What Are The Limitations Of Military Experience Credits

Unfortunately, veterans like me learn the hard way that not all their ACE credits apply for their degree program. After all the recruiter told us how we can get college credit for nearly everything we do and every promotion we earn. But the fact is, most of the ACE credits servicemembers earn only apply to lower-level free-electives. Only a select handful of credits actually apply toward core requirements or upper-level course work.

The main exception is in the case of technical degrees where the veteran is seeking a degree in their actual military occupation. For example a degree in network security may fit with a veterans ACE credits.

In addition, it is up to each college to determine the number of credits they will accept, and how they will be applied toward a specific degree. In fact, some schools may even choose not to grant any credit for military experience. That is why it is critical to shop around for the school that best fits your needs – value, accreditation, degree options, and grants college credit for CLEP exams and military experience.

You need to ask the admissions counselor about the schools policy for accepting ACE credit recommendations before enrolling.

The Air Force typically allows less than one percent of annual recruits from Tier 2. To join the Air Force with a GED, recruits must earn an ASVAB composite score of at least 50, which is 14 points more than with a high school diploma. ASVAB scores also affect your Air Force Specialty Code, or AFSC, which is your specific job within the Air Force.

How Do I Get College Credits For My Military Service

As an active-duty service member, Veteran, or member of the Reserves, youll need to request your transcript from your branch of service and share it with schools. Each school then decides how many credits theyll accept.

    How to request your transcript:

    • For the Army, Navy, Marines, or Coast Guard, go to the Joint Services Transcript website. Fill out an Official Transcript Request to share your transcript with schools online.
    • For the Air Force, go to the Community College of the Air Force website. Submit a request to have your transcript mailed to schools. You can pay for fast delivery if you’re trying to meet a deadline.

    What Is The Asvab Test

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test, or the ASVAB test, serves as the military entrance exam and an aptitude test for military careers. It is a proctored exam that includes ten short tests for you to complete in three hours or less. Each test includes multiple-choice questions related to:

    • General science

    • Surveillance and communications

    • Skilled technical

It’s important to remember some branches require higher scores in general, and most branches have higher score requirements for people with GEDs than they do for those with high school diplomas. In addition to a higher ASVAB composite score, some branches also require higher line scores. Most branches consider the AFQT score the most important line score, especially for recruits with a GED. As some people struggle to take tests, some branches may allow recruits with low scores to get a waiver to take the place of their ASVAB score, which is something you ask your recruiter about.

Becoming An Officer In The Military After College

While its common knowledge that basic training sets recruits on the pathway toward becoming an enlisted service member, those with a desire for leadership opportunities and a bachelors degree can take another route into a military career as a commissioned officer.

The Reserve Officers Training Corps program for college students and Officer Candidate School or Officer Training School for graduates are great options for those who want to earn a four-year college degree before joining the military. Each service branch offers both ROTC and officer schools as entry points to an officer commission.

Keep in mind that there are a different amount of points possible in each category. The points possible are also based on which rank you are being recommended for. However, the maximum amount of points possible is 800 for both Sergeant and Staff Sergeant. Below is a breakdown of the major categories of Army promotion points.

Having a criminal history can also disqualify you. You will need to explain your thought process behind the crimes and show that you are no longer a rule breaker. The military doesnt like to see its Marines, Sailors, Soldiers and Airman in the local newspapers for DUIs, drug use and other offenses.

Here is a list from the Coast Guard that shows you what types of crimes they really look down on and ones that will get you a quick NO from the recruiter. All the branches have a similar chart but just like the medical regulations I talked about above, these rules can change so still visit a recruiter if youre really wanting in. Is Joining The Army The Right Decision For You

The Army has over 150 jobs and bases all around the world, but if you goal is to see the world this is not the right branch for you. If you join the Army, you will more than likely be stationed somewhere in the heartland of America where there is enough room to fit at least 20,000 soldiers, shoot mortars, jump out of planes, and to fire the cannons of M1 Abram tanks. If you want to be a apart of Americas largest fighting force and be supported by the most advanced weapon systems in the world, joining the Army is right for you.

The Armys largest bases are in Texas, North Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky and Washington. Its the Army, not the Marines, Navy, or Coast Guard, so dont expect to be hanging out at the beach unless you are lucky enough to get stationed in Hawaii. You could end up in Alaska or Fort Drum, NY, which some would say you do not know what cold is until you have been there. The good thing about the Army is you have negotiating power in your contract. The other branches are not as large and flexible about job choices or where you are going to be stationed. If the Army thinks you are good candidate, you will be able to pick your job and where you want to go!

Joining the Army will transform you from a civilian to a Soldier. By the end of initial entry training you will-

    College Credits For Military Training

There are a ton of colleges that claim to be military friendly and give college credits for your military training. However, the one thing they want is money. None of the schools that are well known for converting Army transcripts to college credits are what they seem. Through my research, I found that they wanted you to pay an admission fee, transcript evaluation fee or a fee based on the amount of credits they awarded you. This is just a ridiculous way to get money from soldiers and it is not right.

    Getting Fit With Fitt

As a rule of thumb, ease into your activities, gradually increase each element of FITT, and end each session with a cool-down. For example:

    • Begin with a 5- to 10-minute warm-up. Walking, biking or a slow jog will increase blood flow to the muscles and lightly increase your heart rate. Follow up with some light stretching of the muscles you will be using in your workout.
    • Improving your overall fitness is most effectively done through a combination of 20 to 60 minutes of aerobic and strength exercises. The two sample fitness sessions below are based on Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology guidelines.
    • A 5- to 10-minute cool-down helps return your body to its normal, pre-exercise condition. Suddenly stopping an intense workout can make you dizzy, nauseated or even faint. Walking, biking or a slow jog will gradually bring down your heart rate and relieve muscle soreness.

More On Entering With Advanced Rank

Almost all recruits who join with advanced rank are paid the rate of base pay for that advanced rank right from the first day of active duty. However, in most of the services, recruits do not get to wear the rank until they graduate from basic training.

Make sure the contract you sign has all of your qualifications for advance ranking and any additional steps you have to do to ensure you qualify. It is up to you to be proactive with the recruiter, or you could miss out on achieving a higher rank and pay more quickly. As with other enlistment incentives, advanced enlistment rank must be included on your enlistment contract.
