Who Serves And How

Air Force Basic Military Training Age 30 And Up. It’s Not As Bad As You Think

The majority of Reservists serve one evening a week, one weekend a month. Many also provide essential support for longer terms within the CA Regular Force.

Reservists come from all sorts of backgrounds from young Canadians graduating in high school or entering universities or colleges, to civic-minded Canadians of all ages who have careers outside the ARes in a wide range of civilian occupations.

Simply put, training and employment within the ARes meets the needs of citizens willing to take on the Army challenge and contribute their varied skills and backgrounds that enrich and strengthen the Canadian Army.

To ensure the ARes can meet its full operational potential, the CA is increasing the size of the ARes, reducing the recruitment process to a matter of weeks, and fully integrating Reservists into the total Force with additional roles that provide full-time capability through part-time service, in accordance with the Government of Canadas new Defence Policy: Strong, Secured, Engaged.

At present, there are over 18,500 Army Reservists across Canada who look forward to a great future of personal growth, training and missions. By 2020, it is expected that the Army Reserve will grow to over 21,000.

To join the Army Reserve, start by dropping by the local armoury in your community or region. If you are looking for a particular trade, you must join a unit that offers that type of work. Each units page has a list of the trades they offer.

Ged Holders Must Score Higher On The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery

Those who do not have a high school diploma will be required to score higher on the ASVAB test, regardless of the branch of service desired.

Some potential new military members may find that the recruiter will upon learning of the GED status of an applicant wish to have the recruit take the ASVAB first. Those who do not score high enough are often encouraged to take a specified amount of college credits before retaking the ASVAB.

The reason for this is that those who have GEDs and college credits are put in the same ASVAB scoring category as someone with a high school diploma. The high school graduates do not get more stringent ASVAB scoring requirements.

Those who have dropped out of high school in the hopes of joining the military as soon as legally permitted should know that the requirement to earn a GED and/or college credits will be necessary to meet the militarys basic education standards. Anyone wishing to enlist at age 17 with parental consent should seriously consider finishing their high school program first.

Military Branches Limit How Many Can Enlist Without A High School Diploma

All branches of service restrict how many new recruits may enter military service each year without a high school diploma. According to some reports, this is due to statistics which tend to indicate a higher number of unsuccessful basic trainees come from backgrounds that do not include a diploma.

Those who want to enter the military as quickly as possible should know that they may technically qualify to serve, but their status as without a high school diploma may push their application to the following year if the quota for non-diploma holders has already been met.

If You Havent Earned Your Diploma Yet And Want To Join The Military Out Of High School

Pros And Cons To Joining The Military by Jenyca Shaw

Any recruiter will urge a potential new recruit to complete high school first before trying to enter the military. That said, military recruiting involves something known as the Delayed Enlistment program where those who are not technically eligible to serve yet due to age or school status may enter into a provisional agreement with the service they wish to join.

Delayed Enlistment may put the enlistee into a program to familiarize them with military life, procedures, what to expect in basic training, etc. It can be a big help to those who want to serve, but are not yet eligible to become full-fledged military recruits.

Requirements For Joining The Military

The U.S. military has six branches of service: the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Space Force. The requirements to join are similar for all six. The main differences are in age limits, test scores, and fitness levels. Men and women meet different fitness standards. Besides the requirements listed here, a branch may have other requirements.

Age Limits for Enlisting

You must be at least 17 to enlist in any branch of the active military. The oldest you can be to enlist for active duty in each branch is:

  • Coast Guard: 31

  • Air Force: 39

  • Space Force: 39

Some branches have different age limits for their part-time Reserve and National Guard. Visit each service’s recruiting website for its part-time age limits.

Requirements for Enlisting If You Are Not a U.S. Citizen

You do not have to be a U.S. citizen to enlist in the military, but you may have fewer options. If you are not a U.S. citizen, you must:

  • Have a permanent resident card, also known as a Green Card

  • Currently live in the U.S.

  • Speak, read, and write English fluently

Educational and Testing Requirements for Enlisting

You must take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test. The ASVAB has 10 subtests.

  • Your scores on four of those make up your Armed Forces Qualification Test score. This score determines which branch you may join. Each branch has its own lowest score for joining.

  • Your scores on all 10 subtests determine which job specialties you qualify for..

And After You Leave The Armed Forces

Soldiers are often discharged with no money to continue in the civilian world and no transferable job skills. Unemployment lines are filled with veterans who are poorly qualified and lack the useful skills for civilian employment. Many veterans remain jobless for long periods and are a large part of the homeless and prison populations. Even those who are gainfully employed will remain behind their civilian counterparts in income and advancement for the rest of their careers. Once you have been in the military, you cant catch up with the rest of the world.

The military stays with you in other ways as well. Much of the appeal is the idea of proving yourself, developing discipline, being all you can be. Perhaps you want to carry army pride with you all your life. Remember, however, that this is only part of the picture. No one can participate in violence and remain either unscarred or indifferent. You will always be part of the destruction you supported. And if the United States does fight a war, you may never be able to forget the people you killed. For some people the weight of these memories is too heavy to bear. The suicide rate among Vietnam veterans is many times the national average.

Enlisting in the military is a serious commitment. Before you join, know what is in the fine print. Learn all the details and choose whats best for you. Think about it.

Air Force Enlistment Age Raised To 3: Excellent Asvab Score Essential

Pros And Cons To Joining The Military by Jenyca Shaw

The Air Force has raised the maximum age for enlistment from 27 to 39. They have chosen to increase the age due to a need to attract a pool of qualified individuals that have computer programming or foreign language experience. They especially want more multilingual recruits.

Since the Army caps the age for enlistment at 35, the Navy and 34 and the Marines at 28, this news makes the Air Force the military branch with the highest allowed recruiting age. This is great news for United States citizens that have reached a point in their career where they are looking for a different career path, if they are multilingual or have cyber work experience.

You may be wondering what educational requirements are for enlistment in the Air Force at an older age? As of right now, the requirements remain the same as before. This means Air Force recruits must get at least 36 points on the ASVAB*. Exclusions are created, however, for a few high school graduates that score lower than 36, but higher than 31. Yet, over 70 percent of those approved for an Air Force enlistment score 50 or above.

Its almost impossible get into the Air Force without a high school diploma. Less than 1% of all annual Air Force enlistments only have a GED. If a GED holder is trying to enlist, that person must score a 65 or higher on the AFQT* portion of the ASVAB.

Overweight Unfit Or Shy The British Army Still Wants You

Borderline recruits are getting a second chance to make the grade on four-week boot camp

Overweight, unfit and shy recruits are being given a second chance to join the British army via a four-week boot camp as the military seeks new ways to increase troop numbers in its under-strength armed forces.

The soldier development course which first ran in September is designed to help borderline recruits make the grade and is one of a range of measures aimed at stemming a 10% shortfall in fully trained personnel.

Speaking as the army unveiled its latest annual recruitment campaign, Col Nick Mackenzie, the head of army recruiting, said: We are constantly looking at our publications and our policies to ensure we can get more people into the army.

About 200 would-be recruits have already attended the boot camp, and the plan is to run nine such courses a year, taking in 50 applicants at a time, at a centre in Pirbright, Surrey.

Mackenzie said the course would help those with borderline fitness, who were a bit slow on their run, or they were just a little bit too large, to meet the minimum standard required.

The army is desperately trying to bolster soldier numbers after a long period of decline. There are 73,740 trained personnel, well below the target figure of 82,000.

But that has not yet led to an increase in fully trained soldier numbers because of the time it takes to train them.
