activities you want to do and follow his or her advice.

Tips For Becoming A Doctor In The Army

Military medicine: Should you let Uncle Sam pay your tuition?

Your first step will be to contact an Army recruiter. That person can give you a clear picture of your options.

If you decide to become an Army doctor, you will begin with same medical training as any physician. You’ll attend either a civilian medical school or the special Uniformed Services University, a federal medical school that trains doctors for the Army, Navy, Air Force and Public Health Service. When you complete your education, which may include specialized training in combat medical skills, you’ll enter the military with a captain’s rank. Army doctors do not have to go through basic training. Instead, they attend a six-week Officer Basic Leadership Course, which teaches about military life and the role of a leader .

Keep in mind that the Army requires the same high academic qualifications as any medical school. That means you need a solid grade point average and a good score on the Medical College Admissions Test . You’ll also need to have recommendations from professors .

The Army has additional qualifications that don’t apply to civilian medical students. You need to be physically fit and must pass height and weight standards. You’ll have to receive a security clearance .

The financial assistance opportunities are many. Here are some of the ways the Army can help with the cost of your medical education :

How Can I Highlight My Military Experience On Medical School Applications And In My Interviews

Your military service can serve as a distinguishing feature on both your medical school applications and during medical school interviews. The AMCAS application collects information about military experience in two places.

First, in the Biographic Information section, there is a section for Military Service as well as a section on Military Discharge. The Military Service section is where you can indicate you are or have served in the US Military, what your status will be at the time of enrollment, your date of separation if you select Veteran, and whether youre eligible for any GI Bills. The Military Discharge section allows you to indicate if you have been discharged and whether your discharge was honorable.

Restrictions On Specialty Or Residency Training

  • No restrictions on specialty or residency training.
  • Every year, they have 800 graduating students between the USHUS and HPSP programs, with the same number of spots in residency programs in their military graduate medical education system.
  • Military matchingstudents compete for military training spots.

What Does The Supreme Court Have To Say About Medical Cannabis

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2002 that doctors have a First Amendment right to provide patients with a recommendation for medical marijuana as long as they, themselves, do not provide the medical marijuana to their patients. This ruling extends to VA doctors.

Unfortunately, policies within the Veterans Health Administration were slow to change. The good news is they have finally caught up and doctors, while not allowed to prescribe medical marijuana, are now able to discuss it openly with their patients and include the possibility of using marijuana as part of an effective treatment plan for patients with qualifying conditions.

Regrettably, the federal government continues to curtail the valuable research that would help confirm or dispel the wealth of anecdotal evidence about the efficacy of medical marijuana. And because the federal government is currently disinclined to support research for the benefits of medical jane, the men and women of the military suffer needlessly.

These are just some of the ways our military service members are suffering because of the classification of marijuana on the federal level:

The push for medical marijuana on the federal level is growing. It may only be a matter of time before the government relents and either allows for greater study, at the federal level, of the potential health benefits medical marijuana represents, or legalizes medical jane on the national level, ending the debate once and for all.

Below you will find the name, length and location of officer training for each Service:

Army, Army Reserve and Army National Guard

Things To Know Before You Try It

  • After education, its basically an eight-year commitment. Most military veterinarians go through the Health Professionals Scholarship Program. The HPSP contract stipulates a minimum three year commitment to active duty, plus five years of reserve duty. While vets are rarely called upon during the five years on inactive duty, its always a possibility.
  • Veterinarians typically enlist as officers, not soldiers. When you become an Army veterinarian, youre not signing up to fight. Instead of Basic Training, you attend a Basic Officer Leadership Course for a few months. Its not as physically tough as the boot camp designed for soldiers, but you still have to be in decent shape. New veterinarian officers also attend a one-year internship program which doesnt count toward your active-duty requirement.
  • Being involved in combat is always a possibility. While your job description is to care for animals and assist with humanitarian efforts, danger isnt off the table. Most Army vets never see combat, but it has happened. If youre sent to a combat zone, you will carry a weapon and should be prepared to fire it. Most missions are fairly low-risk, but veterinarians HAVE been wounded or killed on the job. Veterinarians are never assigned combat-related tasks, but if youre in the vicinity of an unexpected attack, anything can happen. In other words, if you want a risk-free gig, this isnt it.
