How To Join The Marines Without A Diploma

The United States Marine Corps, or USMC, is one of the branches of the U.S. armed forces. Different branches of the military have different enlistment requirements, but it is possible to enlist in the Marines without a high school diploma. Ninety percent of enlisted Marines are required to hold diplomas, however the Marines have a policy of accepting no more than 5 percent of recruits without one. Enlistees are placed in a three-tier system. Tier 1 recruits hold a diploma, tier 2 recruits have earned a GED and tier 3 recruits have neither.

Meet the age and physical requirements of enlistment. You must be between age 17 and 35 to enlist in the Marines. If you are 17, you will need your parents permission. Physical requirements vary depending on your gender, but generally you must be between 5 feet and 6 feet, 8 inches tall, weigh less than 255 lbs., be able to pass a physical examination and have acceptable vision, either with or without glasses.

Pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, or ASVAB, test. This is a timed test in four parts: Arithmetic Reasoning, Math Knowledge, Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension. You need a minimum score of 31 on the ASVAB to enlist in the Marines. The less education you have, the more important your score becomes.

Undergo Testing For Entry Into The Army

Once you have completed the requisite paperwork and interview with the recruiter, you will need to take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test. The ASVAB is a series of questions designed to test your understanding of various subjects, such as math, science, electronics and reading. The military uses this test to determine which position you are most suited for.

In order to become a combat medic, you will need a score of 101 or higher on the skilled technical portion of the ASVAB and 107 or higher on the general technical portion. Consider devoting some time to studying before signing up for the ASVAB so you’re prepared on exam day.

You will also need to pass a physical examination and show that you are physically fit enough to serve in the military. This examination takes place at a military entrance processing station where you will need to go through a full physical examination and routine tests, such as hearing, eye and blood tests, and provide your medical history. Requirements To Join The Army With A Ged

The Army typically allows up to 10 percent of annual recruits from Tier 2. To join the Army with a GED, recruits must earn an ASVAB composite score of at least 50, which is 19 points more than with a high school diploma. ASVAB scores also determine your Military Occupation Specialties, or MOS, which is your specialized job while serving. The Army also may require Tier 2 recruits to take part in a 90 day delayed entry program before completing basic training.
