Like the active duty troops, Reservists also get basic pay, allowances where appropriate, and special pay where appropriate. But this pay is offered only for the periods of service the Reservists show up for including training, drill weekends, and active duty service when activated.
Military pay charts for Reservists show basic pay ONLY and these charts do not reflect allowances or other payments above and beyond basic pay. Depending on your status as a Reserve member you may be eligible to earn time on active duty that can be counted toward a Post 9/11 GI Bill once the minimum active duty service time has been reached.
Reservists who are called to active duty will be paid for their active service the same as for regular Army troops or other service membersReservists called to active duty service are compensated for the time spent working on active duty and those Reservists who serve on active duty earn days toward qualifying for education benefits like the Post 9/11 GI Bill.
A Third Option: Civilian Service
You can serve in the military full time but not be on active duty through the Air Force Civilian Service, Army Civilian Service, Navy Civilian Careers, or Coast Guard Civilian Careers. For reservists, pay is based off drill dates. Drilled dates are monthly scheduled work days typically on weekends. For active duty, pay is bi-weekly. Pay days fall on the 1st and the 15th. If the pay dates fall on the weekend, then pay is pushed ahead of time to Fridays.

National Guard Pay Vs Army Reserves Pay
If you are thinking about joining the National Guard or the Reserves, you might be wondering how National Guard pay or Reserve pay works.
Serving in the National Guard and Reserves can be quite different than serving in the active duty military. You have your monthly drills, your annual training, and anything else the military calls you to do. You also work a civilian job, and the military is only a small part of your paycheck.
As an active duty soldier, you know you can receive base pay, BAH , and other types of payments and allowances.
How do things work for the National Guard and Reserves? How about if you deploy or train for more than a weekend? Will you still receive BAH if you are gone for three weeks?

Can I Receive Both Va Disability Compensation And Drill Pay
Unfortunately, you must choose between receiving VA Disability Compensation and Drill Pay. However, you only waive your VA Disability Compensation for the number of days you will be receiving Drill Pay. The typical number of days per year individuals receive Drill Pay is 63 days. Thus, you will only have to waive your VA Disability Compensation for 63 days per year. Pay grade and VA disability rates are considerations plus drill pay is taxable and VA compensation is NOT subject to taxes.
Enlisted Vs Commissioned Officers
There are two distinct career paths in the military: commissioned and enlisted officers. Commissioned officers are effectively the managers of the military, while enlisted officers serve in specific skill areas. The pay scales for each reflect their different degrees of responsibility.
Each military service has its own names for the various enlisted ranks. Most enlisted members enter the military at the lowest pay grade and climb the pay scale to higher positions with greater pay. Enlisted pay grades range from E-1 through E-9 .
To gain the pay advantages of a commissioned officer, some enter the military with a higher education degree and begin their military careers through one of the officer candidate schools. Some are high school graduates who attend a service academy or a civilian college while participating in a Reserve Officer Training Corps ROTC program.
Many enlisted officers choose to enter the military reserves, serving part time and occasionally being called to active duty.

Time In Grade Time In Service Counts
There is also an overall TIS or Time In Service which also affects your pay and certain allowances the longer you spend in uniform as an active duty service member or Reservist, the higher your pay can go.
In both cases there are federal limits on the amount of the pay raise you get upon certain career milestones such as passing the two-year mark on your initial enlistment depending on the rank and time spent serving. Stay in the military for six years and you may be entitled to a pay raise at years two and four, but depending on your Time-In-Grade you may stop getting pay raises at year six until you get promoted.
Promotions are dependent on both time in grade AND time in serviceyou cant get promoted to another rank without having spent a minimum amount of time on duty in your current military rank and youll find it important to seek guidance on how long you must serve at your current rank before being eligible for a promotion.
United States Military Pay
United States military pay is money paid to members in the United States Armed Forces. The amount of pay may vary by the member’s rank, time in the military, location duty assignment, and by some special skills the member may have.
Pay will be largely based on rank, which goes from E-1 to E-9 for enlisted members, O-1 to O-10 for commissioned officers and W-1 to W-5 for warrant officers. Commissioned officers and warrant officers will often have higher pay-grades than their enlisted counterparts. Early pay-grade promotions are quite frequent, but promotions past E-4 will be fewer.

What About Drill Pay And Weekend Drills
- Weekend drills can be anywhere from 1-4 days long, depending on what is going on, what is needed and even the budget. Usually, you can count on training on Saturday and Sunday with a possible Friday or Monday as well. They will be at your local armory or another location. If you live near a military installation, you might even go there for training.
- Each year, you can figure out how much you will get paid during your drill weekends by checking out the military pay charts here. For example, in 2018, an E-5 with 8+ years would make $104.19 for 1 drill, $416.76 for 4 drills. An O-7 with 16+ years would make $392.73 for 1 drill, $1,570.92 for 4 drills.
- You need to know that 1 drill period is 4 hours. On a typical weekend, you would work 4 drill periods. So that E-5 would earn $416.76 for a regular, two day drill weekend.
- You are not given any BAH for a drill weekend.
- You should receive your pay for your drill weekend, about 10 days after the weekend is over, give or take.
Reserve Enlisted Drill Military Pay Chart
Military pay is based on an officer’s years of service, rank, and path as an enlisted or commissioned officer. These rates are reviewed and updated each year as part of the national defense budget.
Unlike commissioned officers, who receive an ongoing base salary, reserve officers are paid based on drill exercises they complete for their ongoing training and conditioning. Let’s take a look at how this works and what the rates are as of January 1, 2021.

What Happens When I Deploy
- When you deploy, you are being activated and will receive pay as if you were on active duty. This will include pays such as BAH, Family Separation Pay, Hostile Fire/Imminent Danger Pay, Hardship Duty Pay, Hazardous Duty Pay, Foreign Language Proficiency Pay, BAS and all of your pay while deployed will be tax-exempt.
- Of course, what you receive when you deploy will depend on where you are going, how long you are there, and what you qualify for.
What About Annual Training
- AT is annual training and happens once a year, for about two or three weeks. During this time, your base pay would be the same as your active duty counterpart with the same rank and time in service. This will, of course, be prorated for the time that you are away on training.
- If youre gone for less than 30 days, you will receive what is called Basic Allowance for Housing Reserve Component/Transient, or BAH II. This is not the same as BAH, what an active duty service member would receive.
- BAH II pays less than what BAH I would pay. It is also not based on your location but instead on rank, if you have dependents or not, and on the national average for housing. The E-5 with dependents would earn $948.30, the 0-7 with dependents would earn $2050.80. This number is also prorated. If you are gone for three weeks, you will receive three weeks worth of BAH II, not the full amount.

- If you happen to be gone for more than 30 days, you would then receive BAH I. This is a change as it used to be that you had to be gone 140 days to qualify.

How Much Do The Army Reserves Pay
Army Reservists augment the ranks of active-duty soldiers and prepare to potentially serve as active duty in the case of a national emergency. Normally, members of the Army Reserves serve as part-time soldiers by training for one weekend a month and two consecutive weeks per year. During the remainder of the time, they go about regular daily life, whether it’s attending college, caring for a family or working a civilian job. For that one weekend a month, Army Reservists earn what’s known as “drill pay.”

What Is Drill Pay
Base pay for military members depends on several factors, including whether they are serving in active duty or the reserves. Active duty members receive full-time pay, while National Guard and reserve members who are not on active duty receive part-time pay, or drill pay, depending on the number of drills they perform each month.
What Is The Military Pay Raise For 2021
All military officers receive what’s called “basic pay” as part of their compensation package. This base salary is typically the main component of an officer’s pay, and it is set to increase each year based on the Employment Cost Index .
The President and Congress do have the power to override this pay increase by veto when reviewing the annual National Defense Authorization Act. The 2021 act was held up in a veto by President Trump, who argued the bill didn’t meet some of his administration’s goals for national security. However, Congress overrode Trump’s veto and the bill passed, including a 3% raise in base pay for all service members that went into effect January 1, 2021.
The base pay is the same across all service branches and is based on rank and time in service, with pay raises according to years of creditable service.

Reserve pay is two times a month. The 15th is the mid-month pay and includes pay due from the 1st through the 15th of the month. The 1st of the following month is the end of month pay and includes pay due from the 16th through the last day of the previous month.
Some Fundamentals About Military Pay
In general, active duty military pay and Reserve pay have some things in common including the fact that this income is taxable by the federal government.
Both Reserve and active duty pay is also similar in the sense that any allowances you get including housing, separate rates or the Basic Allowance for Subsistence, and the military clothing allowance are NOT federally taxable.
Both active duty troops and Reservists will see their pay increase the longer they serve. TIG or Time-In-Grade refers to the amount of time you have spent serving at your current rank. The longer you serve in your current rank the higher your pay will go up to certain limits established by the DoD and the branch of service youre in.

How Much Time Do I Need To Commit To The Army Reserve?
Local Reserve units generally meet weekly and these contribute towards the 27 days per year training requirement. Other training takes place over weekends and an annual two-week training camp.
Those with specialist skills may consider joining a national unit, for example as a cyber expert or a medical professional. Specialist units tend to have a lower annual training camp commitment of 19 days per year and may not have weekly drill nights.
What About Pay And Benefits?
Reservists get paid monthly for all training they do and like Regular soldiers, pay goes up with promotion and increment levels.
Reservists earn an annual, tax free bounty which increases with each year of service. In order to qualify personnel will need to meet time commitment targets and complete MATTs . Part of the training time will need to be in a continuous time period .
