Can I Join The Coast Guard With A Ged

Joining The Army With GED

You can join the Coast Guard with a GED. Is it as easy to join the Coast Guard with a GED as it is with a high school diploma? No, it is much more difficult to join the Coast Guard with a GED compared to a high school diploma.

As of 2015, when you apply to join the Coast Guard, your education qualifications will determine if you are a Tier 1 candidate or a Tier 2 candidate. Applicants with a high school diploma fall into the Tier 1 category as long as they are in the 31st percentile or above on their AFQT . Applicants with a GED automatically fall into the Tier 2 category and must score in the 50th percentile or above on the AFQT to qualify. Just because you qualify doesnt necessarily mean there will be an opening for you. However, if you have a GED and have earned 15 semester hours or more of college courses you can obtain the Tier 1 status. Tier 1 candidates get first pick on open positions, while Tier 2 candidates can apply for any open positions that are left.

The military is not allowed to accept more than 10 percent of individuals with a GED, and each branch of the military sets its own limit, which is generally less than that 10 percent. Military statistics have shown that people who dropped out of high school tend to drop out of the military in their first term at a higher percentage than those with a high school diploma.

Good luck to all!

The Applicant Pool Has Been Shrinking For Years

Its not just education that has kept potential recruits out of uniform. Every year, fewer and fewer potential applicants qualify for military service. Obesity, criminal records, and mental health issues cull the pool of potential warfighters. In 1973 the draft law expired in the United States, and Congress refused to extend it. Since then, weve had an all-volunteer military and rely on a constant stream of recruits each year.

In 2017, the Pentagon conducted an extensive study of Americans between the ages of 17 and 24 and found that 71% were ineligible to serve in the United States armed forces because they failed to meet minimum standards or have other disqualifiers. Unfortunately, the situation has only gotten worse since then. More than 24 million of the 34 million young people in the cohort noted above could not join the armed forces if they wanted to, which most of them do not.

Here is the problem only 29% of our young people are qualified to serve. This workforce shortage presents a real compromise to our national security. There are only so many ways to deepen the applicant pool one is to drop educational requirements.

Educational Requirements To Join The Military

If you want to join the Military with a GED, you can definitely apply and see if you get admitted. Like all potential recruits, youll need to be between the ages of 17 and 34, with no more than two dependents, and reach a minimum score of 31 to pass the Armed Services Qualification Test.

Youll also need to have a clean record and meet the Militarys physical requirements. Many potential recruits were adopted because of obesity or other disqualifying medical conditions.

Even if you meet all the other requirements, you wont be accepted with just the GED. Thats because the Military has so many people to choose from these days, and can pick the most qualified.

So your best bet if you have a GED instead of a high school diploma is to earn some college credits. Your chances of being accepted improve dramatically if you earn 15 college credits . Your chances continue to increase with an increasing number of college credits.

General Education Development and Military Service

Participating in the military is really competitive process. If you dont have a high school diploma, that will be a disadvantage for you when applying to enter any service industry. Earning a GED or General Education Development, also known as a General Equivalency Diploma, is a selection if you cant graduate from high school, but the path is no easier than a traditional high school diploma.

The military GED exam is free at authorized DANTES testing centers abroad.

What Type Of Educational Certificates Are Required To Be An Officer

In most cases, military structure means that officers are the leaders and enlisted men are subordinate. While many people each year join the military, some have the intention of doing so as an officer so that they can have a more senior position and make more money. The educational requirements to become an officer in the US Armed Forces are higher than that of enlistees, and they must go through a rigorous selection process.

There are a few different ways in which someone interested in becoming an officer in the armed forces can do so. First, they can be selected and complete training at one of the military academies within the US. Each branch of service has their own academy, and while it is free of charge for students to obtain their educational certificates from one of these schools, they must agree to serve in the military for anywhere from 4 8 years following graduation.

Many other universities and colleges around the country also offer training programs that can prepare a person for armed service. There are colleges in each state that host ROTC programs that allow students to obtain some military knowledge while they are pursuing their studies at a traditional university. Most participants in ROTC programs also receive funds to cover much of their educational certificates, but again they are required to serve for a certain length of time after graduation.

What Education Do You Need To Join The Militarywhat Kind Of Educational Certificate Is Required To Enlist

One important requirement for enlisting in the military is to be at least eighteen years of age. There are some exceptions, but generally you must have a high school diploma or equivalent to join the service. There was a time when you could join the military without a GED or high school diploma and the military would offer training during service to obtain this educational certificate, but those times have passed. Now, you need to either show proof of your high school graduation in the form of a diploma or transcript or be able to provide evidence of passing the GED exam prior to enlisting. There are many testing centers all over the US where you can complete the test for the GED as well as many training programs that you can take before the test to make sure that you are ready to pass the test. Other requirements for joining the military are that you must be a US citizen, meet height and weight as well as some legal requirements.

What Is The Asvab Test

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test, or the ASVAB test, serves as the military entrance exam and an aptitude test for military careers. It is a proctored exam that includes ten short tests for you to complete in three hours or less. Each test includes multiple-choice questions related to:

  • General science

  • Surveillance and communications

  • Skilled technical

It’s important to remember some branches require higher scores in general, and most branches have higher score requirements for people with GEDs than they do for those with high school diplomas. In addition to a higher ASVAB composite score, some branches also require higher line scores. Most branches consider the AFQT score the most important line score, especially for recruits with a GED. As some people struggle to take tests, some branches may allow recruits with low scores to get a waiver to take the place of their ASVAB score, which is something you ask your recruiter about.

Joining the Marine corps with a GED pt. 1

Joining the US Army is possible even if you dont have a high school or college diploma.

However, you will be required to meet certain qualifications to be considered eligible.

Recruits to the army are usually classified in three tiers:

Tier 1: Applicants who hold high school or college diplomas are generally categorized as tier one recruits.

Tier 2: GED holders without diplomas and high school dropouts are classified as tier 2.

Tier 3: No GED or High school diploma. This tier more or less doesnt exist anymore.

If you are a GED holder with no college or high school diploma, you can raise your rank to tier one by completing 15 college credits.

Army recruits with GED certificates must also perform in the mandatory Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test in order to enlist.

This test is meant to evaluate whether a recruit has sufficient cognitive ability to serve in the army.

It also enables the army to determine what occupations a recruit might be most suited to given their abilities.

Whereas army recruits with high school or college diplomas only need a score of 31 and above to qualify, GED army recruits are required to score 50 percent and above in order to enlist.

In addition to meeting these requirements, all GED applicants must meet all the age, citizenship, height and weight, tattoo policy, and legal requirements in order to be eligible to join the army.

In fact, the Air Force only recruits less than one percent of applicants.

What Does The Ged Involve

The GED refers to the General Education Development Test. Earning a GED provides an alternative to earning the traditional high school diploma. The GED exam includes four separate tests that you may schedule on the same day or on different days. Each test typically requires at least an hour, and each test focuses on one of the main testing subject areas, which are:

  • Science

  • Reasoning through language arts

  • Mathematical reasoning

GED tests include multiple choice, long-form and essay questions. People pursuing a GED often hire tutors, enroll in preparatory courses and/or complete practice exams for the tests. To earn your GED, you must earn at least a score of 145 out of 200 on all four of your individual tests. Scores within the 165 to 174 range or 175 to 200 range show a preparedness for college courses or may entitle you to college credit hours.

GED requirements vary by state. Most states require you to be at least 18 years old to take the exam. However, some states make exceptions, such as offering the exam to 16- and 17-year-olds who have permission from their parent or legal guardian.
