A typical sea deployment on a Navy ship can last anywhere from six to nine months. Ships typically deploy once every 18-24 months. In preparation for deployment, Sailors should be prepared to go to sea for 10 to 14 days each month for training.

Adult high school age students seeking a high school diploma

Students planning to join the US Military should be aware of specific educational guidelines that must be followed to be eligible for enlistment. Northgate Academy is an accredited, Tier 1 high school. This is the same status as traditional public high schools and qualifies graduates for enlistment.

Full and part-time students must be enrolled at Northgate Academy for a minimum of 90-days, or one full semester to meet attendance guidelines. In addition to the 90-day attendance/enrollment requirement, students can earn a 21.5 Standard High School Diploma or a 24-credit College Prep diploma to be eligible for Military enlistment.

Students that demonstrate they have the discipline and motivation to do whats expected of them when assigned, are good candidates for the Army, Navy, Marines, Airforce, and Coast Guard. The best option for students considering a career in the Military is to complete an official high school diploma program and qualify for Tier 1 enlistment.

What Is The Asvab Test

Joining The Army With a GED & My Story Before Basic Training

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test, or the ASVAB test, serves as the military entrance exam and an aptitude test for military careers. It is a proctored exam that includes ten short tests for you to complete in three hours or less. Each test includes multiple-choice questions related to:

  • General science
  • Surveillance and communications
  • Skilled technical

It’s important to remember some branches require higher scores in general, and most branches have higher score requirements for people with GEDs than they do for those with high school diplomas. In addition to a higher ASVAB composite score, some branches also require higher line scores. Most branches consider the AFQT score the most important line score, especially for recruits with a GED. As some people struggle to take tests, some branches may allow recruits with low scores to get a waiver to take the place of their ASVAB score, which is something you ask your recruiter about.

Army Ged Plus Enlistment Program

The Army used to run a special enlistment program designed for disadvantaged youths who had neither a high school diploma or a GED. This program, called the Army GED Plus Enlistment Program, had enabled applicants who didn’t possess a high school diploma or a GED to be sponsored by the Army to obtain a GED for enlistment purposes.

The GED Plus Enlistment Program was only available in certain areas with high concentrations of disadvantaged youths, and the number of enrollees was limited. Those enrolling needed to score 50 or higher on the Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery test, score 46 or higher on the Assessment of Individual Motivation test, be at least 18 years old, and be in good moral standing.

The Army enrolled GED candidates at two locations: at Fort Jackson in South Carolina for the regular Army, and at Camp Robinson in Arkansas for the Army National Guard. Those who passed the GED exam proceeded directly to enrollment.

However, the Army no longer needs this program, since it is enlisting fewer active-duty soldiers overall. The program closed in 2013.

Getting Into The Army With A Ged

Can You Join the Military With A GED? Depending On The ...

If you hold a GED and want to join the Army, you certainly can apply and see if you get in. As with all other potential recruits, you’ll need to be between the ages of 17 and 34, have no more than two dependents, and pass the Armed Services Qualification Test with a minimum score of 31.

You’ll also need to have a clean record and to meet Army physical requirements. Many potential recruits are passed by because of obesity or other disqualifying medical conditions.

However, even if you meet all the other requirements, in all likelihood you won’t be accepted with just a GED. That’s because the Army has plenty of people from which to choose these days, and can choose those with the highest qualifications.

Therefore, your best bet if you have a GED instead of a high school diploma is to earn some college credits. If you earn 15 college credits , your chances of being accepted improve dramatically. Your chances continue to rise with increasing numbers of college credits.

    Requirements For Ged Holders

There are additional requirements for GED holders that high school graduates do not need. All of the services strictly limit the number of high school dropouts who can enlist each year. It is because years of military enlistment statistics have shown that this category of enlistees fails to complete the entire first term of military service at about twice the rate of those with a high school diploma or those with college credits.

If you have a high school diploma or higher, you are categorized in Tier 1 classification, and if you have a GED without college credits, you are classified as Tier 2. However, if a student with a GED completes 15 college credits, that student is reclassified as Tier 1. The Tier 1 student has to perform in the 30th percentile and above on the ASVAB to be eligible for service. The Tier 2 student has to perform above the 50th percentile to be eligible for service.

The Air Force is the most strict on this matter. The Air Force allows less than one percent of annual enlistments to be recruits without a high school diploma. The Marines have the next highest standards. No more than five percent of Marine recruits can be GED-holders. The Army allows no more than ten percent each year, and the Navy limits GED enlistments to no more than five to ten percent each year.

How To Join The Military With No High School Diploma

Every branch of the military will accept applications from someone who doesn’t have a high school diploma. You must, however, have a GED certificate. The military only enlists a small amount of GED candidates each year based on a percentage of the total number of people enlisting. Military research has shown that high school dropouts are more likely to have behavioral issues and be discharged from the service early. While the military has a strong demand for new recruits and does recruit high school dropouts, it looks for positive signs that recruits have what it takes to gain soldier readiness and dependability.

    There Are Three Recruitment Tiers:

Tier 3 recruits are rarely accepted into the armed services.

    • Tier 3 recruits usually do not have a high school diploma or a GED. The chances for tier 3 recruits to join the military are extremely low. It is recommended that all applicants work to meet the requirements for tier 2.
    • Tier 2 recruits hold a GED and must score well on the ASVAB. Tier 2 recruits can meet requirements to join however, it is still rare for tier 2 recruits to join. For example, only 1% of air force recruits come from tier 2. Scoring 50% or above on the ASVAB will improve those chances immensely.
    • Tier 1 recruits hold a high school diploma or 15 college credits. Tier 1 recruits do not need a GED and only need a 31% or higher on the ASVAB to qualify for the armed services.

If you don’t meet the requirements for tier 1 or tier 2, that doesn’t mean you can’t join the armed services. Earning a GED is the first step, then preparing for the ASVAB or attending a community college to earn enough credits to qualify for a higher tier.

A pilot program at the Army’s Fort Jackson near Columbia, S.C., is offering high school dropouts a chance to earn their GEDs for free in exchange for their service. The Army hopes this program will keep its enlistment numbers steady as the wars overseas continue.

After dropping out of high school, William Kamicka, now 28, wanted to join the military, but his family talked him out of it. So the Columbiaville, Mich., native got a job. He eventually found work at a gift shop where he met his wife. They got married, and now they have four kids. Kamicka says having a family made it hard for him to get his GED.

“I’d eat up any overtime I could get my hands on, just to get that extra dollar, so that interfered with my GED classes,” Kamicka says. “I never really got to finish.”

Then a few months ago, as Michigan’s economy tanked, Kamicka and his wife lost their jobs. He went on unemployment and searched for a new job, but without a diploma, he couldn’t even find work at a fast-food restaurant. So he tried to join the military but officials there, too, were looking for a high school diploma.

“The Navy, Air Force and Marines wouldn’t accept me,” Kamicka recalls. “The Army had said, ‘We’ll pay for your GED you get it and then you can come join.'”
