Do You Have To Pay For Military School

Do You Have To Pay Employees For Military Leave

If an employee of your company is part of the military, you should be proud of their bravery and patriotism.

At the same time, if this person is taking military leave, you must understand your legal rights as a small business owner and be sure to follow any laws that are set in place for your military employee.

The most important thing you can do is become familiar with the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act .

As far as pay goes, public employers are required to pay military personnel while on duty. Or, at the very least, the difference between military pay and public employment pay.

While not required by law, many private employers choose to pay employees out of respect for their decision to serve and protect their country.

According to the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, the USERRA is designed to protect people who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, Reserve, National Guard, or other uniformed Services in three ways:

  • Ensure they are not disadvantaged in their career because of their service
  • Ensure they are promptly reemployed in their civilian job upon returning from duty
  • Ensure they are not discriminated against based on past, current, or future military service

In addition to the USERRA, employers and employees should consult their state government for guidelines that apply to military pay and employment.

Tuition Including Room And Board

Tuition is the basic price you pay to attend the school and receive instruction. At most military schools, the price of tuition includes room and board this means that housing and meals are included in the tuition price.

Schools may charge different tuition prices for different types of students:

Day Students vs. Boarding Students – Some schools admit local students as day students who live at home and commute to the school each day. Tuition for day students is typically lower than for boarding students because it does not include housing and provides for fewer meals.

7-Day Boarding vs. 5-Day Boarding – Schools may offer a 5-Day Boarding program, meaning the students return home each weekend. Tuition for 5-Day Boarding is usually a bit lower than that for 7-Day Boarding, but you are then responsible for transporting your student home and back each weekend.

Upper School vs. Middle School – Some schools charge different tuition prices for students in Middle School than they do for students in the Upper School grade levels.

Domestic US Students vs. International Students – Schools in the United States typically charge a higher tuition rate for international students. This helps to cover the greater costs of managing visas, passports, more complex travel arrangements, and additional mentoring and acculturation assistance needed by international students. International students may also have additional costs for medical insurance coverage while at school.

Why Dr Shaw Chose A Civilian Residency

What to Ask Your Recruiter

When he was finishing his military service, Dr. Shaw participated in both the military and AOA matches, landing family medicine residency positions in both. Dr. Shaw ultimately chose a civilian residency through the AOA in part because it was less of a time commitment.

The military considers its residency training to be free education that must be paid back with more active duty service. Because Dr. Shaw had already completed his required service for med school, he would have owed the military additional years of service after finishing a military residency.

What Will Med School Be Like

As an HPSP scholar, med school is not much different than your civilian peers. You take the same classes and dont have to wear your uniform to class. You will have to attend officer training and take part in one 45-day training session each year you get scholarship funds. During training, you can still study for exams at your med school, do research, or perform clinical rotations at military treatment facilities. You will wear your uniform during training periods.

Choosing A Military Or Civilian Residency

HPSP scholars who received support for all four years, like Dr. Shaw did, then owe the military four years of active-duty service after they finish medical school. Residency training, whether completed inside or outside the military, does not count toward the service requirement.

HPSP scholars must enter the military match, in which theyre considered for military residency slots. However, when submitting their rank list, they can include a request for deferment to pursue a civilian residency program. When scholars get deferment, they then participate in one of the civilian matches.

Dr. Shaw chose to finish his military commitment before residency. When he entered the military match, he requested and got a one-year traditional rotating internship with the Navy, which allowed him to obtain an unrestricted medical license to practice in the military. Military physicians with one year of training and a medical license typically practice as a general medical officer, the military version of a primary care physician. In that role, they have their own patients, can write prescriptions and make autonomous treatment decisions.

More Sources Of College Aid For Active

In addition to the special programs described above, both active-duty members of the military and veterans are eligible for the same types of financial aid as any other student. Those includePell grants, subsidized and unsubsidized federal student loans, and federal work/study programs.

They also are eligible for numerous state, institutional, and private scholarships, some specifically for current and former members of the military.

To apply for financial aid, prospective students should fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid . The FAFSA is used by both the federal government and other dispensers of aid to determine a student’s eligibility based on their financial resources. For FAFSA purposes, members of the military are considered “independent students,” which means they dont have to supply information about their parents’ finances.

Active-duty military members and veterans are also eligible for special student loan benefits and repayment options that are not available to other borrowers.

How Much Is Military School Tuition

Tuition at most college preparatory military boarding schools ranges from about $25,000 to $50,000 per year.

Military schools are a great value when compared to traditional boarding schools, where the median tuition price is over $53,000.

But tuition is only the sticker price.

The good news is that the real cost paid by most families for military school is often significantly less than the tuition price, depending on your financial circumstances. Lets take a closer look at the actual costs of attending a military school in the United States, and then examine just how affordable military school can be.

    Take Out Student Loans

Most students turn to student loans to cover the cost of law school, and federal and private options are available. Law graduates with debt graduate owing an average of $145,000, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, so borrow wisely.

    • Take out federal direct loans first. These have a lower interest rate than other federal loans law students may qualify for. Law students can borrow up to $20,500 per year in unsubsidized loans and no more than $138,500 overall in subsidized and unsubsidized loans .

    • Cover remaining costs with federal PLUS loans. Once you reach your annual or overall borrowing maximum for unsubsidized loans, turn to graduate PLUS loans. You can borrow up to the remaining cost of attendance at your law school, minus other aid youve received. You can apply for all federal student loans by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA.

» MORE: Law school loan forgiveness and repayment programs

Private lenders may advertise lower rates and offer savings on fees, especially compared with PLUS loans. But private loans lack programs like income-driven repayment and Public Service Loan Forgiveness that provide financial security.

If your post-law school path leads to the private sector and a high salary like by joining a Big Law firm, for example consider opting for private loans. But keep in mind that you can refinance law school loans later to recoup some savings.
