Military Scams From Yemen Syria And Afghanistan: How To Stay Safe

Are you a potential victim of an online military scam? The answer of most of people is no, because most of us cant picture ourselves being deceived. It cant happen to me. However, military scams are more complex every day and reach more people. Fake soldiers in Syria and Afghanistan have been scamming thousands of people around the world, and most recently investigators have seen a sharp increase in these type of cases in Yemen. Being informed and cautious wont hurt, and in turn it can help you, a relative or a friend remain safe.

Yemen, Syria and Afghanistan: The focus of the scam

On one hand, military presence is real. On the other hand, military members are generally perceived as lonely heroes who are sacrificing for a greater good. They are isolated from family and loved ones, and their living conditions are limited to the particular circumstances of war. Fraudsters combine these factors to put together a persona that is vulnerable, in need for caring, and someone who deserves this caring without question. Victims find it easy to believe in the solider story and want to help, and this is when the scammers manipulation process starts.

Peacekeeping Capability Readiness System

The UN Peacekeeping Capability Readiness System aims to establish a more predictable and dynamic process of interaction between the UN Headquarters and Member States for strengthening readiness and timely deployment of peacekeeping capabilities with the right qualities.

There are four levels of readiness in PCRS:

  • Level 1: A Troop Contributing Country makes a formal pledge for a unit and provides the list of major and self-sustainment equipment and certification of completion of basic training and human rights screening. Member States are encouraged to include the time frame of availability and duration of deployment for each pledged capability.
  • Level 2: Based on the UN operational requirements, pledges at Level 1 can be elevated to Level 2 after an assessment and advisory visit has been conducted by a UN Headquarters team.
  • Level 3: Following a satisfactory assessment, units which have achieved a reasonable degree of preparedness are elevated to Level 3.
  • Rapid Deployment Level : Having reached Level 3, the Troop Contributing Country may pledge to deploy within 60 days following a request made by the UN Headquarters.

The military pay system can be pretty complicated, especially for a new military member. It is even more complicated for new military spouses to understand. Marrying into the military transforms your daily life, and if you havent been exposed to it before, it can be a culture shock. Unfortunately, it doesnt come with a manual!

Military Scams: How To Avoid Them

You can avoid being taken for a ride by a military scam artist by practicing a few easy habits.

Never send money. Be extremely suspicious if you are asked for money for transportation costs, communication fees or marriage processing and medical fees via Western Union.

Do your research. If you do start an Internet-based relationship with someone, check them out. Research what they are telling you with someone who would know, such as a current or former service member.

Communicate by phone. Be very suspicious if you never get to actually speak with the person on the phone or are told you cannot write or receive letters in the mail. Servicemen and women serving overseas will often have an APO or FPO mailing address. Internet or not, service members always appreciate a letter in the mail.

Fact-check. Many of the negative claims made about the military and the supposed lack of support and services provided to troops overseas are far from reality. Check the facts.

Don’t use a third party. Be very suspicious if you are asked to send money or ship property to a third party or company. Often, the company exists but has no idea or is not a part of the scam.

Watch for African countries. Be very suspicious if the person you are corresponding with wants you to mail anything to an African country. While some U.S. troops are stationed there, they are few and far between. Someone claiming to be in a place where we have few troops is suspect. Many scams originate in Nigeria.

Gender Advocate Of The Year Award

The United Nations Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award recognises the dedication and effort of an individual peacekeeper in promoting the principles within the Security Council Resolution 1325. The Resolution provides three provisions, called the 3 Ps. The first two Ps are prevention of conflict and protection of women and their rights during and after conflict. The third P is participation and refers to increasing the numbers of women in all mechanisms for the prevention and resolution of conflict.

In current peacekeeping operations, it is vital that peacekeepers understand how women and men experience conflict differently. The Resolution calls on all actors to adopt a gender perspective to better understand the special needs of women and girls and ensure their participation, protection from and prevention of sexual violence in conflict.

The Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award recognises the dedication and effort of an individual peacekeeper in promoting the principles of UNSCR 1325 within a military context, as nominated by Force Commanders and Heads of peacekeeping missions. The award also raises the profile and understanding of what mainstreaming a gender perspective within a military context in peacekeeping mission means.

Army Family Health Care

Taliban seize billions of dollars worth U.S.-supplied military equipment | Afghanistan News

TRICARETricare is the medical entitlement program of the Department of Defense and utilizes military medical facilities for examinations or treatment. It also uses civilian health-care providers who are a part of the Tricare health network for referrals, consultations and other examinations.

Whether or not there is any out-of-pocket expense for the family will depend on a soldiers rank and the specific Tricare program option in which the family member is enrolled. Family members are allowed to go to civilian health-care providers if they desire, but must have either an understanding in advance with Tricare or separate health insurance.

Dental CareThe availability of dental care will vary from Post to Post but is usually available for Soldiers. However, family member care is generally not available at military dental facilities. Family members may get dental insurance through the Tricare Dental Program, which is managed by a civilian firm, United Concordia. It is a voluntary, cost-effective, comprehensive program offered worldwide by the DoD to family members of all active duty branches of the military, and to selected Reserve and Individual Ready Reserve members and their family members.

Internet Access For Soldiers In Afghanistan And Iraq

Why It Will Take Until 2028 To Make Soldiers Look Like ...

I receive many questions about Internet access for deployed soldiers to Afghanistan and Iraq and hope this information will be a help.

Keep in mind your soldiers should always find out before deployment what is available at the deployment location.

Internet access in Afghanistan and Iraq is delivered via satellite broadband. The Internet signal is received through a special satellite VSAT modem which is usually set up in a building or tent.

Internet access for soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq is usually available via the following methods.

If your son or daughter is getting ready for deployment, they should find out ahead of time what will be available at their deployment location. Soldiers in remote outposts do not have access to Internet.

Internet access is a morale booster for deployed soldiers! We are fortunate to have Internet access available at all. In previous wars, letter writing was the only form of communication and letters were received every few weeks. I am thankful for Internet for deployed soldiers! HOOAH!

Increasing The Number Of Female Peacekeepers

The deployment of female peacekeepers to peace operations significantly, contributes to achieving sustainable peace and the improved wellbeing of women and girls in conflict-affected regions.

Security Council Resolution 1325 urges equal participation of women at all sectors of peacekeeping operations, including the military. This is also reinforced in the policy on gender equality by the Departments of Peace Operations and Operational Support and the guidelines for integrating gender perspective into the works of the UN Military .

Pay Allowances And Promotions

Service members are paid twice a month based on pay grade, service requirements and time in service. A paycheck generally consists of base pay plus special pays and allowances, if a service member is eligible.

There are many different types of allowances, including the Basic Allowance for Housing , Basic Allowance for Subsistence , cost-of-living adjustments and so on.

The Military promotes people based on a combination of job knowledge and performance, time served at that level, physical fitness and the needs of the Service. Individuals joining the enlisted ranks are typically promoted three times during the first four-year enlistment. Officers are usually promoted twice during the same period.

Communicating With Your Partner On Deployment

Hopefully, you and your service member had a discussion during pre-deployment about how often you’ll communicate while he’s gone. If you didn’t do this before he left, it’s not too late to try to establish these expectations now. However, even with a tentative calling or emailing schedule, both you and your service member may struggle to maintain the routine. As much as service members would like to establish a schedule for reaching their loved ones, their missions in a combat zone or operational activities may interfere. As a result, many spouses and partners carry cell phones with them at all times to avoid missing their service member’s call.

Communication Tip

Try to avoid comparing how often you speak with your service member with how often somebody else says they are speaking with their service member. Focus on what works for you and your service member and don’t worry about how other couples are communicating.

Schedules Can be Hard to Maintain

“I try to understand that although my husband does miss me, he may not want to spend his whole deployment on the computer with me. It can make it harder for him. He needs his ways of dealing and to get his mind off of the deployment. If the chow hall is having a themed dinner he may spend more time there with co-workers and friends than on the computer with me. He may spend more time with his friends at the gym. This doesn’t mean that he does not want to talk to his family.”Air Force spouse

Soldiers Dont Have Time For This

Watch: Taliban flaunt weapons, dollars after US, IMF freeze funds amidst Afghan turmoil

99.9% of military guys overseas dont have the time available to them to email, chat and Skype for hours at a time or even every day online. They are too busy doing their JOB. And most have no interest in dating someone online while theyre deployed. Continuing to talk to their loved one that they knew before deployment? Absolutely! Time to peruse dating sites and chat for hours? Absolutely not.

The Thrift Savings Plan

Serving military members now get access to a tax-deferred retirement account called the Thrift Savings Plan . It works like a 401 account, right down to the contribution limits $19,000 per year in 2019 for employees under 50, with an additional $6,000 allowed for those 50 and over. As with standard 401 accounts, military service members can choose investments among a limited set of options.

The TSP even offers a Roth option, allowing service members to pay taxes on contributions now and avoid them later on withdrawals.

When new service members enroll, the DOD sets a 3% voluntary contribution rate by default. Members can opt out of it if they prefer.

But interestingly, the military pays a 1% contribution almost immediately for new hires, starting within 60 days of enrollment. After two years, service members become eligible for matching contributions from the DOD.

The DOD matches up to 3% dollar for dollar on top of the 1% already paid. For employees who contribute between 3% and 5% of their paycheck, the DOD matches 50 cents on the dollar.

Therefore, a service member who contributes 3% of their paycheck can expect another 4% total contribution from the DOD 3% matching plus the standard 1%. A service member who contributes 4% of their paycheck can expect a 4.5% total contribution from the DOD, and those who contribute 5% can expect the maximum 5% total DOD contribution.
