Career Path And Progression
When you join the army, you sign up for 4 years. You can leave at any time after this as long as you give 12 months’ notice. If you want to stay you can extend your 4-year contract.
With training and experience you could move up through the ranks or into a specialist unit like the commandos. You could also gain a commission to become an officer which would give you a higher salary.
Whats A Typical Day In The Coast Guard Like
Just like the other branches, this depends exclusively on what rate you hold and where youre stationed.
Unlike most of the other branches, however, it was nearly impossible to find out what the typical day in the Coast Guard would be like.
It varies so dramatically that Ive decided to leave it out in this article.
If anyone who has served in the US Coast Guard wants to send me an email with their a brief recap of their day-to-day activities, it would be greatly appreciated!
Whats Basic Training Like
Army Basic training is considered one of the tougher ones in the US Military, although not quite as tough as the Marines .
Officially known as Basic Combat Training , its comprised of 3 phases and lasts 10 weeks.
out how hard Army Basic training is.
Throughout basic, you will do things like:
- Run obstacle courses
- Conduct tactical foot marches
Oh yeah, and youll also go through a bit of an unpleasant experience: gas chamber training.

Cool Jobs In The Marines
Like the Navy, jobs in the marines are divided up into MOS, or military occupation codes.
Just like with the other branches, your job will completely depend on what your ASVAB score is.
A lot of guys that sign up for the Marines sign up for one job only: Infantryman.
This is the most common job in the Marines, and puts you on the front lines of most foreign conflicts.
With that said, there are plenty of other job opportunities in the Marines.
Some of the more rewarding and marketable ones include:
As I mentioned earlier, most Marine recruits sign up for the infantry.
But its always a good option to keep your eyes peeled for jobs like the ones above, especially if youre considering your options after enlistment.

Enlisting As A College Graduate Instead Of Joining As An Officer
While most college graduates think their best path forward to a career in the military is to join as an officer, some want a different experience. Officer training provides the most common path, but the military does permit graduates to enter as enlisted members. Though college graduates gain many valuable, transferable skills during their time in school, they do not learn the basic skills and knowledge related to joining the armed forces.
Topics such as military traditions, appearance, and the history of the branch you choose to serve in typically arent taught to officers, so someone wanting to work their way up may value this type of training. Others feel that, rather than immediately joining the ranks as a leader, they should experience training from bottom to top to gain the respect of those they command. When joining as an enlisted soldier, all new recruits go through the same paces and their commanding officers expect them to complete each and every step regardless of existing education.
Alton E. Pete is retired from the United States Army. Born and raised in the Bay Area, he graduated from El Cerrito High School. After a couple of years in college, he later joined the army in 1987. He started his military career at Fort Lewis, Washington was stationed in Hanau, Germany and went on various assignments throughout the States and Puerto Rico. Hes currently back in college to pursue his masters degree in music and then a PhD.
How Do You Join The Army
The Army’s recruitment website explains the process and requirements to become a soldier. Enlisted roles are entry-level positions. You can enlist with a high school diploma or GED. Serving as a commissioned officer requires a four-year degree.
Military member benefits include hands-on training, money for higher education, housing, and healthcare. Military service also carries prestige. But your service also requires serious sacrifices. The most significant is that you may face life-threatening wartime situations.
If you’re OK with those requirements and sacrifices, here’s a basic breakdown of how to join:

Excellence In All We Do
Pursuing a career in the Air Force is admirable and will be incredibly rewarding, but it requires discipline even before you begin training. KEY THINGS TO CONSIDER
Be Part Of Something Bigger Than Yourself
Most of us go through our daily lives working towards something that is going to benefit us.

When people back home talk about the war overseas, youll have a firsthand perspective to add to the conversation.

Not So Cool Jobs In The Air Force
While most others in the military consider the Air Force more of a college campus than a branch of the military, its not without its downsides.
While many Air Force jobs are actually considered exciting, there are several jobs that arent exactly considered the most fun or interesting.

Full Medical Coverage For You And Your Family
Military members are immediately eligible for full health care benefits for themselves and their immediate family members as soon as they enter the service, and if you stay through until retirement, you and your family can take these benefits with you when you leave the military. These health benefits extend to immediate family . You may also be eligible for temporary military healthcare benefits after you leave the service.
It Isnt A Videogame Where You Hit X To Respawn
Always remember the basic function of US troops, no matter the branch of service, is to close with and destroy the enemies of the United States in close combat. You will be trained to kill and there may come a time when you will have to take a life or have yours taken from you. For the record, it isnt a videogame where you hit X to respawn.
If youre looking to prove yourself somehow, win medals, or gain glory, I will tell you now you wont. The warriors we veterans look up to, the ones whove gone before, werent in it for that foolishness. They were it for something greater. They simply rose to the challenge set before them and went above and beyond for that something greater.
All in all, the military is a great calling and vital for the preservation of our nation. You shouldnt think of it as your last option. However, it is not for everyone.

I Joined The Army After High School
Let me start by telling you a little about the military. Well, the Army. I cant speak to the Marine Corps, Navy, or Airforce experience. I can say that my parents were both Marines and by the end of my service I outranked both of them. That makes for fun family reunions.
I could also proceed to tell you every single Marine and Air Force joke in the book, but I will let the inter-service rivalry subside for now. All in all, each branch of the military is very similar when it comes down to basic principles and mission.
Every service member swears the same oath and that oath sticks with you long after your time in service has come to an end. No matter if your choice is to be an Airman, Soldier, Sailor, or Marine you will become something different from who you are now. You will be a warrior, a sheepdog.
Heres Why Most Americans Cant Join The Military
The military has embraced openly-gay members within its ranks, and now squabbles over combat roles for women and whether to accept transgender troops, but the future may require the Pentagon to accept whomever it can get.
At the height of the Iraq War, it seemed like the standard for service was so low, even convicted felons could get into the Army and Marine Corps.
But today, more than two-thirds of Americas young people wouldnt qualify for military service because of physical, behavioral, or educational problems.
The services have long required at least a high-school education as a prerequisite for joining.
The Army used to offer GED assistance for recruits who wanted to join. These days, having a felony conviction is out of the question, but so are some tattoos, gauged earlobes, and taking hyperactivity medication. The Pentagon says 71 percent of Americas 34 million 17-24 year old population would fail to qualify for enlistment.
Of those eligible for service, the Army estimates only one percent even have an interest.
The U.S. Armys major enlistment requirements include:
- Ages between 17 and 34 years old
- Must be U.S. citizen or legal foreign national
- Must have high school diploma or equivalent
- Minimum 33 score on Armed Forces Qualification Test
- No tattoos on fingers, neck or face
- No ear gauges
- No persistent illegal drug use
- No insulin-dependent diabetes
- Meet height & weight requirements

About a year ago, I happened upon this statement about the Monitor in the Harvard Business Review under the charming heading of do things that dont interest you:
Many things that end up being meaningful, writes social scientist Joseph Grenny, have come from conference workshops, articles, or online videos that began as a chore and ended with an insight. My work in Kenya, for example, was heavily influenced by a Christian Science Monitor article I had forced myself to read 10 years earlier. Sometimes, we call things boring simply because they lie outside the box we are currently in.
If you were to come up with a punchline to a joke about the Monitor, that would probably be it. Were seen as being global, fair, insightful, and perhaps a bit too earnest. Were the bran muffin of journalism.
But you know what? We change lives. And Im going to argue that we change lives precisely because we force open that too-small box that most human beings think they live in.
The Monitor is a peculiar little publication thats hard for the world to figure out. Were run by a church, but were not only for church members and were not about converting people. Were known as being fair even as the world becomes as polarized as at any time since the newspapers founding in 1908.

But Wait Isnt The Military Dangerous
One major reason many people dont consider the military is the perception of a high mortality rate. This is primarily caused by the media. The reality is many military specialties are no more dangerous than their civilian counterparts. Your branch of service and your career field will go along way toward determining the risk you will be exposed to.
Military members may be eligible for VA service-connected disability benefits if they are injured or become ill during their military service. Receiving a VA disability rating makes the veteran eligible for lifetime disability compensation benefits.
In the unlikely event of a service members death, the military or the VA provides a lifetime of benefits for your survivors. The surviving family is given an immediate $100,000 death gratuity benefit, a $400,000 lump sum life insurance benefit , social security and indemnity monthly payments for years, and the transferability of many VA benefits. The military members time served is not taken for granted.
