If you are currently on the list for base housing and nothing is available for you, the government will pay to move your goods out to your temporary destination. Once you are assigned goverment quarters, the military will move you again to get on base. Note, breaking your lease to move onto base housing is not a valid reason. You will be responsible for any fines or rent due according to the lease you signed.

Air Force And Army Dormitories

If your recruiter promised you condos, you’re out of luck. However, all of the services have implemented plans to improve single housing for enlisted personnel.

The Air Force was the first service to get started on the program and are arguably ahead of the other services. All airmen, outside of basic training and technical school are now entitled to a private room. The Air Force started with remodeling barracks into a concept called one-plus-one, which provided a private room, a small kitchen, and a bathroom and shower shared with one other person.

The Air Force has now upgraded its program using a concept called “Dorms-4-Airmen.” All new Air Force dormitories are now designed using this concept. Dormitories under this program are four-bedroom apartments. Airmen have a private room and private bath and share a kitchen, washer and dryer, and a living room with three other airmen.

The Army’s standard is a two-bedroom apartment, designed for two Soldiers. Each soldier gets a private bedroom, and they share a kitchen, bathroom, and living room.

Cons Of Living On Base

  • Housing is determined by pay grade and family size, and youre typically assigned a residence. You could luck out with a single-family home with a backyard or get stuck in a duplex or fourplex with no yard. It could be newly renovated or old and in need of repair.
  • You have to go through the security gate anytime you enter or exit base, which can feel like a hassle.
  • Youre insulated in a small cultural bubble, so you may not get as much of an authentic experience living in a new place .
  • There have been many reports of privatized housing companies behaving poorly, including instances of failing to repair homes or address safety concerns like faulty wires or black mold. Fortunately, the new Military Housing Privatization Initiative Tenant Bill of Rights offers new rights to military families living in privatized base housing, so familiarize yourself with your rights.
  • Depending on the base, you may have to get used to noise from aircraft, gun ranges, or training exercises.
  • If the military spouse runs a business out of the home, they may not be permitted to do so from on-base housing.

Military Housing For Married Couples Or Those With Dependents

If you are married and living with your spouse or minor dependents, you will either live in on-base housing or be given a monetary allowance called Basic Allowance for Housing to live off-base. The amount of BAH depends on your duty station zip code, your rank, and whether or not you have dependents.

If you are in the Guard or Reserves and entitled to a housing allowance, you will receive a reduced BAH, called BAH Type II. You will receive BAH Type II anytime you are on active duty for less than 30 days. If you are on orders to serve on active duty for 30 days or more, you’ll receive the full housing allowance rate, the same as active-duty personnel.

If you have dependents, you will receive the housing allowance, even when staying in the barracks at basic training or technical school/AIT/A-School. This is because the military makes it mandatory for you to provide adequate housing for your dependents. This will be included as part of your regular paycheck, half on the first of the month and a half on the last duty day of the month. For basic training or technical school/AIT/A-School, you will receive the BAH amount for the location where your dependents are residing.

However, if you are not married or divorced and are paying child support, you do not receive full-rate BAH while living in the barracks. In this case, special rules apply, and the member receives BAH-DIFF.

Can Snap And Fssa Be Used Concurrently

No. Once you receive FSSA benefits, your eligibility for SNAP ends. You are required to report the FSSA income to the SNAP office as income. However, those who receive SNAP benefits are authorized and encouraged to apply for FSSA to replace SNAP.

Receiving FSSA benefits may also affect the ability to financially qualify for other government programs such as WIC . It may also change eligibility for school lunch programs, earned income tax credits, and other benefits.

Tax code for both federal and state income taxes change frequently. Ask a tax professional how recipient of federal assistance such as SNAP or FSSA affects taxes.

Bah Does Not Cover Renter’s Insurance

Another congressionally mandated change eliminated renter’s insurance from the BAH calculation. That means that troops are expected to pay out of pocket for such insurance. Privatized base housing companies also no longer provide that protection as part of on-base rental agreements.

Looking After Your Sfa

You are responsible for keeping your home in a reasonable condition during the time you occupy SFA, and protecting it from damage. In addition, you need to take care of:

  • changing domestic fuses and light bulbs
  • taking precautions to prevent damage to the SFA by fire, frost, the bursting of water pipes and the blocking of drains
  • clearing any sink or bath blockages
  • routine testing and cleaning of smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms
  • resetting of electrical trip switches due to faulty bulbs
  • ensuring that all repairs are reported to the relevant maintenance helpdesk as they occur

Many Military Families Are Paying More Than $200 A Month Out Of Pocket For Housing Costs Above Bah Survey Finds

Many active-duty military families who live outside installations are paying more than $200 a month out of pocket for housing costs above what theyre getting in their Basic Allowance for Housing, according to a newly released survey.

For military families, finding housing that fulfills both location and family needs can be a costly balancing act, stated researchers in the 2020 Military Family Lifestyle Survey, conducted by Blue Star Families in collaboration with Syracuse Universitys Institute for Veterans and Military Families.

And with greater out-of-pocket housing costs comes increased financial stress, the researchers found in their analysis.

By law, Basic Allowance for Housing is designed to cover, on average, 95 percent of service members housing rental and utility costs in the private sector, and varies by location, rank and whether there are dependents. Those living in the local community have varying costs that may be more or less than their BAH.

So theoretically, military families are left to pick up 5 percent of their housing costs, which according to the Defense Department, should range between $70 to $158 a month in 2021. The majority of the families in the survey reported theyre paying more than $200 a month extra in housing costs.

Researchers also noted that impacts from the pandemic may have put additional constraints on the housing market, which may have affected service members costs.

If you are moving to a new SFA property, please provide details of any special requirements for SFA at the point of application using the e-1132 form or the MOD Form 1132, enclosing any reports from the appropriate professional source, such as your occupational therapist. It is important that the Amey Occupancy Services team is made aware of special requirements at the earliest opportunity.

If you require adaptions to your current SFA property, or your medical requirements have changed and you need some further adaptions to your existing SFA, you will need to contact the Helpdesk who will record your request and ask you to provide a Medical Report and/or Occupational Therapists report in order to progress your request.

Differences Between Stateside And Overseas

Before diving further into housing options, its critical to know how housing varies whether youre stationed in the Continental United States or outside itfor example, overseas .

When youre stationed CONUS, unless you live in government-owned base housing, youll receive a monthly BAH payment as part of your paycheck. The amount you receive is determined by your rank/pay grade, geographic location, and if you have dependents. Its up to you to use that money to pay your rent and any utilities if you have money left over.

If you find a place that costs less than your BAH, you can pocket the difference, so this can be a smart option in affordable areas. For example, if your BAH is $1,200 but your rent is $1,000, you still get the extra $200 and can spend it however you want. Conversely, in more expensive areas, you may end up paying some out of pocket. Though the BAH is calculated to cover rent but not mortgage payments, some service members choose to buy homes in order to build equity. Just be aware that the BAH doesnt account for costs of homeownership such as property taxes or insurance.
